Surface ozone measurements at Taliarte, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain)
From December 1990 tropospheric ozone concentrations have been measured at Taliarte station (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands). Taliarte’s measurements are of great interest because of its proximity to Izaña BAPMoN observatory
(Tenerife, Canary Islands) and its relative distance to high-pollution regions. A comparative study with other North-Atlantic stations has been carried out. In order to
compare possible analogies and differences, a comparative study has been carried out. Studies involve seasonal cycle, diurnal oscillation and long-range transport. Ozone concentrations at Taliarte show high sensitivity to transport from higher latitudes. For diurnal variations, two different patterns have been found: “trade winds” and “marine breeze” situations
Suppression of electron-electron repulsion and superconductivity in Ultra Small Carbon Nanotubes
Recently, ultra-small-diameter Single Wall Nano Tubes with diameter of have been produced and many unusual properties were observed, such as
superconductivity, leading to a transition temperature , much
larger than that observed in the bundles of larger diameter tubes.
By a comparison between two different approaches, we discuss the issue
whether a superconducting behavior in these carbon nanotubes can arise by a
purely electronic mechanism. The first approach is based on the Luttinger Model
while the second one, which emphasizes the role of the lattice and short range
interaction, is developed starting from the Hubbard Hamiltonian. By using the
latter model we predict a transition temperature of the same order of magnitude

Prevalence of drug-herb and drug-supplement interactions in older adults : A cross-sectional survey
© British Journal of General PracticeBackground Polypharmacy is common among older adults, with increasing numbers also using prescription drugs with herbal medicinal products (HMPs) and dietary supplements. There is no reliable evidence from the UK on concurrent use of HMPs and dietary supplements with prescription drugs in older adults. Aim To establish prevalence of concurrent prescription drugs, HMPs, and dietary supplements among UK community-dwelling older adults and identify potential interactions. Design and setting Cross-sectional survey of older adults registered at two general practices in South East England. Method A questionnaire asking about prescription medications, HMPs, and sociodemographic information was posted to 400 older adults aged ≥65 years, identified as taking ≥1 prescription drug. Results In total 155 questionnaires were returned (response rate = 38.8%) and the prevalence of concurrent HMPs and dietary supplements with prescriptions was 33.6%. Females were more likely than males to be concurrent users (43.4% versus 22.5%; P = 0.009). The number of HMPs and dietary supplements ranged from 1 to 8, (mean = 3, median = 1; standard deviation = 1.65). The majority of concurrent users (78.0%) used dietary supplements with prescription drugs. The most commonly used dietary supplements were cod liver oil, glucosamine, multivitamins, and Vitamin D. Others (20.0%) used only HMPs with prescription drugs. Common HMPs were evening primrose oil, valerian, and Nytol Herbal® (a combination of hops, gentian, and passion flower). Sixteen participants (32.6%) were at risk of potential adverse drug interactions. Conclusion GPs should routinely ask questions regarding herbal and supplement use, to identify and manage older adults at potential risk of adverse drug interactions.Peer reviewe
The detached dust shells of AQ And, U Ant, and TT Cyg
Detached circumstellar dust shells are detected around three carbon variables
using Herschel-PACS. Two of them are already known on the basis of their
thermal CO emission and two are visible as extensions in IRAS imaging data. By
model fits to the new data sets, physical sizes, expansion timescales, dust
temperatures, and more are deduced. A comparison with existing molecular CO
material shows a high degree of correlation for TT Cyg and U Ant but a few

Strong Lensing Model of SPT-CLJ0356-5337, a Major Merger Candidate at Redshift 1.0359
We present an analysis of the mass distribution inferred from strong lensing
by SPT-CL J0356-5337, a cluster of galaxies at redshift z = 1.0359 revealed in
the follow-up of the SPT-SZ clusters. The cluster has an Einstein radius of
Erad=14 for a source at z = 3 and a mass within 500 kpc of M_500kpc =
4.0+-0.8x10^14Msol. Our spectroscopic identification of three multiply-imaged
systems (z = 2.363, z = 2.364, and z = 3.048), combined with HST F606W-band
imaging allows us to build a strong lensing model for this cluster with an rms
of <0.3'' between the predicted and measured positions of the multiple images.
Our modeling reveals a two-component mass distribution in the cluster. One mass
component is dominated by the brightest cluster galaxy and the other component,
separated by ~170 kpc, contains a group of eight red elliptical galaxies
confined in a ~9'' (~70 kpc) diameter circle. We estimate the mass ratio
between the two components to be between 1:1.25 and 1:1.58. In addition,
spectroscopic data reveal that these two near-equal mass cores have only a
small velocity difference of 300 km/s between the two components. This small
radial velocity difference suggests that most of the relative velocity takes
place in the plane of the sky, and implies that SPT-CL J0356-5337 is a major
merger with a small impact parameter seen face-on. We also assess the relative
contributions of galaxy-scale halos to the overall mass of the core of the
cluster and find that within 800 kpc from the brightest cluster galaxy about
27% of the total mass can be attributed to visible and dark matter associated
with galaxies, whereas only 73% of the total mass in the core comes from
