Nitric oxide, cell multiplication, and cell survival
Arrest of cell division is crucial for cells to enter a program of terminal differentiation. In the developing organ or a differentiating tissue, growth arrest defines roughly the size of the cellular population that is further committed to become a domain of differentiated cells. Eventually, the balance between the number of cell divisions and the extent of subsequent programmed cell death determines the final size of a domain, a tissue, or an organ (for review, see Bryant and Simpson 1984; Raff 1992, 1996). Mitogenesis, cytostasis, and survival of neuronal cells can be induced and maintained by the same or by different growth or trophic factors. The signaling pathways that coordinate proliferation, growth arrest, and survival of cells and groups of cells in developing organisms are not known, but they probably involve as yet undetermined inter- and intra-cellular second messenger molecules
Evolution of the electronic structure across the filling-control and bandwidth-control metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore-type Ru oxides
We have performed photoemission and soft x-ray absorption studies of
pyrochlore-type Ru oxides, namely, the filling-control system
SmCaRuO and the bandwidth-control system
SmBiRuO, which show insulator-to-metal transition with
increasing Ca and Bi concentration, respectively. Core levels and the O 2
valence band in SmCaRuO show almost the same amount of
monotonous upward energy shifts with Ca concentration, which indicates that the
chemical potential is shifted downward due to hole doping. The Ru 4 band in
SmCaRuO is also shifted toward the Fermi level () with
hole doping and the density of states (DOS) at increases. The core levels
in SmBiRuO, on the other hand, do not show clear energy
shifts except for the Ru 3 core level, whose line shape change also reflects
the increase of metallic screening with Bi concentration. We observe pronounced
spectral weight transfer from the incoherent to the coherent parts of the Ru 4d
band with Bi concentration, which is expected for a bandwidth-control
Mott-Hubbard system. The increase of the DOS at is more abrupt in the
bandwidth-control SmBiRuO than in the filling-control
SmCaRuO, in accordance with a recent theoretical
prediction. Effects of charge transfer between the Bi 6 band and the Ru

Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 across the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition
Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3, which is ferromagnetic for Sr concentration x > 0.3, has
been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in Ru 3p and O 1s
core-level x-ray absorption. XMCD signals appear at x ~ 0.3 and monotonically
increases with x in the ferromagnetic phase. While the monotonic increase of
the XMCD signals with x is of a typical Stoner-type, the absence of appreciable
change in the spectral line shapes of both the Ru 3p and O 1s XMCD spectra
indicate that the itinerant-electron ferromagnetism in Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 is

Local electronic structure of Cr in the II-VI diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor ZnCrTe
The electronic structure of the Cr ions in the diluted ferromagnetic
semiconductor ZnCrTe ( and 0.15) thin films has been
investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission
spectroscopy (PES). Magnetic-field () and temperature () dependences of
the Cr XMCD spectra well correspond to the magnetization measured by a
SQUID magnetometer. The line shape of the Cr XMCD spectra is independent
of , , and , indicating that the ferromagnetism is originated from the
same electronic states of the Cr ion. Cluster-model analysis indicates that
although there are two or more kinds of Cr ions in the ZnCrTe
samples, the ferromagnetic XMCD signal is originated from Cr ions substituted
for the Zn site. The Cr 3d partial density of states extracted using Cr resonant PES shows a broad feature near the top of the valence band,
suggesting strong ,- hybridization. No density of states is detected
at the Fermi level, consistent with their insulating behavior. Based on these
findings, we conclude that double exchange mechanism cannot explain the

Fungal Endophyte Diversity in Sarracenia
Fungal endophytes were isolated from 4 species of the carnivorous pitcher plant genus Sarracenia: S. minor, S. oreophila, S. purpurea, and S. psittacina. Twelve taxa of fungi, 8 within the Ascomycota and 4 within the Basidiomycota, were identified based on PCR amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA) with taxonomic identity assigned using the NCBI nucleotide megablast search tool. Endophytes are known to produce a large number of metabolites, some of which may contribute to the protection and survival of the host. We speculate that endophyte-infected Sarracenia may benefit from their fungal associates by their influence on nutrient availability from within pitchers and, possibly, by directly influencing the biota within pitchers
High-resolution imaging of human atherosclerotic carotid plaques with micro18F-FDG PET scanning exploring plaque vulnerability
FDG-PET can be used to identify vulnerable plaques in atherosclerotic disease. Clinical FDG-PET camera systems are restricted in terms of resolution for the visualization of detailed inflammation patterns in smaller vascular structures. The aim of the study is to evaluate the possible added value of a high-resolution microPET system in excised carotid plaques using FDG. In this study, 17 patients with planned carotid endarterectomy were included. Excised plaques were incubated in FDG and subsequently imaged with microPET. Macrophage presence in plaques was evaluated semi-quantitatively by immunohistochemistry. Plaque calcification was assessed additionally with CT and correlated to FDG uptake. Finally, FDG uptake and macrophage infiltration were compared with patient symptomatology. Heterogeneous distributions and variable intensities of FDG uptake were found within the plaques. A positive correlation between the distribution of macrophages and the FDG uptake (r = 0.68, P <.01) was found. A negative correlation was found between areas of calcifications and FDG uptake (r = -0.84, P <.001). Ratio FDG(max) values as well as degree of CD68 accumulation were significantly higher in CVA patients compared with TIA or amaurosis fugax patients (P <.05) and CVA patients compared with asymptomatic patients (P <.05). This ex vivo study demonstrates that excised carotid plaques can be visualized in detail using FDG microPET. Enhancement of clinical PET/CT resolution for similar imaging results in patients is needed
A window into fungal endophytism in Salicornia europaea: deciphering fungal characteristics as plant growth promoting agents
Aim Plant-endophytic associations exist only when equilibrium is maintained between both partners. This study analyses the properties of endophytic fungi
inhabiting a halophyte growing in high soil salinity and tests whether these fungi are beneficial or detrimental when non-host plants are inoculated.
Method Fungi were isolated from Salicornia europaea collected from two sites differing in salinization history (anthropogenic and naturally saline) and analyzed for plant growth promoting abilities and non-host plant interactions.
Results Most isolated fungi belonged to Ascomycota (96%) including dematiaceous fungi and commonly known plant pathogens and saprobes. The strains were
metabolically active for siderophores, polyamines and indole-3-acetic acid (mainly Aureobasidium sp.) with very low activity for phosphatases. Many showed proteolytic, lipolytic, chitinolytic, cellulolytic and amylolytic activities but low pectolytic activity. Different activities between similar fungal species found in both sites were particularly seen for Epiccocum sp., Arthrinium sp. and
Trichoderma sp. Inoculating the non-host Lolium perenne with selected fungi increased plant growth, mainly in the symbiont (Epichloë)-free variety.
Arthrinium gamsii CR1-9 and Stereum gausapatum ISK3-11 were most effective for plant growth promotion.
Conclusions This research suggests that host lifestyle and soil characteristics have a strong effect on endophytic fungi, and environmental stress could disturb the
plant-fungi relations. In favourable conditions, these fungi may be effective in facilitating crop production in non-cultivable saline lands
Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, ventilation management, and outcomes in invasively ventilated intensive care unit patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome: a pooled analysis of four observational studies
Background: Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, the practice of ventilation, and outcome in invasively ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain unexplored. In this analysis we aim to address these gaps using individual patient data of four large observational studies. Methods: In this pooled analysis we harmonised individual patient data from the ERICC, LUNG SAFE, PRoVENT, and PRoVENT-iMiC prospective observational studies, which were conducted from June, 2011, to December, 2018, in 534 ICUs in 54 countries. We used the 2016 World Bank classification to define two geoeconomic regions: middle-income countries (MICs) and high-income countries (HICs). ARDS was defined according to the Berlin criteria. Descriptive statistics were used to compare patients in MICs versus HICs. The primary outcome was the use of low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) for the first 3 days of mechanical ventilation. Secondary outcomes were key ventilation parameters (tidal volume size, positive end-expiratory pressure, fraction of inspired oxygen, peak pressure, plateau pressure, driving pressure, and respiratory rate), patient characteristics, the risk for and actual development of acute respiratory distress syndrome after the first day of ventilation, duration of ventilation, ICU length of stay, and ICU mortality. Findings: Of the 7608 patients included in the original studies, this analysis included 3852 patients without ARDS, of whom 2345 were from MICs and 1507 were from HICs. Patients in MICs were younger, shorter and with a slightly lower body-mass index, more often had diabetes and active cancer, but less often chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure than patients from HICs. Sequential organ failure assessment scores were similar in MICs and HICs. Use of LTVV in MICs and HICs was comparable (42\ub74% vs 44\ub72%; absolute difference \u20131\ub769 [\u20139\ub758 to 6\ub711] p=0\ub767; data available in 3174 [82%] of 3852 patients). The median applied positive end expiratory pressure was lower in MICs than in HICs (5 [IQR 5\u20138] vs 6 [5\u20138] cm H2O; p=0\ub70011). ICU mortality was higher in MICs than in HICs (30\ub75% vs 19\ub79%; p=0\ub70004; adjusted effect 16\ub741% [95% CI 9\ub752\u201323\ub752]; p<0\ub70001) and was inversely associated with gross domestic product (adjusted odds ratio for a US$10 000 increase per capita 0\ub780 [95% CI 0\ub775\u20130\ub786]; p<0\ub70001). Interpretation: Despite similar disease severity and ventilation management, ICU mortality in patients without ARDS is higher in MICs than in HICs, with a strong association with country-level economic status.
