An axisymmetric time-domain spectral-element method for full-wave simulations: Application to ocean acoustics
The numerical simulation of acoustic waves in complex 3D media is a key topic
in many branches of science, from exploration geophysics to non-destructive
testing and medical imaging. With the drastic increase in computing
capabilities this field has dramatically grown in the last twenty years.
However many 3D computations, especially at high frequency and/or long range,
are still far beyond current reach and force researchers to resort to
approximations, for example by working in 2D (plane strain) or by using a
paraxial approximation. This article presents and validates a numerical
technique based on an axisymmetric formulation of a spectral finite-element
method in the time domain for heterogeneous fluid-solid media. Taking advantage
of axisymmetry enables the study of relevant 3D configurations at a very
moderate computational cost. The axisymmetric spectral-element formulation is
first introduced, and validation tests are then performed. A typical
application of interest in ocean acoustics showing upslope propagation above a
dipping viscoelastic ocean bottom is then presented. The method correctly
models backscattered waves and explains the transmission losses discrepancies
pointed out in Jensen et al. (2007). Finally, a realistic application to a

HOXB7: a key factor for tumo-associated angiogenic switch.
We had demonstrated previously a functional bridge between altered homebox (HOX) gene expression and tumor progression through HOXB7 transactivation of basic fibroblast growth factor. Here, we have studied whether HOXB7, in addition to basic fibroblast growth factor, may induce other genes directly or indirectly related to neoangiogenesis and tumor invasion. Parental, beta-galactosidase-transduced, and HOXB7-transduced SkBr3 cell lines were examined for the expression of several growth factors and growth factor receptors involved in the proliferative and angiogenic processes. Vascular endothelial growth factor, melanoma growth-stimulatory activity/growth-related oncogenene alpha, interleukin-8, and angiopoietin-2 were up-regulated by HOXB7 transduction. The exception was angiopoietin-1 expression that was abrogated. Additional analyses included the expression levels of enzymes such as matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 and heparanase, capable of proteolytic degradation of extracellular matrix and basement membranes. Results showed an induction of only MMP-9. The functional implication of such a finding was tested using an in vitro coculture assay in a three-dimensional matrix. A delay of differentiation with persistent nests of proliferating cells was found in endothelial cells cocultured with HOXB7-transduced SkBr3 cells. Tumorigenicity of these cells has been evaluated in vivo. Xenograft into athymic nude mice showed that SkBr3/HOXB7 cells developed tumors in mice, either irradiated or not, whereas parental SkBr3 cells did not show any tumor take unless mice were sublethally irradiated. Comparison of tumor nodules for vascularization by CD-31 and CD-34 immunostaining revealed an increased number of blood vessels in tumors expressing HOXB7. Together, the results indicate HOXB7 as a key factor up-regulating a variety of proangiogenic stimuli. Thus, HOXB7 gene or protein is a target to aim at to inhibit tumor-associated neoangiogenesis, considering the number and the redundancy of proangiogenic molecules that should be targeted one by one to theoretically achieve the same effect
Narratives of ethnic identity among practitioners in community settings in the northeast of England
The increasing ethnic diversity of the UK has been mirrored by growing public awareness of multicultural issues, alongside developments in academic and government thinking. This paper explores the contested meanings around ethnic identity/ies in community settings, drawing on semi-structured interviews with staff from Childrenâs Centres and allied agencies conducted for a research project that examined the relationship between identity and the participation of parents/carers in services in northeast England. The research found that respondents were unclear about, especially, white ethnic identities, and commonly referred to other social categorizations, such as age, nationality, and circumstances such as mobility, when discussing service users. While in some cases this may have reflected legitimate attempts to resist overethnicizing non-ethnic phenomena, such constructions coexisted with assumptions about ethnic difference and how it might translate into service needs. These findings raise important considerations for policy and practice
Environmental assessment of the behavior of a BOF steel slag used in road construction : the PRECODD-ECLAIR research program
International audienceSteel production generate great amounts of by-products as steel slags. The use of Basic Oxygen Furnace slags (BOF slags) has been restrained due to insufficient volume stability, and due to the lack of environmental regulations. The purpose of the PRECODD-ECLAIR research program is to develop a behavior model based on a multi-scale physico-chemical, mechanical, hydrodynamic and ecotoxicological characterizations of a BOF slag used in a public works scenario. This paper aims at presenting the overall ECLAIR research program, the equipped experimental platform constructed using a BOF steel slag, and the first results of the slag characterization

Observations from an instrument array moored over the continental
shelf off Oregon from 31 July to 21 September 1969 are presented. Temperature,
current and wind observations were obtained every 20 minutes.
First order statistics, histograms, progressive vector diagrams and time
series plots are presented. Supplementary wind observations at Newport
are also described. It is recommended that wind observations be part of a
future coastal current observational program and that thermographs be
placed in positions with a large temperature gradient
The abrogation of the HOXB7/PBX2 complex induces apoptosis in melanoma through the miR-221&222-c-FOS pathway.
Cutaneous melanoma is the fastest increasing cancer worldwide. Although several molecular abnormalities have been associated with melanoma progression, the underlying mechanisms are still largely unknown and few targeted therapies are under evaluation. Here we show that the HOXB7/PBX2 dimer acts as a positive transcriptional regulator of the oncogenic microRNA-221 and -222. In addition, demonstrating c-FOS as a direct target of miR-221&222, we identify a HOXB7/PBX2âmiR-221&222 âc-FOS regulatory link, whereby the abrogation of functional HOXB7/PBX2 dimers leads to reduced miR-221&222 transcription and elevated c-FOS expression with consequent cell death. Taking advantage of the treatment with the peptide HXR9, an antagonist of HOX/PBX dimerization, we recognize miR-221&222 as effectors of its action, in turn confirming the HXR9 efficacy in the treatment of human melanoma malignancy, whilst sparing normal human melanocytes. Our findings, besides suggesting the potential therapeutic of HXR9 or its derivatives in malignant melanoma, suggest the disruption of the HOXB7/PBX2 complexes, miR-221&222 inhibition or even better their combination, as innovative therapeutic approaches

A compilation of observations from moored current meters. Vol. 13. Currents, temperature and pressure southeast of New Zealand, April 1978-May 1980
Observations were made southeast of New Zealand from April 1978 to May 1980 with the objectives of investigating the dynamics of low-frequency motions and their effects on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current; and the formation of subantarctic mode water on Campbell Plateau. Self-recording instruments were deployed during a 7-month period from April to November 1978, and during an 18-month period from November 1978 to May 1980. The 7-month array consisted of 15 Aanderaa current meters and 5 Aanderaa thermistor chains. The 18-month array consisted of 3 Aanderaa current meters. Measurements from these instruments are summarized in this report through statistical tables, progressive vector diagrams, real time plots, rotary and standard spectra, and stick figures
