The cross-flow air classifier is a dry process device. The use of such separators is being evaluated to replace the wet classification methods in the production of manufactured sand. The influence of the solid feed rate is critical for the correct design of the process. One method to analize the influence of the feed is by using numerical simulation. In this work, the powder classification process is simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The particle-particle interaction is modeled with a discrete element method (DEM). Simulations are optimized to better represent the experimental data by choosing between two turbulence models and two models for the injection of solids. Dust classification at three different solid rates is simulated. It is established that the amount of solids has a great influence in the classification process. This fact indicates that the solids content is a critical parameter for a proper design of the device.Peer Reviewe

An electrochemical study of the corrosion processes of Ni-based glassy metals in aqueous solutions

    Get PDF
The electrochemical behavior of amorphous Ni-Co alloys in carbonate/bicarbonate solutions was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined with voltammetry and stationary polarization techniques. The results indicate that the kinetics of the dissolution processes are dependent on the pH and ionic strength of the electrolyte. The composition of the glassy metal is an important factor in determining the kinetic parameters involved in the complex electrochemical behavior of these materials

A citação dos autores está incorreto. The initial slow growth and short stature of carrot can allow that weeds settle in crop areas, requiring the management of these plants for productivity not to decrease. Nevertheless, weeds control has been difficult because there are few herbicides available for weeds control in postemergence of carrots. Two experiments in the field were carried out to evaluate selectivity of metribuzin applied in postemergence of carrots. A experimental randomized block design was utilized with four repetitions. Treatments consisted of metribuzin doses (0, 144, 288, 432, 576, 720, 960 and 1,200 g ha-1), applied in postemergence of carrots of the Nantes variety. Roots productivity was evaluated and percentage of commercial roots and no-commercial roots was calculated. Metribuzin has not caused visual symptoms of intoxication in carrots. Doses lower than 432 g ha-1 of metribuzin do not reduce the total productivity of roots, independent of the application period. Any doses of metribuzin changed the percentage of commercial and noncommercial roots. It is concluded that metribuzin is selective for carrots of the Nantes variety in postemergence applications at doses of 432 g ha-1.O lento crescimento inicial da cenoura favorece o estabelecimento de plantas daninhas nas áreas de cultivo, sendo necessário o manejo dessas plantas para que não ocorra redução da produtividade.

We consider the effects of noncommutativity and the generalized uncertainty principle on the FRW cosmology with a scalar field. We show that, the cosmological constant problem and removability of initial curvature singularity find natural solutions in this scenarios.Comment: 8 pages, to appear in IJT

Braneworld models with a non-minimally coupled phantom bulk field: a simple way to obtain the -1-crossing at late times

We investigate general braneworld models, with a non-minimally coupled phantom bulk field and arbitrary brane and bulk matter contents. We show that the effective dark energy of the brane-universe acquires a dynamical nature, as a result of the non-minimal coupling which provides a mechanism for an indirect "bulk-brane interaction" through gravity. For late-time cosmological evolution and without resorting to special ansatzes or to specific areas of the parameter space, we show that the -1-crossing of its equation-of-state parameter is general and can be easily achieved. As an example we provide a simple, but sufficiently general, approximate analytical solution, that presents the crossing behavior.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

(Non)commutative isotropization in Bianchi I with Barotropic perfect fluid and Λ\Lambda Cosmological

We present the classical solutions to the Einstein field equations derived using the WKB-like and Hamilton procedures. The investigation is carried out in the commutative and noncommutative scenario for the Bianchi type I cosmological model coupled to barotropic perfect fluid and λ\lambda Cosmological for two different gauges. Noncommutativity is achieved by modifying the symplectic structure considering that all minisuperspace variables qi\rm q^i does not commute and by a deformation between all the minisuperspace variables. In the gauge N=1, it is possible to obtain that the anisotropic parameter β±nc\rm \beta_{\pm nc} tend to a constant curvature for large period of time considering different values in the noncommutative parameters θ\theta and cosmological term. However, this behavior give the idea that is necessary introduce other class of matter in the models, for to have a real isotropization in the model, such as dark energy or dark matter.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

Thick brane in 7D and 8D spacetimes

We consider a thick brane model supported by two interacting scalar fields in 7D and 8D general relativity. Using the special type of a potential energy, we obtain numerically the regular asymptotically flat vacuum solutions. A possibility of obtaining the similar solutions for an arbitrary number of the extra spatial dimensions is estimated.Comment: 3 Ref's are adde

Which mechanism underlies the water-like anomalies in core-softened potentials?

Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the thermodynamic of particles interacting with a continuous and a discrete versions of a core-softened (CS) intermolecular potential composed by a repulsive shoulder. Dynamic and structural properties are also analyzed by the simulations. We show that in the continuous version of the CS potential the density at constant pressure has a maximum for a certain temperature. Similarly the diffusion constant, DD, at a constant temperature has a maximum at a density ρmax\rho_{\mathrm{max}} and a minimum at a density ρmin<ρmax\rho_{\mathrm{min}}<\rho_{\mathrm{max}}, and structural properties are also anomalous. For the discrete CS potential none of these anomalies are observed. The absence of anomalies in the discrete case and its presence in the continuous CS potential are discussed in the framework of the excess entropy.Comment: 8 page

On the Meaning of the String-Inspired Noncommutativity and its Implications

    Get PDF
We propose an alternative interpretation for the meaning of noncommutativity of the string-inspired field theories and quantum mechanics. Arguments are presented to show that the noncommutativity generated in the stringy context should be assumed to be only between the particle coordinate observables, and not of the spacetime coordinates. Some implications of this fact for noncomutative field theories and quantum mechanics are discussed. In particular, a consistent interpretation is given for the wavefunction in quantum mechanics. An analysis of the noncommutative theories in the Schr\"odinger formulation is performed employing a generalized quantum Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. A formal structure for noncommutative quantum mechanics, richer than the one of noncommutative quantum field theory, comes out. Conditions for the classical and commutative limits of these theories have also been determined and applied in some examples.Comment: References, comments, and footnotes are included; some changes in section

Uma variante do gene WNK4 está associada à osteoporose mas não à hipertensão na população portuguesa

Germline mutations in the WNK4 gene originate Gordon syndrome or pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a familial form of hypertension with hyperkalemia and hypercalciuria. The WNK4 protein encodes a protein kinase involved in the regulation of various renal ion channels. In order to elucidate the contribution of WNK4 genetic variants to hypertension and/or osteoporosis, we analyzed 271 control individuals and a cohort of 448 hypertensive and 372 osteoporosis patients from the Portuguese population. Ten genetic variants were detected in 4.3% of the population under study, none of which revealed any significant association to the hypertension phenotype. In contrast, a rare missense alteration in a highly conserved arginine residue in exon 17 showed an association to the osteoporosis group. Our data suggest that WNK4 polymorphism rs56116165 is a rare allelic variant of a candidate gene with a biological function in renal calcium homeostasis and thus may contribute to a genetic predisposition to osteoporosis.FC
