The leafage of a chordal graph
The leafage l(G) of a chordal graph G is the minimum number of leaves of a
tree in which G has an intersection representation by subtrees. We obtain upper
and lower bounds on l(G) and compute it on special classes. The maximum of l(G)
on n-vertex graphs is n - lg n - (1/2) lg lg n + O(1). The proper leafage l*(G)
is the minimum number of leaves when no subtree may contain another; we obtain
upper and lower bounds on l*(G). Leafage equals proper leafage on claw-free
chordal graphs. We use asteroidal sets and structural properties of chordal

Temporal variations in scattering and dispersion measure in the Crab Pulsar and their effect on timing precision
We have measured variations in scattering time scales in the Crab Pulsar over
a 30-year period, using observations made at 610 MHz with the 42-ft telescope
at Jodrell Bank Observatory. Over more recent years, where regular Lovell
Telescope observations at frequencies around 1400 MHz were available, we have
also determined the dispersion measure variations, after disentangling the
scattering delay from the dispersive delay. We demonstrate a relationship
between scattering and dispersion measure variations, with a correlation
coefficient of . The short time scales over which these quantities
vary, the size of the variations, and the close correlation between scattering
and dispersion measure all suggest that the effects are due to discrete
structures within the Crab Nebula, with size scales of AU
(corresponding to an angular size of mas at an assumed distance of 2200
pc). We mitigate the effects of scattering on the observed pulse shape by using
the measured scattering information to modify the template used for generating
the pulse arrival times, thus improving the precision to which the pulsar can
be timed. We test this on timing data taken during periods of high scattering,
and obtain a factor of two improvement in the root mean square of the timing

Europe’s collective failure to address the refugee crisis
The European response to the refugee crisis has been lamentable. A preoccupation with numbers has, too often, ignored how each refugee is an individual, many of whom have experienced the most appalling conditions in their countries of origin and in transit. These stories are only rarely heard, when the cameras are there to capture the tragedies. In this commentary we review the challenges of responding to the health needs of refugees, including examples of best practice, but above all call for a concerted political response that will both reduce the pressure on refugees to flee conflict-afflicted countries and recognize their contribution if they do come to Europe

The use of low power modulated laser diode systems has previously been established as a suitable method for non-destructive laser generation of ultrasound. Using a quasi-continuous optical excitation amplified by an erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) allows flexible generation of ultrasonic waves, offering control of further parameters such as the frequency content or signal shape. In addition, pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) can be used to improve the detected impulse response. Here we compare two sequences, the m-sequence and the Golay code, and discuss the advantages and practical limits of their application with laser diode based optical excitation of ultrasound

Vibrational Stability of NLC Linac accelerating structure
The vibration of components of the NLC linac, such as accelerating structures
and girders, is being studied both experimentally and analytically. Various
effects are being considered including structural resonances and vibration
caused by cooling water in the accelerating structure. This paper reports the

Analysis of tethered balloon, ceilometer and class sounding data taken on San Nicolas Island during the FIRE project
During the FIRE Marine Stratocumulus Program on San Nicolas Island, Colorado State University (CSU) and the British Meteorological Office (BMO) operated separate instrument packages on the NASA tethered balloon. The CSU package contained instrumentation for the measurement of temperature, pressure, humidity, cloud droplet concentration, and long and short wave radiation. Eight research flights, performed between July 7 and July 14, are summarized. An analysis priority to the July 7, 8 and 11 flights was assigned for the purposes of comparing the CSU and BMO data. Results are presented. In addition, CSU operated a laser ceilometer for the determination of cloud base, and a CLASS radiosonde site which launched 69 sondes. Data from all of the above systems are being analyzed
Mitigating the risk of Zika virus contamination of raw materials and cell lines in the manufacture of biologicals
Ensuring the virological safety of biologicals is challenging due to the risk of viral contamination of raw materials and cell
banks, and exposure during in-process handling to known and/or emerging viral pathogens. Viruses may contaminate raw
materials and biologicals intended for human or veterinary use and remain undetected until appropriate testing measures
are employed. The outbreak and expansive spread of the mosquito-borne flavivirus Zika virus (ZIKV) poses challenges to
screening human- and animal -derived products used in the manufacture of biologicals. Here, we report the results of an in
vitro study where detector cell lines were challenged with African and Asian lineages of ZIKV. We demonstrate that this
pathogen is robustly detectable by in vitro assay, thereby providing assurance of detection of ZIKV, and in turn underpinning
the robustness of in vitro virology assays in safety testing of biologicals
An upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of the black hole - microlens OGLE-1999-BUL-32
We present an upper limit on the 3--20 keV X-ray flux from the black hole -
microlens OGLE-1999-BUL-32, based on RXTE/PCA scans over the Galactic Center
region in 1999-2000. It is shown that the X-ray luminosity of the black hole
did not exceed L(3-20 keV)<3e33(d/1kpc)^2 ergs/s (where d is the distance to
the black hole). Near the maximum of the background star amplification by the
microlens (July 6, 1999), the upper limit on the X-ray flux corresponds to an
X-ray luminosity L(3-20 keV)<7e33(d/1kpc)^2 ergs/s.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy Letter
