Question-answering, relevance feedback and summarisation : TREC-9 interactive track report
In this paper we report on the effectiveness of query-biased summaries for a question-answering task. Our summarisation system presents searchers with short summaries of documents, composed of a series of highly matching sentences extracted from the documents. These summaries are also used as evidence for a query expansion algorithm to test the use of summaries as evidence for interactive and automatic query expansion
Interquark Potential in Schrodinger Representation
Static charges are introduced in Yang-Mills theory via coupling to heavy
fermions. The states containing static color charges are constructed using
integration over gauge transformations. A functional representation for
interquark potential is obtained. This representation provides a simple

Decoherence in QED at finite temperature
We consider a wave packet of a charged particle passing through a cavity
filled with photons at temperature T and investigate its localization and
interference properties. It is shown that the wave packet becomes localized and
the interference disappears with an exponential speed after a sufficiently long

Kaon Condensation in the Bound-State Approach to the Skyrme Model
We explore kaon condensation using the bound-state approach to the Skyrme
model on a 3-sphere. The condensation occurs when the energy required to
produce a falls below the electron fermi level. This happens at the

Squeezed Gluon Condensate and Quark Confinement in the Global Color Model of QCD
We discuss how the presence of a squeezed gluon vacuum might lead to quark
confinement in the framework of the global colour model of QCD. Using reduced
phase space quantization of massive vector theory we construct a Lorentz
invariant and colourless squeezed gluon condensate and show that it induces a
permanent, nonlocal quark interaction (delta-function in 4-momentum space),
which according to Munczek and Nemirovsky might lead to quark confinement. Our
approach makes it possible to relate the strength of this effective confining
quark interaction to the strength of the physical gluon condensate.Comment: 18 pages LaTeX, to appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
Growth, Characterization, and Electrochemical Properties of Doped n-Type KTaO_3 Photoanodes
The effects of compositionally induced changes on the semiconducting properties, optical response, chemical stability, and overall performance of KTaO_3 photoanodes in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells have been investigated. Single crystals of n-type Ca- and Ba-doped KTaO_3 with carrier concentrations ranging from 0.45 to 11.5×10^(19) cm^(−3) were grown and characterized as photoanodes in basic aqueous electrolyte PEC cells. The PEC properties of the crystals, including the photocurrent, photovoltage, and flatband potential in contact with 8.5 M NaOH(aq) were relatively independent of whether Ca or Ba was used to produce the semiconducting form of KTaO_3. All of the Ca- or Ba-doped KTaO_3 single-crystal photoanodes were chemically stable in the electrolyte and, based on the open-circuit potential and the band-edge positions, were capable of unassisted photochemical H_2 and O_2 evolution from H_2O. The minority-carrier diffusion lengths values were small and comparable to the depletion region width. Photoanodic currents were only observed for photoanode illumination with light above the bandgap (i.e., λ<340 nm). The maximum external quantum yield occurred at λ=255 nm (4.85 eV), and the depletion width plus the minority-carrier diffusion length ranged from 20 to 65 nm for the various KTaO_3-based photoanode materials
Pressure of thermal excitations in superfluid helium
We find the pressure, due to the thermal excitations of superfluid helium, at
the interface with a solid. The separate contributions of phonons, rotons
and rotons are derived. The pressure due to rotons is shown to be
negative and partially compensates the positive contribution of rotons,
so the total roton pressure is positive but several times less than the
separate and roton contributions. The pressure of the quasiparticle
gas is shown to account for the fountain effect in . An experiment is
proposed to observe the negative pressure due to rotons.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
