Actual epide miological aspects of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (B.S.E.) in Europe
After the contamination of british people by the agent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and the identification of the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease nvCJD), it is important to ascertain if the number of confirmed BSE cases in United Kingdom is really in a phase of rapid decline and will reach zero at 2001. Comparison with epidemiological aspects of BSE in others european countries is also necessary to explain the etiology of the âbom after the ban on ruminant protein in cattle feedâ cases. With the crossing of the âspecies barrierâ by the bovine agent, the hypothesis of the contamination of sheep cannot be excluded
Bovine medicine teaching in France
Although the first veterinary school in the world was created in France to fight cattle diseases, bovine
medicine teaching really took on only at the end of the forties. The decrease in bovine practice and
the rising interest in small animal practice lead to a progressive change in training programmes and in
means allocated to bovine medicine teaching, with wide disparities between the national veterinary
schools. It is important today to maintain large animal practices in rural areas, as a link in the chain
which has shown its efficacy in safeguarding both animal and consumer health.
News on emerging and resurging zoonoses
Emerging and resurging zoonoses, with their sometimes dramatic medical and/or economic consequences,
are becoming an increasing problem due to the intensification of human and animal movements,
environmental changes, and the risk of bioterrorism. Veterinary surgeons play a key role in
our improving understanding of these diseases, as over 70% of human infectious diseases have an
animal reservoir.
The origin of theses zoonoses may be food, e.g. infections caused by Shiga toxin-producing
Escherichia coli or Cryptosporidium parvum, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Others
have emerged in immunocompromised patients. Some zoonoses are more frequent among people
working in animal husbandry (leptospirosis, brucellosis, avian chlamydophilosis, porcine streptococcal
infection, Nipah and Hendra virus infections, hantavirus infection). The emergence or extension
of tick-borne viral and bacterial infections (with vectors such as ticks and mosquitoes) is remarkable:
West Nile fever, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, Rift valley fever, bartonelloses, ehrlichiosisâŠ
It is important to identify the animal reservoir of these emerging zoonoses: production animals (avian
influenza due to the highly pathogenic virus of subtype H5N1, hepatitis EâŠ), pets (methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus, leishmaniasisâŠ), exotic animals (salmonellosis, tularemia, hantavirosis),
or wild animals (especially bats and rodents).
Finally, some animal diseases may potentially become zoonoses (Borna disease, paratuberculosis,
encephalomyocarditisâŠ).
A close collaboration between veterinary and human medicines is essential to update regularly the
priorities of the control programmes for these zoonosis.L'émergence et la résurgence
zoonoses

Epidemiological and clinical aspects of subacute spongiform encephalopathies in veterinary medicine
The subacute bovine spongiform encephalopathies caused by a non conventionnal transmissible agent (NCTA) are clinically characterized by sensitive and motorial nervous disorders. After a long incubation period, these disorders develop into a great physiological misery, and the issue is always fatal. In natural conditions, the mean of transmission is mainly oral (polluted food, non decontaminated animal proteins...). As a genetic factor interferes with susceptibility to NCTA, the disease could be thought here- ditarian. It is the reason why a breeder would not declare the illness in his herd, when the declaration is not compulsory

Modifications of urodynamic parameters in the scrapie ewes
Ewes (8 normal and 8 with scrapie) were submitted to an urodynamic study. Diseased ewes showed frequently contractions of the bladder known as uninhibited contractions of detrusor. They exhibited also an instability of urethra. The other values of cystomanometric analysis were not signifi cantly affected. Theses modifications of the bladder and urethra are compa red to some diseases observed in people suffering of central nervous system alterations

Is the cat a victim of light pollution?
There are more than 75 million cats in europe, a number that is constantly increasing.
It is an animal that adapts very well to a reduced space and can live alone. However, it is also a predator, a behavior that requires frequent wandering away from its familiar environment. Along with the dog, it is the most medicalized animal species and whose life expectancy is increasing. Living in close contact with man, it shares its environment, and is thus subjected to the same environmental impacts such as light pollution : reduction of darkness in time and space and its replacement by artificial light. A recent study has shown that 45% of sedentary cats are overweight or even obese. We hypothesize that among the factors favouring obesity, the extension of domestic lighting would play an important role. In human, obesity is a risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes, which is a public health problem. The same is true for obese cats. As a clinical expression of a homologous human disease, it is the animal model of type 2 diabetes so much sought after by the scientific community. Light pollution presents another risk for the wandering cat: the probability of encountering wild animals (rodents, mustelids, birds, etc.) Which, especially during the confinement period, are attracted by the space released by humans. This risk is important to consider because of the cat's sensitivity to coronaviruses, in particular sars-cov-2, which it is likely to contract from with the wild animals that it may encounter. In the context of a pandemic situation, the question of unrestricted itinerancy of cats must be addressed. Cats should only be allowed to roam freely when they are vaccinated and undergo regular anti-parasite treatments
