Twinning-related enhancement in strength and ductility of Cu-37Zn alloy by the cryogenic ultrasonic impact treatment supplemented with ECAP

    No full text
The effects of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) and UIT with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), on the microstructure of Cu37Zn alloy are studied at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. With decreasing process temperature, highly twinned areas of submicro/nano-scale thickness/spacing, together with dislocation tangles/cells, are introduced in the alloy. Direct microscopy observation and stored energy release analysis confirm enhanced twinnings in the cryo-UIT and cryo-UIT/ECAP treated alloy that simultaneously provide superior Vickers hardness and formability (twinning-induced plasticity effect)
