Modelling the Interconnected Synchronous Generators and its State Estimations
© 2018 IEEE. In contrast to the traditional centralized power system state estimation approaches, this paper investigates the optimal filtering problem for distributed dynamic systems. Particularly, the interconnected synchronous generators are modeled as a state-space linear equation where sensors are deployed to obtain measurements. As the synchronous generator states are unknown, the estimation is required to know the operating conditions of large-scale power networks. Availability of the system states gives the designer an accurate picture of power networks to avoid blackouts. Basically, the proposed algorithm is based on the minimization of the mean squared estimation error, and the optimal gain is determined by exchanging information with their neighboring estimators. Afterward, the convergence of the developed algorithm is proved so that it can be applied to real-time applications in modern smart grids. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the developed algorithm

On-chip stimulated Brillouin scattering and its applications
We review recent demonstration of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a chalcogenide photonic chip and its application to optical and microwave signal processing tasks. The interaction between light and sound via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) was exploited in chalcogenide photonic circuits to achieve on-chip SBS slow and fast light, microwave photonic filters, and dynamic gratings using travelling-wave geometry. Using a ring-resonator geometry, photonic-chip based Brillouin laser was demonstrated. © 2013 SPIE
Direct Evidence for Dominant Bond-directional Interactions in a Honeycomb Lattice Iridate Na2IrO3
Heisenberg interactions are ubiquitous in magnetic materials and have been
prevailing in modeling and designing quantum magnets. Bond-directional
interactions offer a novel alternative to Heisenberg exchange and provide the
building blocks of the Kitaev model, which has a quantum spin liquid (QSL) as
its exact ground state. Honeycomb iridates, A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li), offer potential
realizations of the Kitaev model, and their reported magnetic behaviors may be
interpreted within the Kitaev framework. However, the extent of their relevance
to the Kitaev model remains unclear, as evidence for bond-directional
interactions remains indirect or conjectural. Here, we present direct evidence
for dominant bond-directional interactions in antiferromagnetic Na2IrO3 and
show that they lead to strong magnetic frustration. Diffuse magnetic x-ray
scattering reveals broken spin-rotational symmetry even above Neel temperature,
with the three spin components exhibiting nano-scale correlations along
distinct crystallographic directions. This spin-space and real-space
entanglement directly manifests the bond-directional interactions, provides the
missing link to Kitaev physics in honeycomb iridates, and establishes a new
design strategy toward frustrated magnetism.Comment: Nature Physics, accepted (2015
Adherence to physical activity guidelines in older adults, using objectively measured physical activity in a population-based study.
BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) levels in older adults decline with age. The prevalence and correlates of adherence to current UK PA guidelines in older adults has not been studied using objectively measured PA, which can examine precisely whether PA is carried out in bouts of specified length and intensity.
METHODS: Free living men and women aged 70-93 years from 25 towns in the United Kingdom, participating in parallel on-going population based cohort studies were invited (by post) to wear a GT3x accelerometer over the hip for one week in 2010-12. Adherence to UK PA guidelines was defined as ≥150 minutes/week of moderate or vigorous PA (MVPA) in bouts of ≥10 minutes; the effect of different intensities and durations were examined.
RESULTS: 1593 men and 857 women participated (responses 51% and 29% respectively). 15% men and 10% women achieved ≥150 minutes/week of MVPA (defined as >1040 cpm) in bouts lasting ≥10 minutes. With MVPA defined as >1952 cpm, prevalences were 7% and 3% respectively. Those adhering to guidelines were younger, had fewer chronic health conditions, less depression, less severe mobility limitations, but higher exercise self-efficacy and exercise outcomes expectations. They rated their local environment more highly for social activities and leisure facilities, having somewhere nice to go for a walk and feeling safe after dark, They left the house on more days per week, were more likely to use active transport (cycle or walk) and to walk a dog regularly.
CONCLUSIONS: Few older adults attain current PA guidelines. Health promotion to extend the duration of moderate-intensity activity episodes to 10 minutes or more could yield important health gains among older adults. However future studies will need to clarify whether attaining guideline amounts of PA in spells lasting 10 minutes or more is critical for reducing chronic disease risks as well as improving cardiometabolic risk factors
Design of a pulse power supply unit for micro-ECM
Electrochemical micro-machining (μECM) requires a particular pulse power supply unit (PSU) to be developed in order to achieve desired machining performance. This paper summarises the development of a pulse PSU meeting the requirements of μECM. The pulse power supply provides tens of nanosecond pulse duration, positive and negative bias voltages and a polarity switching functionality. It fulfils the needs for tool preparation with reversed pulsed ECM on the machine. Moreover, the PSU is equipped with an ultrafast overcurrent protection which prevents the tool electrode from being damaged in case of short circuits. The developed pulse PSU was used to fabricate micro-tools out of 170 μm WC-Co alloy shafts via micro-electrochemical turning and drill deep holes via μECM in a disk made of 18NiCr6. The electrolyte used for both processes was a mixture of sulphuric acid and NaNO3 aqueous solutions. The research reported in this paper is supported by the European Commission within the project “Minimizing Defects in Micro-Manufacturing Applications (MIDEMMA)” (FP7-2011-NMP-ICT-FoF-285614
Modeling and simulation of nanofluid transport via elastic sheets
The field of nanofluidics research has spanned over the past decade with a variety of promising applications. We investigate the ``laminar boundary layer flow’’ of a Newtonian nanofluid past a moving extendable/contractable horizontal plate with surface velocity and thermal slip effects. The passively controlled nanofluid model (PCM) is considered. Such models are physically more realistic as compared to the “actively controlled models” (ACM). Using Lie symmetry group method, the governing equations are reduced by a set of highly coupled nonlinear ODE’s with thermo-solutal coupled boundary conditions. The reduced equations are solved numerically by a generalized collocation method. The influences of the emerging parameters on the local skin friction factor and the local Nusselt number are depicted numerically. The skin friction is decreased as the thermo-phoresis and buoyancy ratio parameters are decreased. The heat transfer rates reduce with thermophoresis and buoyancy ratio parameters. Velocity slip also leads to a rise in wall temperature gradient. This study is relevant to near-wall flows in nanofluid fuel cells, nano-materials processing et
In-vivo high resolution imaging of optic nerve head drusen using spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract

Background

Optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) are white calcareous deposits, seen either superficially on the optic nerve head or buried within it. Diagnosis of ONHD is made by one or more ways: clinical exam, autofluorescence, ultrasound of the optic nerve, CT scan and/or visual field examination. The present study describes features of ONHD based on another diagnostic modality, the spectral-domain OCT (Spectralis).

Methods

This is a retrospective case series of 5 patients with bilateral ONHD with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 and no other posterior segment pathology. All the patients underwent fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, B-scan ultrasonography, Spectralis OCT and Humphrey 30-2 threshold visual fields.

Results

All 5 patients had surface ONHD which were autofluorescent and echodense on B-scan ultrasonography. Spectralis OCT findings in the corresponding areas include 'scattered spots with high reflectivity' casting a shadow underneath. The reflectivity can be distinctly differentiated from the blood vessels on the optic nerve. Two patients had an arcuate scotoma on the Humphrey visual fields. No correlation was found between the changes on Spectralis OCT with that of visual field.

Conclusions

Spectralis OCT is another useful ancillary investigation in the diagnosis of ONHD and we describe the features in the present study.</p
