Sum Rules for Magnetic Moments and Polarizabilities in QED and Chiral Effective-Field Theory
We elaborate on a recently proposed extension of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn
(GDH) sum rule which is achieved by taking derivatives with respect to the
anomalous magnetic moment. The new sum rule features a {\it linear} relation
between the anomalous magnetic moment and the dispersion integral over a
cross-section quantity. We find some analogy of the linearized form of the GDH
sum rule with the `sideways dispersion relations'. As an example, we apply the
linear sum rule to reproduce the famous Schwinger's correction to the magnetic
moment in QED from a tree-level cross-section calculation and outline the
procedure for computing the two-loop correction from a one-loop cross-section
calculation. The polarizabilities of the electron in QED are considered as well
by using the other forward-Compton-scattering sum rules. We also employ the sum
rules to study the magnetic moment and polarizabilities of the nucleon in a
relativistic chiral EFT framework. In particular we investigate the chiral
extrapolation of these quantities.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures; several additions, published versio
Resonances in radiative hyperon decays
The importance of resonances for the radiative hyperon decays is examined in
the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Low lying baryon resonances are
included into the effective theory and tree contributions to these decays are
calculated. We find significant contributions to both the parity-conserving and
parity-violating decay amplitudes and a large negative value for the asymmetry
parameter in polarized Sigma^+ -> p gamma is found, in agreement with the
experimental result alpha(p Sigma^+) = -0.76 +/- 0.08.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Polaron self-trapping in a honeycomb net
Small polaron behavior in a two dimensional honeycomb net is studied by
applying the strong coupling perturbative method to the Holstein molecular
crystal model. We find that small optical polarons can be mobile also if the
electrons are strongly coupled to the lattice. Before the polarons localize and
become very heavy, there is infact a window of {\it e-ph} couplings in which
the polarons are small and have masses of order times the bare
band mass according to the value of the adiabaticity parameter. The 2D
honeycomb net favors the mobility of small optical polarons in comparison with
the square lattice.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in J.Phys.:Condensed Matter {PACS:

Generalized polarizabilities and the chiral structure of the nucleon
We discuss the virtual Compton scattering reaction at

A Review of Rare Pion and Muon Decays
After a decade of no measurements of pion and muon rare decays, PIBETA, a new
experimental program is producing its first results. We report on a new
experimental study of the pion beta decay, Pi(+) -> Pi(0) e(+) Nu, the Pi(e2
gamma) radiative decay, Pi(+) -> e(+) Nu Gamma, and muon radiative decay, Mu ->
e Nu Gamma. The new results represent four- to six-fold improvements in
precision over the previous measurements. Excellent agreement with Standard
Model predictions is observed in all channels except for one kinematic region
of the Pi(e2 gamma) radiative decay involving energetic photons and
lower-energy positrons.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, invited talk presented at MESON 2004,

Another proof of Gell-Mann and Low's theorem
The theorem by Gell-Mann and Low is a cornerstone in QFT and zero-temperature
many-body theory. The standard proof is based on Dyson's time-ordered expansion
of the propagator; a proof based on exact identities for the time-propagator is
here given.Comment: 5 page
Long distance regularization in chiral perturbation theory with decuplet
We investigate the use of long distance regularization in SU(3) baryon chiral
perturbation theory with decuplet fields. The one-loop decuplet contributions
to the octet baryon masses, axial couplings, S-wave nonleptonic hyperon decays
and magnetic moments are evaluated in a chirally consistent fashion by
employing a cutoff to implement long distance regularization. The convergence
of the chiral expansions of these quantities is improved compared to the
dimensionally regularized version which indicates that the propagation of
Goldstone bosons over distances smaller than a typical hadronic size, which is
beyond the regime of chiral perturbation theory but included by dimensional
regularization, is removed by use of a cutoff.Comment: 31 page
Polaron Effective Mass, Band Distortion, and Self-Trapping in the Holstein Molecular Crystal Model
We present polaron effective masses and selected polaron band structures of
the Holstein molecular crystal model in 1-D as computed by the Global-Local
variational method over a wide range of parameters. These results are augmented
and supported by leading orders of both weak- and strong-coupling perturbation
theory. The description of the polaron effective mass and polaron band
distortion that emerges from this work is comprehensive, spanning weak,
intermediate, and strong electron-phonon coupling, and non-adiabatic, weakly
adiabatic, and strongly adiabatic regimes. Using the effective mass as the
primary criterion, the self-trapping transition is precisely defined and
located. Using related band-shape criteria at the Brillouin zone edge, the
onset of band narrowing is also precisely defined and located. These two lines
divide the polaron parameter space into three regimes of distinct polaron
structure, essentially constituting a polaron phase diagram. Though the
self-trapping transition is thusly shown to be a broad and smooth phenomenon at
finite parameter values, consistency with notion of self-trapping as a critical
phenomenon in the adiabatic limit is demonstrated. Generalizations to higher
dimensions are considered, and resolutions of apparent conflicts with
well-known expectations of adiabatic theory are suggested.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figure
