    Simulating `Complex' Problems with Quantum Monte Carlo

    We present a new quantum Monte Carlo algorithm suitable for generically complex problems, such as systems coupled to external magnetic fields or anyons in two spatial dimensions. We find that the choice of gauge plays a nontrivial role, and can be used to reduce statistical noise in the simulation. Furthermore, it is found that noise can be greatly reduced by approximate cancellations between the phases of the (gauge dependent) statistical flux and the external magnetic flux.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages. 3 postscript files for figures attache

    Distinguishing Among Strong Decay Models

    Two competing models for strong hadronic decays, the 3P0^3P_0 and 3S1^3S_1 models, are currently in use. Attempts to rule out one or the other have been hindered by a poor understanding of final state interactions and by ambiguities in the treatment of relativistic effects. In this article we study meson decays in both models, focussing on certain amplitude ratios for which the relativistic uncertainties largely cancel out (notably the S/DS/D ratios in b1πωb_1\rightarrow\pi\omega and a1πρa_1\rightarrow\pi\rho), and using a Quark Born Formalism to estimate the final state interactions. We find that the 3P0^3P_0 model is strongly favoured. In addition, we predict a P/FP/F amplitude ratio of 1.6±.21.6\pm .2 for the decay π2πρ\pi_2\rightarrow\pi\rho. We also study the parameter-dependence of some individual amplitudes (as opposed to amplitude ratios), in an attempt to identify a ``best'' version of the 3P0^3P_0 model.Comment: 20 pages, uuencoded postscript file with 7 figures, MIT-CTP-2295; CMU-HEP94-1

    Specific Heat of the 2D Hubbard Model

    Quantum Monte Carlo results for the specific heat c of the two dimensional Hubbard model are presented. At half-filling it was observed that cT2c \sim T^2 at very low temperatures. Two distinct features were also identified: a low temperature peak related to the spin degrees of freedom and a higher temperature broad peak related to the charge degrees of freedom. Away from half-filling the spin induced feature slowly disappears as a function of hole doping while the charge feature moves to lower temperature.     Perturbation Theory for Spin Ladders Using Angular-Momentum Coupled Bases

    We compute bulk properties of Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladders using Rayleigh-Schr\"odinger perturbation theory in the rung and plaquette bases. We formulate a method to extract high-order perturbative coefficients in the bulk limit from solutions for relatively small finite clusters. For example, a perturbative calculation for an isotropic 2×122\times 12 ladder yields an eleventh-order estimate of the ground-state energy per site that is within 0.02% of the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) value. Moreover, the method also enables a reliable estimate of the radius of convergence of the perturbative expansion. We find that for the rung basis the radius of convergence is λc0.8\lambda_c\simeq 0.8, with λ\lambda defining the ratio between the coupling along the chain relative to the coupling across the chain. In contrast, for the plaquette basis we estimate a radius of convergence of λc1.25\lambda_c\simeq 1.25. Thus, we conclude that the plaquette basis offers the only currently available perturbative approach which can provide a reliable treatment of the physically interesting case of isotropic (λ=1)(\lambda=1) spin ladders. We illustrate our methods by computing perturbative coefficients for the ground-state energy per site, the gap, and the one-magnon dispersion relation.Comment: 22 pages. 9 figure

    Probing Yukawian Gravitational Potential by Numerical Simulations. II. Elliptical Galaxies

    Since the Newtonian gravitation is largely used to model with success the structures of the universe, such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies, for example, a way to probe and constrain alternative theories, in the weak field limit, is to apply them to model the structures of the universe. We then modified the well known Gadget-2 code to probe alternative theories of gravitation through galactic dynamics. In particular, we modified the Gadget-2 code to probe alternatives theories whose weak field limits have a Yukawa-like gravitational potential. As a first application of this modified Gadget-2 code we simulate the evolution of elliptical galaxies. These simulations show that galactic dynamics can be used to constrain the parameters associated with alternative theories of gravitation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures - To appear in General Relativity and Gravitatio

    The Effect of a Mycotoxin Deactivation Product on Growth of Juvenile Rainbow Trout Fed Distillers Dried Grains

    Distillers dried grains (DDG) with solubles (DDGS) is a product that has shown potential as a protein source for some fish species, but high inclusion rates of DDGS have not always been successfully achieved for Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Our objective was to determine whether inclusion of a mycotoxin deactivation product (Biofix Plus) could improve the ability of high-protein DDG (HPDDG) to replace a portion of the fish meal in diets for Rainbow Trout. The 2 × 2 factorial feeding trial examined protein source (menhaden fish meal [MFM] or HPDDG) with or without Biofix Plus. A control diet (42% digestible protein, 20% crude lipid, 25% MFM) was compared to a test diet in which HPDDG replaced 12% of the total MFM on a digestible-protein basis (24% HPDDG inclusion). Diets were fed to juvenile Rainbow Trout (initial weight: mean ± SE = 30.5 ± 1.6 g) in four replicate tanks per treatment for 9 weeks in a 15°C recirculating system. At the conclusion of the feeding trial, we observed no negative effects of fish meal replacement on growth or feed conversion ratio; no benefit of Biofix Plus supplementation was observed. These data indicate that when Rainbow Trout diets containing a high-quality DDGS product are balanced for digestible protein, lysine, methionine, and threonine, dietary fish meal levels can be successfully reduced to 13% without compromising growth and without the need for mycotoxin deactivator inclusion

    Plasma polymerization of (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl in a collisional, capacitively coupled radio frequency discharge

    Plasma polymerization of (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) yields thin films containing stable nitroxide radicals that have properties analogous to that of nitric oxide (NO) without short lifetimes. This property gives TEMPO films a wide variety of potential applications. Typically, control of the final film chemistry is difficult and the plasma discharge conditions must be tailored to in order to maximize the retention of these nitroxide groups during the polymerization and deposition process. In this study, plasma diagnostics and surface analysis of the deposited films were carried out to determine the optimal plasma conditions for the retention of nitroxide groups. These techniques included energy-resolved mass spectrometry, heated planar probe ion current measurements, deposition rate measurements, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results show that operating the plasma with a combination of low input powers and high pressures produces a collisional discharge in which fragmentation of the TEMPO molecule is suppressed, leading to good retention of nitroxide groups. Ion energy distribution functions and quartz crystal microbalance measurements support the soft landing theory of ion deposition on the substrate within this γ-mode, in which the flux of low energy, soft landed ions form the primary contribution to film growth. XPS analysis of deposited polymers shows 75.7% retention of N - O groups in the polymer films deposited in a 25 Pa 5 W discharge. © 2020 Author(s)

    Ewald methods for polarizable surfaces with application to hydroxylation and hydrogen bonding on the (012) and (001) surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3

    We present a clear and rigorous derivation of the Ewald-like method for calculation of the electrostatic energy of the systems infinitely periodic in two-dimensions and of finite size in the third dimension (slabs) which is significantly faster than existing methods. Molecular dynamics simulations using the transferable/polarizable model by Rustad et al. were applied to study the surface relaxation of the nonhydroxylated, hydroxylated, and solvated surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite). We find that our nonhydroxylated structures and energies are in good agreement with previous LDA calculations on alpha-alumina by Manassidis et al. [Surf. Sci. Lett. 285, L517, 1993]. Using the results of molecular dynamics simulations of solvated interfaces, we define end-member hydroxylated-hydrated states for the surfaces which are used in energy minimization calculations. We find that hydration has a small effect on the surface structure, but that hydroxylation has a significant effect. Our calculations, both for gas-phase and solution-phase adsorption, predict a greater amount of hydroxylation for the (012) surface than for the (001) surface.
