Readiness to use physical activity as a smoking cessation aid: a multiple behaviour change application of the Transtheoretical Model among quitters attending Stop Smoking Clinics

    Get PDF
Objective: Physical activity (PA) reduces cigarette cravings during smoking abstinence. However, little is known about quitters’ use of PA. This study aimed to: (1) determine the extent of quitters’ past and current use of PA as a cessation aid, while attempting to quit; (2) examine the relationship between use of PA and quitter characteristics and cognitions, within the Transtheoretical Model framework. Methods: Self-report surveys were completed by 181 smokers attending Stop Smoking Services in England and Scotland. Results: Twenty-two percent of quitters reported currently using PA to control their smoking, and 35% had used it during a previous quit attempt. Those in a more advanced stage of readiness for using PA as a cessation aid, held more positive beliefs regarding self-efficacy and outcome efficacy. Conclusion: Quitters were more likely to use PA to help them quit when they had greater belief in their own ability to use PA and in the efficacy of PA to help them to quit, and were also meeting weekly PA targets for health. Practice implications: Strategies by stop smoking advisors that aim to enhance client self-efficacy and outcome efficacy beliefs regarding PA as a cessation aid may help to increase the use of this behavioural strategy, since it seems that most quitters do not use PA

N-acetyl cysteine in the treatment of obsessive compulsive and related disorders: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are a collection of debilitating psychiatric disorders in which the role of glutamate dysfunction in the underpinning neurobiology is becoming well established. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a glutamate modulator with promising therapeutic effect. This paper presents a systematic review of clinical trials and case reports exploring the use of NAC for these disorders. A further objective was to detail the methodology of current clinical trials being conducted in the area

Targeted muscle reinnervation for the management of pain in the setting of major limb amputation

    Get PDF
The life altering nature of major limb amputations may be further complicated by neuroma formation in up to 60% of the estimated 2 million major limb amputees in the United States. This can be a source of pain and functional limitation of the residual limb. Pain associated with neuromas may limit prosthetic limb use, require reoperation, lead to opioid dependence, and dramatically reduce quality of life. A number of management options have been described including excision alone, excision with repair, excision with transposition, and targeted muscle reinnervation. Targeted muscle reinnervation has been shown to reduce phantom limb and neuroma pain for patients with upper and lower extremity amputations. It may be performed at the time of initial amputation to prevent pain development or secondarily for the treatment of established pain. Encouraging outcomes have been reported, and targeted muscle reinnervation is emerging as a leading surgical technique for pain prevention in patients undergoing major limb amputations and pain management in patients with pre-existing amputations

Development of Single-station Early Warning Lightning Alarm System

Lightning is one of the spectacular natural phenomena which happen on the earth. More than 2000 people are killed worldwide by lightning each year. The lightning monitoring system is important as the early warning alarm system. In this paper, lightning warning alarm system which can monitor and observe the lightning activity has been discussed. The system able to trigger the warning alarm whenever a lightning strikes at a particular area in 10 km radius from UMP Pekan, Pahang, Malaysia. The LabVIEW software was used as a data logger to measure, analyze and calculate the lightning distance. The accuracy of the system has been compared and validated by the Pekan Lightning Detection System (PLDS)

The Metallicity and Dust Content of HVC 287.5+22.5+240: Evidence for a Magellanic Clouds Origin

We estimate the abundances of S and Fe in the high velocity cloud HVC 287.5+22.5+240, which has a velocity of +240 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest and is in the Galactic direction l~287, b~23. The measurements are based on UV absorption lines of these elements in the Hubble Space Telescope spectrum of NGC 3783, a background Seyfert galaxy, as well as new H I 21-cm interferometric data taken with the Australia Telescope. We find S/H=0.25+/-0.07 and Fe/H=0.033+/-0.006 solar, with S/Fe=7.6+/-2.2 times the solar ratio. The S/H value provides an accurate measure of the chemical enrichment level in the HVC, while the super-solar S/Fe ratio clearly indicates the presence of dust, which depletes the gas-phase abundance of Fe. The metallicity and depletion information obtained here, coupled with the velocity and the position of the HVC in the sky, strongly suggest that the HVC originated from the Magellanic Clouds. It is likely (though not necessary) that the same process(es) that generated the Magellanic Stream is also responsible for HVC 287.5+22.5+240.Comment: AASTEX, 3 postscript figures, AJ, 1998, Jan issu

A novel implementation of vibration signal decomposition for estimation of degradation in rotating plant

    Get PDF
Effective and transparent monitoring of rotating plant assets is essential to the continued reliable operation of power stations. Rotating plant monitoring generally includes analysis of vibration signals, where operations and maintenance engineers use the output from vibration sensors to justify the continued operation of the plant or plan for maintenance interventions where necessary. One common approach to such vibration monitoring is the adoption of alarm driven strategies where certain operational or mechanical interventions are performed when thresholds are triggered due to deviations from a predefined operational envelope. This reactive intervention approach, however, does not provide operators or equipment manufacturers with any insight into the long-term degradation of a rotating plant item, which could be used to mitigate unplanned stoppages. This paper proposes the novel implementation of Empirical Mode Decomposition to boiler feed pump vibration signals, alongside subsequent statistical analysis of the decomposed signals to estimate time-frames associated with alarm violations and entry into predefined zones of operation. Such a technique provides pump operators with information that can be used to plan for future maintenance interventions and pump manufactures with insight into the likely degradation of their product during sustained operation
