On the Suprema Distribution of Gaussian Processes with Stationary Increment and Drift
In this report we study the suprema distribution of a class of Gaussian processes having stationary increments and negative drift using key results from ~Txtrerne Value Theory. We focus on deriving an asymptotic upper bound to the tail of the suprema distribution of such processes. Our bound is valid for both discrete- and continuous-time processes. VVe discuss the importance of the bound, its applicability to queueing problems, and show numerical examples to illustrate its performance
Understanding Students is the Key to Be a Good Professor
Unlike many writings about the quality of a “good professor” by educators in higher education, the authors attempt to identify the key attributes of good professors from the point of view of students, not professors. Through the open ended questionnaires administered without notification in business and economics classes with respondents remaining anonymous, the study reveals that the four most important attributes of being a good professor are understanding the students, organized presentations, enthusiastic excitement, and knowledge on the teaching subject. This data was gathered from business students of a state university in mid-west, USA. Based on the findings, the authors present strategies for success in classroom teaching along with practical suggestions for new aspiring professors who are eager to launch their teaching career as well as those that are eager to improve teaching performance in higher education
Forbidden ordinal patterns in higher dimensional dynamics
Forbidden ordinal patterns are ordinal patterns (or `rank blocks') that
cannot appear in the orbits generated by a map taking values on a linearly
ordered space, in which case we say that the map has forbidden patterns. Once a
map has a forbidden pattern of a given length , it has forbidden
patterns of any length and their number grows superexponentially
with . Using recent results on topological permutation entropy, we study in
this paper the existence and some basic properties of forbidden ordinal
patterns for self maps on n-dimensional intervals. Our most applicable
conclusion is that expansive interval maps with finite topological entropy have
necessarily forbidden patterns, although we conjecture that this is also the
case under more general conditions. The theoretical results are nicely
illustrated for n=2 both using the naive counting estimator for forbidden
patterns and Chao's estimator for the number of classes in a population. The
robustness of forbidden ordinal patterns against observational white noise is
also illustrated.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

Ascaroside Signaling Is Widely Conserved among Nematodes
Background: Nematodes are among the most successful animals on earth and include important human pathogens, yet little is known about nematode pheromone systems. A group of small molecules called ascarosides has been found to mediate mate finding, aggregation, and developmental diapause in Caenorhabditis elegans, but it is unknown whether ascaroside signaling exists outside of the genus Caenorhabditis.
Results: To determine whether ascarosides are used as signaling molecules by other nematode species, we performed a mass spectrometry-based screen for ascarosides in secretions from a variety of both free-living and parasitic (plant, insect, and animal) nematodes. We found that most of the species analyzed, including nematodes from several different clades, produce species-specific ascaroside mixtures. In some cases, ascaroside biosynthesis patterns appear to correlate with phylogeny, whereas in other cases, biosynthesis seems to correlate with lifestyle and ecological niche. We further show that ascarosides mediate distinct nematode behaviors, such as retention, avoidance, and long-range attraction, and that different nematode species respond to distinct, but overlapping, sets of ascarosides.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that nematodes utilize a conserved family of signaling molecules despite having evolved to occupy diverse ecologies. Their structural features and level of conservation are evocative of bacterial quorum sensing, where acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) are both produced and sensed by many species of gram-negative bacteria. The identification of species-specific ascaroside profiles may enable pheromone-based approaches to interfere with reproduction and survival of parasitic nematodes, which are responsible for significant agricultural losses and many human diseases worldwide
Unpacking overtourism as a discursive formation through interdiscursivity
Purpose As tourism destinations grapple with declines in tourist arrivals due to COVID-19 measures, scholarly debate on overtourism remains active, with discussions on solutions that could be enacted to contain the excessive regrowth of tourism and the return of “overtourism”. As social science holds an important role and responsibility to inform the debate on overtourism, this paper aims to understand overtourism by examining it as a discursive formation. Design/methodology/approach The paper explores recurring thematic threads in scholarly overtourism texts, given the phrases coherence as a nodal-point is partially held in place by a collective body of texts authored by a network of scholars who have invested in it. The paper uses interdiscursivity as an interpretative framework to identify overlapping thematic trajectories found in existing discourses. Findings Overtourism, as a discursive formation, determines what can and should be said about the self-evident “truths” of excessive tourist arrivals, the changes tourists bring to destinations and the range of discursive solutions available to manage or end overtourism. As the interpellation of these thematic threads into scholarly texts is based on a sense of crisis and urgency, the authors find that the themes contain rhetoric, arguments and metaphors that problematise tourists and construct them as objects in need of control and correction. Originality/value While the persistence of the discursive formation will be determined by the degree to which scholarly and other actors recognise themselves in it, this paper may enable overtourism scholars to become aware of the limits of their discursive domain and help them to expand the discourse or weave a new one. Purpose As tourism destinations grapple with declines in tourist arrivals due to COVID-19 measures, scholarly debate on overtourism remains active, with discussions on solutions that could be enacted to contain the excessive regrowth of tourism and the return of “overtourism”. Spin-3/2 Baryons in Lattice QCD
We present first results for masses of spin-3/2 baryons in lattice QCD, using a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators are constructed using fat links. In the isospin-1/2 sector, we observe, after appropriate spin and parity projection, a strong signal for the J^P=3/2^- state, and find good agreement between the 1/2^+ mass and earlier nucleon mass simulations with a spin-1/2 interpolating field. For the isospin-3/2 Delta states, clear mass splittings are observed between the various 1/2^+/- and 3/2^+/- channels, with the calculated level orderings in good agreement with those observed empirically
