    Mathematical models in physiology

    Computational modelling of biological processes and systems has witnessed a remarkable development in recent years. The search-term (modelling OR modeling) yields over 58000 entries in PubMed, with more than 34000 since the year 2000: thus, almost two-thirds of papers appeared in the last 5–6 years, compared to only about one-third in the preceding 5–6 decades.\ud \ud The development is fuelled both by the continuously improving tools and techniques available for bio-mathematical modelling and by the increasing demand in quantitative assessment of element inter-relations in complex biological systems. This has given rise to a worldwide public domain effort to build a computational framework that provides a comprehensive theoretical representation of integrated biological function—the Physiome.\ud \ud The current and next issues of this journal are devoted to a small sub-set of this initiative and address biocomputation and modelling in physiology, illustrating the breadth and depth of experimental data-based model development in biological research from sub-cellular events to whole organ simulations

    Georges Bank : a leaky incubator of Alexandrium fundyense blooms

The definitive version was published in Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography 103 (2014): 163-173, doi:10.1016/j.dsr2.2012.11.002.A series of oceanographic surveys on Georges Bank document variability of populations of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium fundyense on time scales ranging from synoptic to seasonal to interannual. Blooms of A. fundyense on Georges Bank can reach concentrations on the order of 104 cells l-1, and are generally bank-wide in extent. Georges Bank populations of A. fundyense appear to be quasi-independent of those in the adjacent coastal Gulf of Maine, insofar as they occupy a hydrographic niche that is colder and saltier than their coastal counterparts. In contrast to coastal populations that rely on abundant resting cysts for bloom initiation, very few cysts are present in the sediments on Georges Bank. Bloom dynamics must therefore be largely controlled by the balance between growth and mortality processes, which are at present largely unknown for this population.     Pharmacokinetics of alcuronium in elderly patients undergoing total hip replacement or aortic reconstructive surgery

    The pharmacokinetic behaviour of alcuronium was studied in three patients undergoing resection of an aortic aneurysm, and in another two patients undergoing total hip replacement (group I). A control group of five elderly patients undergoing relatively minor surgery was included (group II). In group I patients, the values of the pharmacokinetic parameters such as plasma clearance, elimination half-life and the apparent volume of distribution of the drug were found to be comparable to those obtained in normal young patients in previous studies. The group II patients, however, were found to have a prolonged elimination half-life as a result of reduced plasma clearance, possibly an age-related effect. The differences between those two groups of patients may be explained by the differences in the extent of haemorrhage and fluid replacement or changes in blood circulation, or both. However, alcuronium must still be used cautiously in both groups of patients, especially in the light of a recent finding that patients undergoing aortic reconstructive surgery have a high frequency of functional renal failure after operation
