    Demographics by depth: spatially explicit life-history dynamics of a protogynous reef fish

    Distribution and demographics of the hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) were investigated by using a combined approach of in situ observations and life history analyses. Presence, density, size, age, and size and age at sex change all varied with depth in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Hogfish (64–774 mm fork length and 0–19 years old) were observed year-round and were most common over complex, natural hard bottom habitat. As depth increased, the presence and density of hogfish decreased, but mean size and age increased. Size at age was smaller nearshore (<30 m). Length and age at sex change of nearshore hogfish were half those of offshore hogfish and were coincident with the minimum legal size limit. Fishing pressure is presumably greater nearshore and presents a confounding source of increased mortality; however, a strong red tide occurred the year before this study began and likely also affected nearshore demographics. Nevertheless, these data indicate ontogenetic migration and escapement of fast-growing fish to offshore habitat, both of which should reduce the likelihood of fishing-induced evolution. Data regarding the hogfish fishery are limited and regionally dependent, which has confounded previous stock assessments; however, the spatially explicit vital rates reported herein can be applied to future monitoring efforts

    Consider a symmetric unitary random matrix V=(vij)1i,jNV=(v_{ij})_{1 \le i,j \le N} from a circular orthogonal ensemble. In this paper, we study moments of a single entry vijv_{ij}. For a diagonal entry viiv_{ii} we give the explicit values of the moments, and for an off-diagonal entry vijv_{ij} we give leading and subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion with respect to a large matrix size NN. Our technique is to apply the Weingarten calculus for a Haar-distributed unitary matrix.Comment: 17 page

    η\eta production off the proton in a Regge-plus-chiral quark approach

    A chiral constituent quark model approach, embodying s- and u-channel exchanges,complemented with a Reggeized treatment for t-channel is presented. A model is obtained allowing data for πpηn\pi^- p \to \eta n and γpηp\gamma p \to \eta p to be describe satisfactorily. For the latter reaction, recently released data by CLAS and CBELSA/TAPS Collaborations in the system total energy range 1.6W2.81.6 \lesssim W \lesssim 2.8 GeV are well reproduced due to the inclusion of Reggeized trajectories instead of simple ρ\rho and ω\omega poles. Contribution from "missing" resonances is found to be negligible in the considered processes.Comment: 23 pages.4 figures,4 tables, to appear in Phys.Rev.

    Older adults and withdrawal from benzodiazepine hypnotics in general practice: effects on cognitive function, sleep, mood and quality of life

    Background: Older adults are the main recipients of repeat prescriptions for benzodiazepine (BZD) hypnotics. BZDs can impair cognitive function and may not aid sleep when taken continuously for years. This study therefore aimed to determine if withdrawing from BZDs leads to changes in patients' cognitive function, quality of life, mood and sleep. Method: One hundred and ninety-two long-term users of BZD hypnotics, aged [gt-or-equal, slanted]65 years, were identified in 25 general practices. One hundred and four who wished to withdraw were randomly allocated to one of two groups under double-blind, placebo controlled conditions: group A's BZD dose was tapered from week 1 of the trial; group B were given their usual dose for 12 weeks and then it was tapered. An additional group (C) of 35 patients who did not wish to withdraw from BZDs participated as ‘continuers’. All patients were assessed at 0, 12 and 24 weeks and 50% were re-assessed at 52 weeks. Results: Sixty per cent of patients had taken BZDs continuously for >10 years; 27% for >20 years. Of all patients beginning the trial, 80% had successfully withdrawn 6 months later. There was little difference between groups A and B, but these groups differed from continuers (C) in that the performance of the withdrawers on several cognitive/psychomotor tasks showed relative improvements at 24 or 52 weeks. Withdrawers and continuers did not differ in sleep or BZD withdrawal symptoms. Conclusions: These results have clear implications for clinical practice. Withdrawal from BZDs produces some subtle cognitive advantages for older people, yet little in the way of withdrawal symptoms or emergent sleep difficulties. These findings also suggest that, taken long-term, BZDs do not aid sleep

    General moments of the inverse real Wishart distribution and orthogonal Weingarten functions

    Let WW be a random positive definite symmetric matrix distributed according to a real Wishart distribution and let W1=(Wij)i,jW^{-1}=(W^{ij})_{i,j} be its inverse matrix. We compute general moments E[Wk1k2Wk3k4...Wk2n1k2n]\mathbb{E} [W^{k_1 k_2} W^{k_3 k_4} ... W^{k_{2n-1}k_{2n}}] explicitly. To do so, we employ the orthogonal Weingarten function, which was recently introduced in the study for Haar-distributed orthogonal matrices.     Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions in a light-cone quark model

    The leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are studied in a light-cone description of the nucleon where the Fock expansion is truncated to consider only valence quarks. General analytic expressions are derived in terms of the six amplitudes needed to describe the three-quark sector of the nucleon light-cone wave function. Numerical calculations for the T-even TMDs are presented in a light-cone constituent quark model, and the role of the so-called pretzelosity is investigated to produce a nonspherical shape of the nucleon.Comment: references added and typos corrected; version to appear in Phys.     Lifetime cost effectiveness of simvastatin in a range of risk groups and age groups derived from a randomised trial of 20,536 people

    &lt;i&gt;Objectives&lt;/i&gt;: To evaluate the cost effectiveness of 40 mg simvastatin daily continued for life in people of different ages with differing risks of vascular disease. Design A model developed from a randomised trial was used to estimate lifetime risks of vascular events and costs of treatment and hospital admissions in the United Kingdom. &lt;i&gt;Setting&lt;/i&gt;: 69 hospitals in the UK. &lt;i&gt;Participants&lt;/i&gt;: 20 536 men and women (aged 40-80) with coronary disease, other occlusive arterial disease, or diabetes. &lt;i&gt;Interventions&lt;/i&gt;: 40 mg simvastatin daily versus placebo for an average of 5 years. &lt;i&gt;Main&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;outcome&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;measures&lt;/i&gt;: Cost effectiveness of 40 mg simvastatin daily expressed as additional cost per life year gained. Major vascular event defined as non-fatal myocardial infarction or death from coronary disease, any stroke, or revascularisation procedure. Results were extrapolated to younger and older age groups at lower risk of vascular disease than were studied directly, as well as to lifetime treatment. &lt;i&gt;Results&lt;/i&gt;: At the April 2005 UK price of £4.87 (&#8364;7; $9) per 28 day pack of generic 40 mg simvastatin, lifetime treatment was cost saving in most age groups and vascular disease risk groups studied directly. Gains in life expectancy and cost savings decreased with increasing age and with decreasing risk of vascular disease. People aged 40-49 with 5 year risks of major vascular events of 42% and 12% at start of treatment gained 2.49 and 1.67 life years, respectively. Treatment with statins remained cost saving or cost less than £2500 per life year gained in people as young as 35 years or as old as 85 with 5 year risks of a major vascular event as low as 5% at the start of treatment. &lt;i&gt;Conclusions&lt;/i&gt;: Treatment with statins is cost effective in a wider population than is routinely treated at present

    Multiplexed Memory-Insensitive Quantum Repeaters

    Long-distance quantum communication via distant pairs of entangled quantum bits (qubits) is the first step towards more secure message transmission and distributed quantum computing. To date, the most promising proposals require quantum repeaters to mitigate the exponential decrease in communication rate due to optical fiber losses. However, these are exquisitely sensitive to the lifetimes of their memory elements. We propose a multiplexing of quantum nodes that should enable the construction of quantum networks that are largely insensitive to the coherence times of the quantum memory elements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     Nonlinearity of vacuum reggeons and exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons at HERA

    The processes of exclusive photo- and electroproduction of vector mesons ρ0\rho^0(770), ϕ\phi(1020) and J/ψJ/\psi(3096) at collision energies 30GeV<W<300GeV30 GeV<W<300 GeV and transferred momenta squared 0<t<2GeV20<-t<2 GeV^2 are considered in the framework of a phenomenological Regge-eikonal scheme with nonlinear Regge trajectories in which their QCD asymptotic behavior is taken into account explicitly. By comparison of available experimental data from ZEUS and H1 Collaborations with the model predictions it is demonstrated that corresponding angular distributions and integrated cross-sections in the above-mentioned kinematical range can be quantitatively described with use of two CC-even vacuum Regge trajectories. These are the "soft" pomeron dominating the high energy reactions without a hard scale and the "hard" pomeron giving an essential contribution to photo- and electroproduction of heavy vector mesons and deeply virtual electroproduction of light vector mesons.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure
