Migrants' voter turnout in the home country elections: non‐integration or political anchor?

    Get PDF
The transnational political participation of migrants has been extensively analyzed in the literature. Previous explanations focus on individual determinants ranging from political interest or efficacy to social ties or socio-demographic characteristics. So far, little attention has been paid to the contrast between factors related to their lives in two different countries. The present article adds to this burgeoning literature by identifying and comparing the effects of several attitudes and behaviors of migrants in the host and home country on their voter turnout in home country elections. We use individual-level data from a survey conducted in 2022 on 1,058 Romanian migrants living around the world. The results indicate that migrants who remain anchored in the politics of their home country—without necessarily striving to return—and those who are engaged in their host communities are more likely to vote. Migrant voter turnout is not determined by poor integration in the host society

Pickling cucumbers are highly important both for fresh consumption and for canning industry. This study aimed to compare differences in yield and quality of eight pickling cucumber cultivars, including ‘Cor 12004’, ‘IGG 2010’, ‘IGG 2020’, ‘SM 5322’, ‘SM 5323’, ‘Zayin 201’, ‘Zayin 175201’ and ‘Trilogy’. The cucumber cultivars were laid out in a high tunnel crop and evaluated for vegetative traits (i.e. vine length, nodes per vine and branches per vine), yield attributes (i.e. fruits per main stem, average weight of fruit and fruits weight per plant) and fruits quality components (nitrate, phosphate and potassium mg kg-1). The results showed significant differences (P<0.05) in vegetative traits and yield attributes among cultivars. The analysis of correlation coefficients revealed that total yield (kg ha-1) was positively correlated with two out of three vegetative traits (with exception nodes per plant) and with all yield attributes. The highest total yield (101.17 t ha-1) was reached by ‘SM 5322’ cultivar, followed by the ‘IGG 2010’ and ‘SM 5323’ cultivars. The nitrates content in fruits, assessed on three categories of length (6-9 cm, 9-12 cm and >12 cm), revealed a declining value with increase in the cucumber length. The study findings suggest that irrespective of the cultivar, the amount of nitrate was higher in shorter cucumbers (6-9 cm length) although allrecorded values (between 192.7 and 364.3 mg kg-1 fresh matter) being under maximum accepted limit concentrations. The amount of phosphate was higher in medium to long cucumbers, while the amount of potassium was higher in shorter cucumbers

This article aims to provide an introduction to an electoral sociology of regional specificity, because it covers only the Banat region; this article does not aim to extend its findings over other geographical areas, even if some of its findings could be applied on a larger scale. In the last 25 years of democratic regime, the region of Banat consisted of a somehow different electoral behavior compared to other regions, even though the general evolution of political orientation is consistent with the same general tendency in the Romanian society. The subject of this study is to analyze the electoral behavior of this region’s population in the 2014 Presidential election, using at times an interdisciplinary approach based on electoral geography, cultural history, social statistics and political science

Both disinformation and propaganda are basic means of manipulation in the Russian society, thus contributing to the electoral decision-making process, as well as to the consolidation of the „orchestrated democracy“.In the case of such regimes, both information dissemination technologies and social networks do not embody the citizens’ right to be informed correctly; they rather turn into the state’s right to lie. This paper analyzes the electoral process and the voter manipulation techniques used in the pre-electoral stage of the presidential elections in the Russian Federation that took place on March 18th, 2018, together with the main ways to campaign through which Vladimir Putin managed to win a landslide victory

This paper analyses the factors that have shaped the Armenian identity over time, based on the main historical events and strategic actors who made their contribution to the becoming of the Armenian people and their identity. The central issue of the article is the Armenian genocide which had a major influence on the way that Armenians see themselves and the world around them, today. The study revealed that not only the genocide that happened almost a century ago, had a major impact on the Armenian identity, but also the current recognition or denial of facts by the contemporary world. In this respect, the role of the Diaspora proved priceless, because they were the ones that pressured their host countries to recognize the genocide and to support Armenia. The topic is presented form a phenomenological perspective, trying to capture the human experience in the way it was perceived by the Armenian people
