Sabbatical Leave Proposal
The sabbatical will be built around analysis and study of the speeches and great speakers of the mid-1800\u27s in the United States, among them Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant, and Frederick Douglas. Theirs was an era of great speeches and volatile public opinion. I believe their words and presentations were as much responsible for the definition of America as those of Washington or Jefferson. Even the average soldier displayed language skills of surprising quality. These speeches, poems and correspondences effectively sold the American Civil War to the nation. They inspire my curiosity as to how and why they were so effective in motivating others. What were their argumentation styles; their cultural and philosophical roots? What events surrounded their speech making? How did speakers maximize their credibility? Can we apply today the techniques that made this period a bench mark in American public address? The speeches will be studied, re-created for students and others, and discussed with audiences interested in these topics
Interferometric data for a shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction
An experimental study of the axisymmetric shock-wave / boundary-layer strong interaction flow generated in the vicinity of a cylinder-cone intersection was conducted. The study data are useful in the documentation and understanding of compressible turbulent strong interaction flows, and are part of a more general effort to improve turbulence modeling for compressible two- and three-dimensional strong viscous/inviscid interactions. The nominal free stream Mach number was 2.85. Tunnel total pressures of 1.7 and 3.4 atm provided Reynolds number values of 18 x 10(6) and 36 x 10(6) based on model length. Three cone angles were studied giving negligible, incipient, and large scale flow separation. The initial cylinder boundary layer upstream of the interaction had a thickness of 1.0 cm. The subsonic layer of the cylinder boundary layer was quite thin, and in all cases, the shock wave penetrated a significant portion of the boundary layer. Owing to the thickness of the cylinder boundary layer, considerable structural detail was resolved for the three shock-wave / boundary-layer interaction cases considered. The primary emphasis was on the application of the holographic interferometry technique. The density field was deduced from an interferometric analysis based on the Able transform. Supporting data were obtained using a 2-D laser velocimeter, as well as mean wall pressure and oil flow measurements. The attached flow case was observed to be steady, while the separated cases exhibited shock unsteadiness. Comparisons with Navier-Stokes computations using a two-equation turbulence model are presented
Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data in a Spatially Explicit Price Model
Famine early warning organizations use data from multiple disciplines to assess food insecurity of communities and regions in less-developed parts of the World. In this paper we integrate several indicators that are available to enhance the information for preparation for and responses to food security emergencies. The assessment uses a price model based on the relationship between the suitability of the growing season and market prices for coarse grain. The model is then used to create spatially continuous maps of millet prices. The model is applied to the dry central and northern areas of West Africa, using satellite-derived vegetation indices for the entire region. By coupling the model with vegetation data estimated for one to four months into the future, maps are created of a leading indicator of potential price movements. It is anticipated that these maps can be used to enable early warning of famine and for planning appropriate responses
Transverse magnetic tweezers allowing coincident epi-fluorescence microscopy on horizontally extended DNA
Longitudinal magnetic tweezers (L-MT) have seen wide-scale adoption as the tool-of-choice for stretching and twisting a single DNA molecule. They are also used to probe topological changes in DNA as a result of protein binding and enzymatic activity. However, in the longitudinal configuration, the DNA molecule is extended perpendicular to the imaging plane. As a result, it is only possible to infer biological activity from the motion of the tethered superparamagnetic microsphere. Described here is a “transverse” magnetic tweezers (T-MT) geometry featuring simultaneous control of DNA extension and spatially coincident video-rate epi-fluorescence imaging. Unlike in L-MT, DNA tethers in T-MT are extended parallel to the imaging plane between two micron-sized spheres, and importantly protein targets on the DNA can be localised using fluorescent nanoparticles. The T-MT can manipulate a long DNA construct at molecular extensions approaching the contour length defined by B-DNA helical geometry, and the measured entropic elasticity agrees with the worm-like chain model (force < 35 pN). By incorporating a torsionally constrained DNA tether, the T-MT would allow both the relative extension and twist of the tether to be manipulated, while viewing far-red emitting fluorophore-labelled targets. This T-MT design has the potential to enable the study of DNA binding and remodelling processes under conditions of constant force and defined torsional stress
Implementing a 4-H Aquatic Resources Education Program in New York City Through Collaborations
The New York State 4-H Sportfishing and Aquatic Resources Education Program (SAREP) has enjoyed relatively high participation rates in upstate New York, but until 1998, had experienced little success in New York City. This was due to the Cornell staff\u27s inexperience in working with the Extension program in NYC, which does not use the traditional rural volunteer-led 4-H club model. Rather than create a traditional club system in NYC, it was decided to build collaborations with existing youth-serving organizations. The approach resulted in 17 different youth-serving organizations conducting SAREP programming reaching approximately 40,000 youth annually
Swift UVOT Observations of Core-Collapse SNe
We review recent UV observations of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) with the
Swift Ultra-violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) during its first two years.
Rest-frame UV photometry is useful for differentiating SN types by exploiting
the UV-optical spectral shape and more subtle UV features. This is useful for
the real-time classification of local and high-redshift SNe using only
photometry. Two remarkable SNe Ib/c were observed with UVOT -- SN2006jc was a
UV bright SN Ib. Swift observations of GRB060218/SN2006aj began shortly after
the explosion and show a UV-bright peak followed by a UV-faint SN bump. UV
observations are also useful for constraining the temperature and ionization
structure of SNe IIP. Rest-frame UV observations of all types are important for
understanding the extinction, temperature, and bolometric luminosity of SNe and
to interpret the observations of high redshift SNe observed at optical

Lightcone reference for total gravitational energy
We give an explicit expression for gravitational energy, written solely in
terms of physical spacetime geometry, which in suitable limits agrees with the
total Arnowitt-Deser-Misner and Trautman-Bondi-Sachs energies for
asymptotically flat spacetimes and with the Abbot-Deser energy for
asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Our expression is a boundary value of
the standard gravitational Hamiltonian. Moreover, although it stands alone as
such, we derive the expression by picking the zero-point of energy via a
