Nonabelian gauge field and dual description of fuzzy sphere
In matrix models, higher dimensional D-branes are obtained by imposing a
noncommutative relation to coordinates of lower dimensional D-branes. On the
other hand, a dual description of this noncommutative space is provided by
higher dimensional D-branes with gauge fields. Fuzzy spheres can appear as a
configuration of lower dimensional D-branes in a constant R-R field strength
background. In this paper, we consider a dual description of higher dimensional
fuzzy spheres by introducing nonabelian gauge fields on higher dimensional
spherical D-branes. By using the Born-Infeld action, we show that a fuzzy
-sphere and spherical D-branes with a nonabelian gauge field whose
Chern character is nontrivial are the same objects when is large. We
discuss a relationship between the noncommutative geometry and nonabelian gauge
fields. Nonabelian gauge fields are represented by noncommutative matrices
including the coordinate dependence. A similarity to the quantum Hall system is
also studied.Comment: 28 page
Easing the smart home: Translating human hierarchies to intelligent environments
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-02478-8_137Proceedings of 10th International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, IWANN 2009, Salamanca, Spain.Ubiquitous computing research have extended traditional environments in the soâcalled Intelligent Environments. All of them use their capabilities for pursuing their inhabitantsâs satisfaction, but the ways of getting it are most of the times unclear and frequently unshared among different users. This last problem becomes patent in shared environments
in which users with different preferences live together. This article presents a solution translating human hierarchies to the Ubicomp domain, in a continuing effort for leveraging the control capabilities of the inhabitants in their onâgrowing capable environments. This mechanism, as a natural ubicomp extension of the coordination mechanism used daily by humans, has been implemented over a real environment: a iving room equipped with ambient intelligence capabilities, and installed in two more: an intelligent classroom and an intelligent secure room. This work was partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology through the HADA project(TIN2007-64718) and by the chair UAMâIndra of Ambient Intelligenc
Finding iteration patterns in dynamic Web page authoring
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/11431879_10Revised Selected Papers of the Joint Working Conferences EHCI-DSVIS 2004, Hamburg, Germany, July 11-13, 2004Most of the current WWW is made up of dynamic pages. The development of dynamic pages is a difficult and costly endeavour, out-of-reach for most users, experts, and content producers. We have developed a set of techniques to support the edition of dynamic web pages in a WYSIWYG environment. In this paper we focus on specific techniques for inferring changes to page generation procedures from users actions on examples of the pages generated by these procedures. More specifically, we propose techniques for detecting iteration patterns in usersâ behavior in web page editing tasks involving page structures like lists, tables and other iterative HTML constructs. Such patterns are used in our authoring tool, DESK, where a specialized assistant, DESK-A, detects iteration patterns and generates, using Programming by Example, a programmatic representation of the userâs actions. Iteration patterns help obtain a more detailed characterization of usersâ intent, based on user monitoring techniques, that is put in relation to application knowledge automatically extracted by our system from HTML pages. DESK-A relieves end-users from having to learn programming and specification languages for editing dynamic-generated web pages. The work reported in this paper is being supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science

Kinect vs. low-cost inertial sensing for gesture recognition
In this paper, we investigate efficient recognition of human gestures / movements from multimedia and multimodal data, including the Microsoft Kinect and translational and rotational acceleration and velocity from wearable inertial sensors. We firstly present a system that automatically classifies a large range of activities (17 different gestures) using a random forest decision tree. Our system can achieve near real time recognition by appropriately selecting the sensors that led to the greatest contributing factor for a particular task. Features extracted from multimodal sensor data were used to train and evaluate a customized classifier. This novel technique is capable of successfully classifying various gestures with up to 91 % overall accuracy on a publicly available data set. Secondly we investigate a wide range of different motion capture modalities and compare their results in terms of gesture recognition accuracy using our proposed approach. We conclude that gesture recognition can be effectively performed by considering an approach that overcomes many of the limitations associated with the Kinect and potentially paves the way for low-cost gesture recognition in unconstrained environments
Four methods for determining the composition of trace radioactive surface contamination of low-radioactivity metal
Four methods for determining the composition of low-level uranium- and
thorium-chain surface contamination are presented. One method is the
observation of Cherenkov light production in water. In two additional methods a
position-sensitive proportional counter surrounding the surface is used to make
both a measurement of the energy spectrum of alpha particle emissions and also
coincidence measurements to derive the thorium-chain content based on the
presence of short-lived isotopes in that decay chain. The fourth method is a
radiochemical technique in which the surface is eluted with a weak acid, the
eluate is concentrated, added to liquid scintillator and assayed by recording
beta-alpha coincidences. These methods were used to characterize two `hotspots'
on the outer surface of one of the He-3 proportional counters in the Neutral
Current Detection array of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory experiment. The
methods have similar sensitivities, of order tens of ng, to both thorium- and
uranium-chain contamination.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figure
Baryonic Response of Dense Holographic QCD
The response function of a homogeneous and dense hadronic system to a
time-dependent (baryon) vector potential is discussed for holographic dense QCD
(D4/D8 embedding) both in the confined and deconfined phases. Confined
holographic QCD is an uncompressible and static baryonic insulator at large N_c
and large \lambda, with a gapped vector spectrum and a massless pion.
Deconfined holographic QCD is a diffusive conductor with restored chiral
symmetry and a gapped transverse baryonic current. Similarly, dense D3/D7 is
diffusive for any non-zero temperature at large N_c and large \lambda. At zero
temperature dense D3/D7 exhibits a baryonic longitudinal visco-elastic mode
with a first sound speed \lambda/\sqrt{3} and a small width due to a shear
viscosity to baryon ratio \eta/n_B=\hbar/4. This mode is turned diffusive by
arbitrarily small temperatures, a hallmark of holography.Comment: V2: 47 pages, 7 figures, references added, typos correcte
On unquenched N=2 holographic flavor
The addition of fundamental degrees of freedom to a theory which is dual (at
low energies) to N=2 SYM in 1+3 dimensions is studied. The gauge theory lives
on a stack of Nc D5 branes wrapping an S^2 with the appropriate twist, while
the fundamental hypermultiplets are introduced by adding a different set of Nf
D5-branes. In a simple case, a system of first order equations taking into
account the backreaction of the flavor branes is derived (Nf/Nc is kept of
order 1). From it, the modification of the holomorphic coupling is computed
explicitly. Mesonic excitations are also discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure
Mesons in marginally deformed AdS/CFT
We study the embedding of spacetime filling D7-branes in beta-deformed
backgrounds which, according to the AdS/CFT dictionary, corresponds to
flavoring beta-deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills. We consider supersymmetric and
more general non-supersymmetric three parameter deformations. The equations of
motion for quadratic fluctuations of a probe D7-brane wrapped on a deformed
three-sphere exhibit a non-trivial coupling between scalar and vector modes
induced by the deformation. Nevertheless, we manage to solve them analytically
and find that the mesonic mass spectrum is discrete, with a mass gap and a
Zeeman-like splitting occurs. Finally we propose the action for the dual field
theory as obtained by star-product deformation of super Yang-Mills with
fundamental matter.Comment: LaTex, 42 pages, 3 figures, uses JHEP
