High energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type eigenfunctions and frame flows
We relate high-energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type operators to
frame flows on the corresponding manifolds, and show that the ergodicity of
frame flows implies quantum ergodicity in an appropriate sense for those
operators. Observables for the corresponding quantum systems are matrix-valued
pseudodifferential operators and therefore the system remains non-commutative
in the high-energy limit. We discuss to what extent the space of stationary

Optimal random search for a single hidden target
A single target is hidden at a location chosen from a predetermined
probability distribution. Then, a searcher must find a second probability
distribution from which random search points are sampled such that the target
is found in the minimum number of trials. Here it will be shown that if the
searcher must get very close to the target to find it, then the best search
distribution is proportional to the square root of the target distribution. For
a Gaussian target distribution, the optimum search distribution is
approximately a Gaussian with a standard deviation that varies inversely with
how close the searcher must be to the target to find it. For a network, where
the searcher randomly samples nodes and looks for the fixed target along edges,
the optimum is to either sample a node with probability proportional to the
square root of the out degree plus one or not at all.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Social Ranking Techniques for the Web
The proliferation of social media has the potential for changing the
structure and organization of the web. In the past, scientists have looked at
the web as a large connected component to understand how the topology of
hyperlinks correlates with the quality of information contained in the page and
they proposed techniques to rank information contained in web pages. We argue
that information from web pages and network data on social relationships can be
combined to create a personalized and socially connected web. In this paper, we
look at the web as a composition of two networks, one consisting of information
in web pages and the other of personal data shared on social media web sites.
Together, they allow us to analyze how social media tunnels the flow of
information from person to person and how to use the structure of the social
network to rank, deliver, and organize information specifically for each
individual user. We validate our social ranking concepts through a ranking
experiment conducted on web pages that users shared on Google Buzz and Twitter.Comment: 7 pages, ASONAM 201
Generating Preview Tables for Entity Graphs
Users are tapping into massive, heterogeneous entity graphs for many
applications. It is challenging to select entity graphs for a particular need,
given abundant datasets from many sources and the oftentimes scarce information
for them. We propose methods to produce preview tables for compact presentation
of important entity types and relationships in entity graphs. The preview
tables assist users in attaining a quick and rough preview of the data. They
can be shown in a limited display space for a user to browse and explore,
before she decides to spend time and resources to fetch and investigate the
complete dataset. We formulate several optimization problems that look for
previews with the highest scores according to intuitive goodness measures,
under various constraints on preview size and distance between preview tables.
The optimization problem under distance constraint is NP-hard. We design a
dynamic-programming algorithm and an Apriori-style algorithm for finding
optimal previews. Results from experiments, comparison with related work and
user studies demonstrated the scoring measures' accuracy and the discovery

Towards a relation extraction framework for cyber-security concepts
In order to assist security analysts in obtaining information pertaining to
their network, such as novel vulnerabilities, exploits, or patches, information
retrieval methods tailored to the security domain are needed. As labeled text
data is scarce and expensive, we follow developments in semi-supervised Natural
Language Processing and implement a bootstrapping algorithm for extracting
security entities and their relationships from text. The algorithm requires
little input data, specifically, a few relations or patterns (heuristics for
identifying relations), and incorporates an active learning component which
queries the user on the most important decisions to prevent drifting from the
desired relations. Preliminary testing on a small corpus shows promising

In Ivory Coast, the plantain sector is insufficiently organized. Is it due to the selfish behaviour of its agents? A field study was conducted to compare this sector with the sweet banana. The degree of altruism was measured via a repeated public good game. Agents of plantain appear more cooperative than their counterparts in sweet banana. The lack of organisation is rather due to the market conditions than to selfish behaviour. These agents are willing to coordinate their activities, but they some favourable conditions
Finding Scientific Gems with Google
We apply the Google PageRank algorithm to assess the relative importance of
all publications in the Physical Review family of journals from 1893--2003.
While the Google number and the number of citations for each publication are
positively correlated, outliers from this linear relation identify some

The chameleon groups of Richard J. Thompson: automorphisms and dynamics
The automorphism groups of several of Thompson's countable groups of
piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line and circle are computed and it is
shown that the outer automorphism groups of these groups are relatively small.
These results can be interpreted as stability results for certain structures of
PL functions on the circle. Machinery is developed to relate the structures on
the circle to corresponding structures on the line
Proximity Full-Text Search with a Response Time Guarantee by Means of Additional Indexes
Full-text search engines are important tools for information retrieval. Term
proximity is an important factor in relevance score measurement. In a proximity
full-text search, we assume that a relevant document contains query terms near
each other, especially if the query terms are frequently occurring words. A
methodology for high-performance full-text query execution is discussed. We
build additional indexes to achieve better efficiency. For a word that occurs
in the text, we include in the indexes some information about nearby words.
What types of additional indexes do we use? How do we use them? These questions
are discussed in this work. We present the results of experiments showing that
the average time of search query execution is 44-45 times less than that
required when using ordinary inverted indexes.
