A mathematical formalism for the Kondo effect in WZW branes
In this paper, we show how to adapt our rigorous mathematical formalism for
closed/open conformal field theory so that it captures the known physical
theory of branes in the WZW model. This includes a mathematically precise
approach to the Kondo effect, which is an example of evolution of one
conformally invariant boundary condition into another through boundary
conditions which can break conformal invariance, and a proposed mathematical
statement of the Kondo effect conjecture. We also review some of the known
physical results on WZW boundary conditions from a mathematical perspective.Comment: Added explanations of the settings and main result

Beam dynamics and expected RHIC performance with 56MHz RF upgrade
An upgrade of the RHIC storage RF system with a superconducting 56 MHz cavity was recently proposed. This upgrade will provide a significant increase in the acceptance of the RHIC 197 MHz storage RF bucket. This paper summarizes simulations of beam evolution due to intra-beam scattering (IBS) for beam parameters expected with the 56 MHz SRF cavity upgrade. Expected luminosity improvements are shown for Au ions at 100 GeV/nucleon and protons at 250 GeV

Behavioral reconsolidation interference with episodic memory within-subjects is elusive.
In studies of behavioral reconsolidation interference, reactivation of a consolidated memory using some form of reminder is followed by the presentation of new information that can cause interference with that memory. Under these conditions, the interference not only impairs retrieval by indirect processes such as cue interference, but supposedly disrupts the original memory trace directly. Almost all studies of behavioral reconsolidation interference in episodic memory in humans have employed between-subjects paradigms, and deduced reminder effects from intrusion errors. Such studies might introduce confounds arising, for example, from differences in retrieval strategies engendered by the pre-test treatments. We therefore set out to examine whether behavioral reconsolidation interference in episodic memory might be demonstrated within-subjects and by direct memory strength rather than intrusion errors. In three separate experiments, we attempted to disrupt reconsolidation of episodic object-picture memory using a reminder + retroactive interference manipulation. We applied the manipulation over three consecutive days, using a forced-choice recognition test without intrusions from interfering learning, keeping all other study and test parameters constant. No effects of reminder-potentiated interference were observed for measures of accuracy, response times, subjective expressions of recollection, or levels of confidence, as substantiated by Bayesian analyses. These results highlight the difficulty of observing clear behavioral reconsolidation interference effects within-subjects in human episodic memory, and provide some indications of what might be boundary conditions for its demonstration
Review of Linac-Ring Type Collider Proposals
There are three possibly types of particle colliders schemes: familiar (well
known) ring-ring colliders, less familiar however sufficiently advanced linear
colliders and less familiar and less advanced linac-ring type colliders. The
aim of this paper is two-fold: to present possibly complete list of papers on
linac-ring type collider proposals and to emphasize the role of linac-ring type
machines for future HEP research.Comment: quality of figures is improved, some misprints are correcte
A Weil-Barsotti formula for Drinfeld modules
We study the group of extensions in the category of Drinfeld modules and
Anderson's t-modules, and we show in certain cases that this group can itself
be given the structure of a t-module. Our main result is a Drinfeld module
analogue of the Weil-Barsotti formula for abelian varieties. Extensions of
general t-modules are also considered, in particular extensions of tensor
powers of the Carlitz module. We motivate these results from various directions
and compare to the situation of elliptic curves.Comment: 20 pages, latex file. To appear in Journal of Number Theor

High-Energy Electron Cooling Based on Realistic Six-Dimensional Distribution of Electrons
The high-energy electron cooling system for RHIC-II is unique compared to standard coolers. It requires bunched electron beam. Electron bunches are produced by an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL), and cooling is planned without longitudinal magnetic field. To address unique features of the RHIC cooler, a generalized treatment of cooling force was introduced in BETACOOE code which allows us to calculate friction force for an arbitrary distribution of electrons. Simulations for RHIC cooler based on electron distribution from ERL are presented
Beam-Breakup Instability Theory for Energy Recovery Linacs
Here we will derive the general theory of the beam-breakup instability in
recirculating linear accelerators, in which the bunches do not have to be at
the same RF phase during each recirculation turn. This is important for the
description of energy recovery linacs (ERLs) where bunches are recirculated at
a decelerating phase of the RF wave and for other recirculator arrangements
where different RF phases are of an advantage. Furthermore it can be used for
the analysis of phase errors of recirculated bunches. It is shown how the
threshold current for a given linac can be computed and a remarkable agreement
with tracking data is demonstrated. The general formulas are then analyzed for
several analytically solvable cases, which show: (a) Why different higher order
modes (HOM) in one cavity do not couple so that the most dangerous modes can be
considered individually. (b) How different HOM frequencies have to be in order
to consider them separately. (c) That no optics can cause the HOMs of two
cavities to cancel. (d) How an optics can avoid the addition of the
instabilities of two cavities. (e) How a HOM in a multiple-turn recirculator
interferes with itself. Furthermore, a simple method to compute the orbit
deviations produced by cavity misalignments has also been introduced. It is
shown that the BBU instability always occurs before the orbit excursion becomes
very large.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
