    Absorption Systems In Radio-Selected QSO Surveys

    Radio-selected samples of quasars with complete optical identifications offer an ideal dataset with which to investigate dust bias associated with intervening absorption systems. Here, we review our work on the Complete Optical and Radio Absorption Line System (CORALS) survey whose aim is to quantify this bias and assess the impact of dust on absorber statistics. First, we review previously published results on the number density and gas content of high column density absorbers over the redshift range 0.6 < z < 3.5. We then present the latest results from CORALS which focus on measuring the metal content of our unbiased absorber sample and an investigation of their optical--IR colours. Overall we find that although dust is unarguably present in absorption galaxies, the level appears to be low enough that the statistics of previous magnitude limited samples have not been severely affected and that the subsequent reddening of background QSOs is small.Comment: Proceedings of IAUC199, Probing Galaxies through Quasar Absorption Lines, P.     We study a model with Majorana neutrino masses generated through doubly charged scalars at two-loop level. We give explicit relationships between the neutrino masses and the same sign dilepton decays of the doubly charged scalars. In particular, we demonstrate that at the tribimaximal limit of the neutrino mixings, the absolute neutrino masses and Majorana phases can be extracted through the measurements of the dilepton modes at colliders.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, references added, version to be published in PR

    Embryo impacts and gas giant mergers II: Diversity of Hot Jupiters' internal structure

    We consider the origin of compact, short-period, Jupiter-mass planets. We propose that their diverse structure is caused by giant impacts of embryos and super-Earths or mergers with other gas giants during the formation and evolution of these hot Jupiters. Through a series of numerical simulations, we show that typical head-on collisions generally lead to total coalescence of impinging gas giants. Although extremely energetic collisions can disintegrate the envelope of gas giants, these events seldom occur. During oblique and moderately energetic collisions, the merger products retain higher fraction of the colliders' cores than their envelopes. They can also deposit considerable amount of spin angular momentum to the gas giants and desynchronize their spins from their orbital mean motion. We find that the oblateness of gas giants can be used to infer the impact history. Subsequent dissipation of stellar tide inside the planets' envelope can lead to runaway inflation and potentially a substantial loss of gas through Roche-lobe overflow. The impact of super-Earths on parabolic orbits can also enlarge gas giant planets' envelope and elevates their tidal dissipation rate over ∼\sim 100 Myr time scale. Since giant impacts occur stochastically with a range of impactor sizes and energies, their diverse outcomes may account for the dispersion in the mass-radius relationship of hot Jupiters.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables.     Galaxy Morphology - Halo Gas Connections

    We studied a sample of 38 intermediate redshift MgII absorption-selected galaxies using (1) Keck/HIRES and VLT/UVES quasar spectra to measure the halo gas kinematics from MgII absorption profiles and (2) HST/WFPC-2 images to study the absorbing galaxy morphologies. We have searched for correlations between quantified gas absorption properties, and host galaxy impact parameters, inclinations, position angles, and quantified morphological parameters. We report a 3.2-sigma correlation between asymmetric perturbations in the host galaxy morphology and the MgII absorption equivalent width. We suggest that this correlation may indicate a connection between past merging and/or interaction events in MgII absorption-selected galaxies and the velocity dispersion and quantity of gas surrounding these galaxies.Comment: 6 pages; 3 figures; contributed talk for IAU 199: Probing Galaxies through Quasar Absorption Line
