    Review of group A rotavirus strains reported in swine and cattle

    Group A rotavirus (RVA) infections cause severe economic losses in intensively reared livestock animals, particularly in herds of swine and cattle. RVA strains are antigenically heterogeneous, and are classified in multiple G and P types defined by the two outer capsid proteins, VP7 and VP4, respectively. This study summarizes published literature on the genetic and antigenic diversity of porcine and bovine RVA strains published over the last 3 decades. The single most prevalent genotype combination among porcine RVA strains was G5P[7], whereas the predominant genotype combination among bovine RVA strains was G6P[5], although spatiotemporal differences in RVA strain distribution were observed. These data provide important baseline data on epidemiologically important RVA strains in swine and cattle and may guide the development of more effective vaccines for veterinary use

    Statistical Analysis of 100 Gbps per Wavelength SWDM VCSEL-MMF Data Center Links on a Large Set of OM3 and OM4 Fibers

    We present a detailed statistical study on achievable reach of 100 Gbps data center optical links based on vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) and multimode fibers (MMF). Based on the characterization of the spectral and spatial properties of eight lasers and of the modal and dispersion behavior of a large set of 20233 OM3 and OM4 modeled fibers (obtained by properly extending an initial set of 500 measured fibers), we compute the resulting frequency responses of all of the VCSEL-MMF combinations. Then, we feed them to a numerical tool modeling PAM-4 transmission at 100 Gbps net bit rate per wavelength. Our model analyzes performance at distances up to 400 meters, using three different adaptive equalizers at the receiver and considering two forward error correction overheads. We show that 100 Gbps operation is feasible for 99% of the simulated links reaching up to 120 m over OM4 at 850 nm and using a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Aggregated data rates of 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps per fiber using Shortwave Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM) are achievable for 99% of the links reaching 80 m over OM4 using two wavelengths and feed-forward equalizer (FFE) and four wavelengths and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE)-based equalizer, respectively

    Persistent organic pollutants in feathers of the Greater rhea (Rhea americana), a near-threatened flightless bird of the Pampas grasslands

    Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are still globally distributed and can exert different effects on ecosystems. Little is known about the occurrence of these contaminants in terrestrial birds from South America. In this study, POPs were assessed for the first time in a flightless herbivorous species from the Pampas grasslands, the Greater rhea (Rhea americana). Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), were determined in 18 samples of feathers from free-ranging and captive individuals inhabiting four sites with different land use in central Argentina. Among the 16 POPs tested in those feathers, 6 PCBs (28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180) and 8 OCPs (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, p,p´-DDE, p,p´-DDD, o,p´-DDT, p,p´-DDT and HCB) were quantified. No PBDEs were detected. Total concentration of POPs was higher in populations living in an intensive crop production area (Agriculture: 159 ng.g-1 and Farm: 97.53 ng.g-1) compared to the population in an urban area (Zoo: 45.86 ng/g) and an agroecosystem with extensive rearing of livestock (Cattle rearing: 36.77 ng.g-1). PCBs were the most abundant pollutants in all the populations studied. Lower chlorinated CB 52 and CB 101 were the principal PCB congeners detected, representing at least 70% of the total quantified. All populations studied showed a DDE + DDD / DDT ratio > 1, indicating a historical application of this insecticide. This study provides a new contribution to the scarce data on POP concentrations in South American bird species.     Molecular identification and characterization of a genotype 3 hepatitis e virus (HEV) strain detected in a wolf faecal sample, Italy

    Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a major health problem worldwide. In developed countries, zoonotic transmission of HEV genotypes (Gt) 3 and 4 is caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked meat of infected pigs and wild boars, the main reservoirs of HEV. However, additional animals may harbour HEV or HEV-related strains, including carnivores. In this study, we investigated the molecular epidemiology of orthohepeviruses in wild canids by screening a total of 136 archival faecal samples, collected from wolves (42) and red foxes (94) in Northwestern Italy. Orthohepevirus RNA was identified in a faecal specimen, collected from a wolf carcass in the province of La Spezia (Liguria Region, Italy). The nearly full-length (7212 nucleotides) genome of the strain HEV/81236/Wolf/2019/ITA (GenBank accession no. MZ463196) was determined by combining a sequence-independent single-primer amplification (SISPA) approach with the Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platform. Upon phylogenetic analysis, the HEV detected in wolf was segregated into clade HEV-3.1, displaying the highest nucleotide (nt) identity (89.0–93.3%) to Gt3 strains belonging to subtype c. Interestingly, the wolf faecal sample also contained porcine astrovirus sequences, endorsing the hypothesis of a dietary origin of the HEV strain due to preying habits

    Discovery and Genomic Characterization of Noroviruses from a Gastroenteritis Outbreak in Domestic Cats in the US

    Norovirus (NoV) RNA was detected in the stools of 6 out 14 (42.8%) 8–12-week-old cats with enteritis from a feline shelter, in New York State. Upon sequence analysis of the complete capsid, the six NoVs were found to be identical, suggesting the spread of a unique NoV strain in the shelter. The full-length genomic sequence (7839 nt) of one feline NoV, CU081210E/2010/US, was determined. In the capsid protein VP1 region, the virus displayed the highest amino acid identity to animal genogroup IV genotype 2 (GIV.2) NoVs: lion/Pistoia-387/06/IT (97.9%) and dog/Bari-170/07/IT (90.4%). These findings document the discovery of a novel feline calicivirus, different from vesiviruses, and extend the spectrum of NoV host range. Epidemiological studies using feline NoV-specific diagnostic tools and experimental infection of cats are required to understand whether NoVs have a pathogenic role in this species
