    Martensite Nucleation at Grain Boundaries Containing Intrinsic Grain Boundary Dislocations

    It is shown that grain boundaries containing intrinsic grain boundary dislocations act as preferential nucleation site for the martensitic transformation. The microstructure and crystallography of BCC alpha'-martensite formed in a sensitized AISI 304 stainless steel was studied in detail by means of convergent beam Kikuchi pattern analysis. The orientation relationship between martensite and austenite was determined to be Kurdjumov-Sachs type. The presence of intrinsic grain boundary dislocations was observed at a grain boundary 10.83 degrees from the exact Sigma 11 CSL boundary orientation, where a martensite nucleus formed by the faulting and extension of intrinsic grain boundary dislocations. The selection of the crystallographic variant for the martensite nucleus was not related to a reduction in interfacial energy at nucleation, nor was it related to the accommodation of transformation strain by easy slip in the austenite.X1155Ysciescopu

    During the conventional die-quenching processing of a galvanized PHS steel, a thick ZnO layer is formed at the surface. When the heating rate is increased, the oxide at the surface is a thin Al2O3 layer. This remarkable change in surface oxide during rapid heating is due to the partial melting of the coating instead of the solidification of the coating and the formation of Fe-Zn intermetallics.     Influence of Intra-granular Ferrite on the Tensile Behavior of Intercritically Annealed 12 pct Mn TWIP plus TRIP Steel

    The influence of intra-granular ferrite islands, fully embedded in austenite matrix grains, on the tensile behavior of intercritically annealed Fe-12 pct Mn-0.3 pctC-3 pctAl TWIP+TRIP steel was investigated. The presence of intra-granular ferrite, which nucleated at twin boundaries during annealing, resulted in an increased yield strength by the Orowan dislocation looping mechanism and the generation of geometrically necessary dislocations at the ferrite particle/austenite matrix interface. The intra-granular ferrite also induced the formation of secondary twin variants. The resulting twin-twin intersections nucleated additional alpha'-martensite, thereby leading to an enhanced TRIP effect.     Development of a Press-Hardened Steel Suitable for Thin Slab Direct Rolling Processing

    The thin slab casting and direct rolling process is a hot-rolled strip production method which has maintained commercial quality steel grades as a major material in many industrial applications due to its low processing cost. Few innovative products have however been developed specifically for production by thin slab direct rolling. Press hardening or hot press forming steel grades which are now widely used to produce structural automotive steel parts requiring ultra-high strength and formability may however offer an opportunity for thin slab direct rolling-specific ultra-high strength products. In this work, a newly designed press hardening steel grade developed specifically for thin slab direct rolling processing is presented. The press hardening steel has a high nitrogen content compared with press hardening steel grades produced by conventional steelmaking routes. Boron and titanium which are key alloying additions in conventional press hardening steel such as the 22MnB5 press hardening steel grade are not utilized. Cr is added in the press hardening steel to obtain the required hardenability. The properties of the new thin slab direct rolling-specific 22MnCrN5 press hardening steel grade are reviewed. The evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties with increasing amounts of Cr additions from 0.6 to 1.4 wt pct and the effect of the cooling rate during die-quenching were studied by means of laboratory simulations.     The intercritically annealed Fe-0.15 pctC-6.0 pctMn-1.5 pctSi-3.0 pctAl and Fe-0.30 pctC-6.0 pctMn-1.5 pctSi-3.0 pctAl medium Mn steels were found to have improved mechanical properties due to the TWIP and TRIP plasticity-enhancing mechanisms being activated in succession during tensile deformation. The increase of the C content from 0.15 to 0.30 pct resulted in ultra-high strength properties and a strength-ductility balance of approximately 65,000 MPa-pct, i.e., equivalent to the strength-ductility balance of high Mn TWIP steel with a fully austenitic microstructure.open112223sciescopu

    What are Employers Looking for in New Veterinary Graduates? A Content Analysis of UK Veterinary Job Advertisements

    As veterinary educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that our graduates are prepared for working life. Veterinary practices, like any other businesses, rely on good employees, and the implications of a poor match between newly employed veterinarian and employing practice could be extremely costly in terms of personal well-being and enjoyment of work as well as the time, financial, and goodwill costs of high staff turnover for the practice. Contemporary veterinary curricula encompass a range of teaching to complement the clinical content; including communication, teamwork, problem solving, and business skills, to support good practice and increase the employability of new graduates. Previous studies have examined the qualities required of early career veterinarians as viewed by educators, recent graduates, pet owners, and practitioners; however, nobody has previously constructed a picture of the employment market for new veterinary graduates by exploring the nature of its recruitment advertising. Three months of UK veterinary job advertisements were examined. Content analysis yielded 10 distinct characteristics desired by employers of early career veterinarians. The most common by far was “enthusiasm,” followed by an interest in a particular area of practice, being an “all-rounder” (i.e., having a broad range of skills), demonstrating good communication skills, teamwork, client care, and independence, as well as being caring, ambitious, and having high clinical standards. While several of these qualities are expected and are specifically taught in veterinary school, the dominance of “enthusiasm” as a specifically desired trait raises interesting questions about the characteristics of veterinary students who we are supporting, encouraging, or maybe even suppressing, during veterinary training

    The surface and sub-surface structure of continuously annealed sheet steel: Implications for galvanizing and galvannealing

    The gas atmosphere in continuous annealing and galvanizing lines alters both composition and micro-structure of the surface and sub-surface of sheet steel. The formation and the morphology of the surface oxides of alloying elements in High-strength Interstitial-free, Dual Phase and Transformation-Induced Plasticity steels is strongly influenced by the furnace dew point, and the presence of specific film-forming oxides may result in surface defects and bare areas on galvanized sheet products. The present contribution reviews the progress made recently in understanding the selective formation of surface and subsurface oxides during annealing in hot dip galvanizing and conventional continuous annealing lines. The mechanisms involved reveal the fact that the surface and subsurface composition and microstructure influence galvanized sheet product surface quality.X116sciescopu
