Embedded Star Formation in the Eagle Nebula with Spitzer/GLIMPSE

We present new Spitzer photometry of the Eagle Nebula (M16, containing the optical cluster NGC 6611) combined with near-infrared photometry from 2MASS. We use dust radiative transfer models, mid-infrared and near-infrared color-color analysis, and mid-infrared spectral indices to analyze point source spectral energy distributions, select candidate young stellar objects (YSOs), and constrain their mass and evolutionary state. Comparison of the different protostellar selection methods shows that mid-infrared methods are consistent, but as has been known for some time, near-infrared-only analysis misses some young objects. We reveal more than 400 protostellar candidates, including one massive young stellar object (YSO) that has not been previously highlighted. The YSO distribution supports a picture of distributed low-level star formation, with no strong evidence of triggered star formation in the ``pillars''. We confirm the youth of NGC 6611 by a large fraction of infrared-excess sources, and reveal a younger cluster of YSOs in the nearby molecular cloud. Analysis of the YSO clustering properties shows a possible imprint of the molecular cloud's Jeans length. Multiwavelength mid-IR imaging thus allows us to analyze the protostellar population, to measure the dust temperature and column density, and to relate these in a consistent picture of star formation in M16.Comment: 16p preprint - ApJ accepte

The Current State of Knowledge of Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Based on Its Study in Experimental Models

The present review focuses on the numerous experimental models used to study the complexity of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Although experimental models of hepatic I/R injury represent a compromise between the clinical reality and experimental simplification, the clinical transfer of experimental results is problematic because of anatomical and physiological differences and the inevitable simplification of experimental work. In this review, the strengths and limitations of the various models of hepatic I/R are discussed. Several strategies to protect the liver from I/R injury have been developed in animal models and, some of these, might find their way into clinical practice. We also attempt to highlight the fact that the mechanisms responsible for hepatic I/R injury depend on the experimental model used, and therefore the therapeutic strategies also differ according to the model used. Thus, the choice of model must therefore be adapted to the clinical question being answered

Níveis e frequências de irrigação na limeira 'Tahiti' no Estado do Piauí.

Trabalhos de manejo de irrigação no Brasil com a limeira ácida ?Tahiti? são escassos, especialmente no Estado do Piauí. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a produção e os componentes de produção da limeira ácida ?Tahiti? em resposta à aplicação de cinco lâminas (68, 80, 100, 124 e 136% da evapotranspiração da cultura ? ETc) e duas frequências de irrigação (um e dois dias). O experimento foi realizado em um pomar comercial, com espaçamento de 6 x 5 m e irrigado por microaspersão, localizado em José de Freitas, PI. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, e esquema de parcelas subdivididas (frequências ? parcelas e lâminas ? subparcelas). O manejo diário da irrigação foi realizado pelo balanço de água no solo, com o auxílio do programa computacional Irriplus. O manejo de irrigação com turno de rega diário e reposição de 100% da ETc foi o mais indicado, por proporcionar maiores níveis de produtividade (2.709 kg ha-1), peso médio dos frutos (105,2 g) e máxima EUA (299 g m-3)

G328.4+0.2 : A large and luminous Crab-like supernova remnant

We report on radio continuum and HI observations of the radio source G328.4+0.2 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our results confirm G328.4+0.2 to be a filled-center nebula with no surrounding shell, showing significant linear polarization and an almost flat spectral index. These results lead us to conclude that G328.4+0.2 is a Crab-like, or ``plerionic'', supernova remnant (SNR), presumably powered by an unseen central pulsar. HI absorption towards G328.4+0.2 puts a lower limit on its distance of 17.4 +/- 0.9 kpc, making it the largest (D=25 pc) and most luminous (L_R = 3e35 erg/s) Crab-like SNR in the Galaxy. We infer G328.4+0.2 to be significantly older than the Crab Nebula, but powered by a pulsar which is fast spinning (P<20 ms) and which has a comparatively low magnetic field (B<1e12 G). We propose G328.4+0.2, G74.9+1.2 and N157B as a distinct group of large-diameter, high-luminosity Crab-like SNRs, all powered by fast-spinning low-field pulsars.Comment: 7 pages, 3 embedded EPS figures, uses emulateapj.sty.
