The Ulysses Supplement to the BATSE 3B Catalog of Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present Interplanetary Network localization information for 218 gamma-ray
bursts in the 3rd BATSE catalog, obtained by analyzing the arrival times of
these bursts at the Ulysses and Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO)
spacecraft. For any given burst observed by these two spacecraft, arrival time
analysis (or "triangulation") results in an annulus of possible arrival
directions whose half-width varies between 7 arcseconds and 32 arcminutes,
depending on the intensity and time history of the burst, and the distance of
the Ulysses spacecraft from Earth. This annulus generally intersects the BATSE
error circle, resulting in an average reduction of the error box area of a

Gravitationally Lensed Gamma-Ray Bursts as Probes of Dark Compact Objects
If dark matter in the form of compact objects comprises a large fraction of
the mass of the universe, then gravitational lensing effects on gamma-ray
bursts are expected. We utilize BATSE and Ulysses data to search for lenses of
different mass ranges, which cause lensing in the milli, pico, and femto
regimes. Null results are used to set weak limits on the cosmological abundance
of compact objects in mass ranges from 10 to 10 . A
stronger limit is found for a much discussed universe dominated
by black holes of masses , which is ruled out at the

Firm Size, Technical Change and Wages: Evidence from the Pork Sector from 1990-2005
A long-standing puzzle in labor economics has been the positive relationship between wages and firm size. Even after controlling for worker's observed characteristics such as education, work experience, gender, and geographic location, a significant firm size wage effect averaging 15 percent remains. This paper investigates whether the size-wage premium on hog farms persists over time and whether the magnitude is growing or shrinking. The paper pays particular attention to the matching process by which workers are allocated to farms of different size and technology use, and whether the matching process may explain differences in wages across farms. The study relies on four surveys of employees on hog farms collected in 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005. The survey was conducted across the United States. The data allow us to evaluate how farm size and technology adoption have changed over time and how employee pay has changed in response to these changes. Detailed investigations of these pay differences between small and large hog farms and between farms using few and many technologies show that the differences cannot be explained away by differences in the education, work experience, or geographic location of the farm. Although more educated and experienced workers are more likely to work on larger and more technologically advanced hog farms, the positive relationships between wages and both farm size and technology remain large and statistically significant when differences in observable worker attributes are controlled. Furthermore, these effects are reinforcing in that large hog farms also adopt more technologies, and so the firm size effect persists even after differences in the number of technologies are held constant. The Interplanetary Network Supplement to the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Catalogs
Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the
interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also
detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera
experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network
consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations

Repetitive Segmental Structure of the Transducin β Subunit: Homology with the CDC4 Gene and Identification of Related mRNAs
Retinal transducin, a guanine nucleotide regulatory protein (referred to as a G protein) that activates a cGMP phosphodiesterase in photoreceptor cells, is comprised of three subunits. We have identified and analyzed cDNA clones of the bovine transducin β subunit that may be highly conserved or identical to that in other G proteins. From the cDNA nucleotide sequence of the entire coding region, the primary structure of a 340-amino acid protein was deduced. The encoded β subunit has a Mr of 37,375 and is comprised of repetitive homologous segments arranged in tandem. Furthermore, significant homology in primary structure and segmental sequence exists between the β subunit and the yeast CDC4 gene product. The Mr 37,375 β subunit polypeptide is encoded by a 2.9-kilobase (kb) mRNA. However, there exists in retina other β-related mRNAs that are divergent from the 2.9-kb mRNA on the basis of oligonucleotide and primer-extended probe hybridizations. All mammalian tissues and clonal cell lines that have been examined contain at least two β-related mRNAs, usually 1.8 and 2.9 kb in length. These results suggest that the mRNAs are the processed products of a small number of closely related genes or of a single highly complex β gene
Discovery of a luminous white dwarf in a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We have identified a candidate 1-2 x 10^5 year old luminous white dwarf in
NGC 1818, a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This discovery
strongly constrains the boundary mass M_c at which stars stop forming neutron

Large Torque Variations in Two Soft Gamma Repeaters
We have monitored the pulse frequencies of the two soft gamma repeaters SGR
1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 through the beginning of year 2001 using primarily
Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array observations. In both
sources, we observe large changes in the spin-down torque up to a factor of ~4,
which persist for several months. Using long baseline phase-connected timing
solutions as well as the overall frequency histories, we construct torque noise
power spectra for each SGR. The power spectrum of each source is very red
(power-law slope ~-3.5). The torque noise power levels are consistent with some
accreting systems on time scales of ~1 year, yet the full power spectrum is
much steeper in frequency than any known accreting source. To the best of our
knowledge, torque noise power spectra with a comparably steep frequency
dependence have only been seen in young, glitching radio pulsars (e.g. Vela).
The observed changes in spin-down rate do not correlate with burst activity,
therefore, the physical mechanisms behind each phenomenon are also likely
unrelated. Within the context of the magnetar model, seismic activity cannot
account for both the bursts and the long-term torque changes unless the

Temporal properties of gamma-ray bursts as signatures of jets from the central engine
A comprehensive temporal analysis has been performed on the 319 brightest
GRBs with T90>2s from the BATSE current catalog. The rise times, fall times,
full-widths at half maximum (FWHM), pulse amplitudes and pulse areas were
measured and the frequency distributions are presented here. The distribution
of time intervals between pulses is not random but compatible with a lognormal
distribution when allowance was made for the 64 ms time resolution and a small
excess (5%) of long duration intervals that is often referred to as a
Pareto-Levy tail. A range of correlations are presented on pulse and burst
properties. The rise and fall times, FWHM and area of the pulses are highly
correlated with each other. The time intervals between pulses and pulse
amplitudes of neighbouring pulses are correlated with each other. It was also
found that the number of pulses, N, in GRBs is strongly correlated with the
fluence and the duration and that can explain the well known correlation
between duration and fluence. The GRBs were sorted into three catagories based
on N i.e. 3=25. The properties of pulses before and after
the stongest pulse were compared for the three catagories of bursts. This
analysis revealed that the GRBs with large numbers of pulses have narrower and
faster pulses and also larger fluences, longer durations and higher hardness

Birthrates and delay times of Type Ia supernovae
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play an important role in diverse areas of
astrophysics, from the chemical evolution of galaxies to observational
cosmology. However, the nature of the progenitors of SNe Ia is still unclear.
In this paper, according to a detailed binary population synthesis study, we
obtained SN Ia birthrates and delay times from different progenitor models, and
compared them with observations. We find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from
the double-degenerate (DD) model is close to those inferred from observations,
while the birthrate from the single-degenerate (SD) model accounts for only
about 1/2-2/3 of the observations. If a single starburst is assumed, the
distribution of the delay times of SNe Ia from the SD model is a weak
bimodality, where the WD + He channel contributes to the SNe Ia with delay
times shorter than 100Myr, and the WD + MS and WD + RG channels to those with
