The standardization of the asylum system demonstrated a gap in providing specific assistance to asylum seekers with specific vulnerabilities as required in the Art. 17 of the 2013/33/EU Directive. The aim of this proposal is to describe the results of the research "Provide", founded by the EU (Rights, Equality and Citizenship Program 2014-2020), conducted in the last two years . The reasearch, based on mixed methods, highlights a problem of legislative discomfort between the EU and the different States; a gap in the assistance of migrants with specific needs; a problem of lack of understanding of phenomenon of proximity violence. In France, it is highlighted a lack of porosity between the Common Law and the asylum Law, especially regarding the granting of protection to vulnerable categories. Similarly, in Spain, violence suffered by migrants after leaving the origin country is not considered as a motive for International and national protection. In Italy there was a disparity in approaches in the assistance of migrants with specific needs. In the different regions and municipalities of three Countries involved there is no formalized coordinated system between asylum law and common law, between the asylum seekers’ reception system and the system of protection of victims of violence. Furthemore, asylum reforms currently underway risk of increasing the vulnerabilities related to the perpetuation of proximity violence among migrants. This is due to some of the measures envisaged by legislative reforms relating to asylum, including those concerning shorter waiting times for asylum applications and longer periods of administrative detention. The effect could be to make the victims of proximity violence even more invisible. Few are the practices of resistance in local contexts

Introduction. A nagging thought of a scholar

This paper is – as introduction of volume “Proximity violence in migration times” – is the result of the nagging thought of a scholar and the support the European Commission decided to provide her with in order to favour the theoretical challenge the project envisaged and allowing her to conduct these two years of research supported by a network of partners comprising universities, research centres and non-profit organisations. It is the product of a combined, reasoned in-the-field research and desk analysis regarding recognition and reception of refugee-asylum seekers, victims of violence within their places of origin, during the journey to the European states bordering on the Mediterranean and, above all, in Italy, the destination of many asylum seekers arriving from the African continent

“Sick woman” or “half woman”? Breast and cervical cancer, emotional script and representations of female body in a mediterranean area of Italy

The proposal aims to highlight the semiotic elements of the discourse that refer to the symbolic ones of representations, and that transform the therapy in an exercise of professional dominion aimed to modify the perception of the self of the female patient through the subversion of specific emotional script. The mapping of the emotional scripts of shame and modesty, in their performative evolution, will be useful to demonstrate how and through what relational strategies the medicalization performs a gender violence which leads to exclude and self-stigmatise the sick woman, considered a “half woman”. The reflection that has its incipit in the ascertainment that the female body has been and keeps being a means of “male dominion” and object of “symbolic violence” as well as physical, and favors unexpected articulations related to a female body affected by breast or uterus cancer with often devastating effects on the woman’s self-perception. This proposal provides a reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 Italian and stranger women. The research aims at discussing the role of medical therapy as a social practice of male domination that imposes a traditional representation in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus that creates, breast that feeds). The focus of research is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib

The hypotesis formulated in this paper concerns the possibility that the intra-generational violence has taken the place of inter-generational conflict among young and adults. In other words, the violence is not a mode of interpersonal behavior but the substrate, the basis on which has been articulated a complex set of interdependencies and cross-actions and reactions between peers. It therefore follows a pattern of deviant cohesion, which allows us to state that: 1 the violence erupts without conflict or excluding any possibility of conflict and of subsequent mediation and negotiation among the actors are involved in the relation indeed; 2. the violence has become the only glue between guys who voluntary assume the role of perpetrators, victim, bystander, when any other possible communications strategies, conducted for the mutual recognition of their identity, are failed

The Provide Training Course. Contents, Methodology, Evaluation

    Get PDF
This volume describes the ideational effort required to design and implement a training-course model for "Experts in proximity violence”. Proximity violence concerns multiple forms of gender-based violence which conceal, in turn, more subtle, intimate and viscous forms of dependence. The course was based on modules and availed itself of a "mixed" methodology, where theoretical lectures were interwoven with experiential workshops. During the first six months of 2019, over 800 Italian, French and Spanish operators engaged on the migratory front, attended the courses. The model presented in the first two chapters of the present volume was accompanied and corroborated by a set of ex-ante and ex-post questionnaires. The first set, illustrated in chapter three, aimed at pin-pointing the training needs of the operators and stakeholders to whom it was administered and who then attended the course. The ex-post questionnaires, presented in chapter four, regarded an appraisal of the course provided by those who had participated in and completed the course, and confirmed the positive achievement of the goal established by the Provide Project (Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020): that of defining a structured curriculum capable of addressing the problem of proximity and gender violence by providing adequate training, appropriate tools and skills to be used by professionals to identify, prevent and treat the phenomenon
