Electronic properties of germanane field-effect transistors
A new two dimensional (2D) material—germanane—has been synthesised recently with promising electrical and optical properties. In this paper we report the first realisation of germanane field-effect transistors fabricated from multilayer single crystal flakes. Our germanane devices show transport in both electron and hole doped regimes with on/off current ratio of up to 10e5(10e4) and carrier mobilities of 150 cm2 (Vs)−1(70 cm2 (Vs)−1) at 77 K (room temperature). A significant enhancement of the device conductivity under illumination with 650 nm red laser is observed. Our results reveal ambipolar transport properties of germanane with great potential for (opto)electronics applications
Assessing recovery from acidification of European surface waters in the year 2010: Evaluation of projections made with the MAGIC Model in 1995
In 1999 we used the MAGIC (Model of Acidification of Groundwater In Catchments) model to project acidification of acid-sensitive European surface waters in the year 2010, given implementation of the Gothenburg Protocol to the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP). A total of 202 sites in 10 regions in Europe were studied. These forecasts can now be compared with measurements for the year 2010, to give a "ground truth" evaluation of the model. The prerequisite for this test is that the actual sulfur and nitrogen deposition decreased from 1995 to 2010 by the same amount as that used to drive the model forecasts; this was largely the case for sulfur, but less so for nitrogen, and the simulated surface water [NO3-] reflected this difference. For most of the sites, predicted surface water recovery from acidification for the year 2010 is very close to the actual recovery observed from measured data, as recovery is predominantly driven by reductions in sulfur deposition. Overall these results show that MAGIC successfully predicts future water chemistry given known changes in acid deposition
Narrative Exposure Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder associated with repeated interpersonal trauma in patients with Severe Mental Illness: a mixed methods design
Background: In the Netherlands, most patients with severe mental illness (SMI) receive flexible assertive community treatment (FACT) provided by multidisciplinary community mental health teams. SMI patients with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are sometimes offered evidence-based trauma-focused treatment like eye movement desensitization reprocessing or prolonged exposure. There is a large amount of evidence for the effectiveness of narrative exposure therapy (NET) within various vulnerable patient groups with repeated interpersonal trauma. Some FACT-teams provide NET for patients with comorbid PTSD, which is promising, but has not been specifically studied in SMI patients.
Objectives: The primary aim is to evaluate NET in SMI patients with comorbid PTSD associated with repeated interpersonal trauma to get insight into whether (1) PTSD and dissociative symptoms changes and (2) changes occur in the present SMI symptoms, care needs, quality of life, global functioning, and care consumption. The second aim is to gain insight into patients’ experiences with NET and to identify influencing factors on treatment results.
Methods: This study will have a mixed methods convergent design consisting of quantitative repeated measures and qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews based on Grounded Theory. The study population will include adult SMI outpatients (n=25) with comorbid PTSD and receiving NET. The quantitative study parameters will be existence and severity of PTSD, dissociative, and SMI symptoms; care needs; quality of life; global functioning; and care consumption. In a longitudinal analysis, outcomes will be analyzed using mixed models to estimate the difference in means between baseline and repeated measurements. The qualitative study parameters will be experiences with NET and perceived factors for success or failure. Integration of quantitative and qualitative results will be focused on interpreting how qualitative results enhance the understanding of quantitative outcomes.
Discussion: The results of this study will provide more insight into influencing factors for clinical changes in this population
Using role-play to improve students’ confidence and perceptions of communication in a simulated volcanic crisis
Traditional teaching of volcanic science typically emphasises scientific
principles and tends to omit the key roles, responsibilities, protocols, and
communication needs that accompany volcanic crises. This chapter
provides a foundation in instructional communication, education, and risk
and crisis communication research that identifies the need for authentic
challenges in higher education to challenge learners and provide
opportunities to practice crisis communication in real-time. We present
an authentic, immersive role-play called the Volcanic Hazards Simulation
that is an example of a teaching resource designed to match professional
competencies. The role-play engages students in volcanic crisis concepts
while simultaneously improving their confidence and perceptions of
communicating science. During the role-play, students assume authentic
roles and responsibilities of professionals and communicate through
interdisciplinary team discussions, media releases, and press conferences.
We characterised and measured the students’ confidence and perceptions
of volcanic crisis communication using a mixed methods research design
to determine if the role-play was effective at improving these qualities.
Results showed that there was a statistically significant improvement in
both communication confidence and perceptions of science communication.
The exercise was most effective in transforming low-confidence and
low-perception students, with some negative changes measured for our
higher-learners. Additionally, students reported a comprehensive and
diverse set of best practices but focussed primarily on the mechanics of
science communication delivery. This curriculum is a successful example
of how to improve students’ communication confidence and perceptions

Effects of sleep deprivation on neural functioning: an integrative review
Sleep deprivation has a broad variety of effects on human performance and neural functioning that manifest themselves at different levels of description. On a macroscopic level, sleep deprivation mainly affects executive functions, especially in novel tasks. Macroscopic and mesoscopic effects of sleep deprivation on brain activity include reduced cortical responsiveness to incoming stimuli, reflecting reduced attention. On a microscopic level, sleep deprivation is associated with increased levels of adenosine, a neuromodulator that has a general inhibitory effect on neural activity. The inhibition of cholinergic nuclei appears particularly relevant, as the associated decrease in cortical acetylcholine seems to cause effects of sleep deprivation on macroscopic brain activity. In general, however, the relationships between the neural effects of sleep deprivation across observation scales are poorly understood and uncovering these relationships should be a primary target in future research
