Real Time Correlators in Hot (2+1)d QCD
We use dimensional reduction techniques to relate real time finite T
correlation functions in (2+1) dimensional QCD to bound state parameters in a
generalized 't Hooft model with an infinite number of heavy quark and adjoint
scalar fields. While static susceptibilities and correlation functions of the
DeTar type can be calculated using only the light (static) gluonic modes, the
dynamical correlators require the inclusion of the heavy modes. In particular
we demonstrate that the leading T perturbative result can be understood in
terms of the bound states of the 2d model and that consistency requires bound
state trajectories composed of both quarks and adjoint scalars. We also propose
a non-perturbative expression for the dynamical DeTar correlators at small

Postglacial Colonisation Patterns and the Role of Isolation and Expansion in Driving Diversification in a Passerine Bird
Pleistocene glacial cycles play a major role in diversification and speciation, although the relative importance of isolation and expansion in driving diversification remains debated. We analysed mitochondrial DNA sequence data from 15 great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) populations distributed over the vast Eurasian breeding range of the species, and revealed unexpected postglacial expansion patterns from two glacial refugia. There were 58 different haplotypes forming two major clades, A and B. Clade A dominated in Western Europe with declining frequencies towards Eastern Europe and the Middle East, but showed a surprising increase in frequency in Western and Central Asia. Clade B dominated in the Middle East, with declining frequencies towards north in Central and Eastern Europe and was absent from Western Europe and Central Asia. A parsimonious explanation for these patterns is independent postglacial expansions from two isolated refugia, and mismatch distribution analyses confirmed this suggestion. Gene flow analyses showed that clade A colonised both Europe and Asia from a refugium in Europe, and that clade B expanded much later and colonised parts of Europe from a refugium in the Middle East. Great reed warblers in the eastern parts of the range have slightly paler plumage than western birds (sometimes treated as separate subspecies; A. a. zarudnyi and A. a. arundinaceus, respectively) and our results suggest that the plumage diversification took place during the easterly expansion of clade A. This supports the postglacial expansion hypothesis proposing that postglacial expansions drive diversification in comparatively short time periods. However, there is no indication of any (strong) reproductive isolation between clades and our data show that the refugia populations became separated during the last glaciation. This is in line with the Pleistocene speciation hypothesis invoking that much longer periods of time in isolation are needed for speciation to occur
The pigmented life of a redhead.
As a redhead I have had a personal interest in red hair, freckles and sunburns since childhood. An observation of a formaldehyde-induced fluorescence in human epidermal melanocytes initiated my scientific interest in these cells. Prota and Nicolaus demonstrated that oxidation products of cysteinyldopas are the main components of pheomelanin. Our identification of 5-S-cysteinyldopa as the source of formaldehyde-induced fluorescence of normal and pathological melanocytes started a series of investigations into this amino acid, enzymatic and non-enzymatic oxidation of catecholic compounds and the metabolism of thiols. All melanocytes with functioning tyrosinase produce cysteinyldopas and the levels of 5-S-cysteinyldopa in serum and urine are related to the size and pigment forming activity of the melanocyte population. The determination of 5-S-cysteinyldopa in serum or urine is a sensitive diagnostic method in the detection of melanoma metastasis. Some non-specific formation of cysteinyldopa is present in the body, as demonstrated by 5-S-cysteinyldopa in individuals with tyrosinase-negative albinism
Jain States in a Matrix Theory of the Quantum Hall Effect
The U(N) Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory is proposed as an extension
of Susskind's noncommutative approach. The theory describes D0-branes,
nonrelativistic particles with matrix coordinates and gauge symmetry, that
realize a matrix generalization of the quantum Hall effect. Matrix ground
states obtained by suitable projections of higher Landau levels are found to be
in one-to-one correspondence with the expected Laughlin and Jain hierarchical
states. The Jain composite-fermion construction follows by gauge invariance via
the Gauss law constraint. In the limit of commuting, ``normal'' matrices the
theory reduces to eigenvalue coordinates that describe realistic electrons with
Calogero interaction. The Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory improves earlier
noncommutative approaches and could provide another effective theory of the

Existence of Monetary Steady States in a Matching Model: Indivisible Money
Existence of a monetary steady state is established for a random matching model with divisible goods, indivisible money, and take-it-or-leave-it offers by consumers. There is no restriction on individual money holdings. The background environment is that in papers by Shi and by Trejos and Wright. The monetary steady state shown to exist has nice properties: the value function, defined on money holdings, is increasing and strictly concave, and the measure over money holdings has full support.
Characterising Probabilistic Processes Logically
In this paper we work on (bi)simulation semantics of processes that exhibit
both nondeterministic and probabilistic behaviour. We propose a probabilistic
extension of the modal mu-calculus and show how to derive characteristic
formulae for various simulation-like preorders over finite-state processes
without divergence. In addition, we show that even without the fixpoint
operators this probabilistic mu-calculus can be used to characterise these
behavioural relations in the sense that two states are equivalent if and only
if they satisfy the same set of formulae.Comment: 18 page
Laughlin Wave Function and One-Dimensional Free Fermions
Making use of the well-known phase space reduction in the lowest Landau
level(LLL), we show that the Laughlin wave function for the
case can be obtained exactly as a coherent state representation of an one
dimensional wave function. The system consists of copies of
free fermions associated with each of the electrons, confined in a common
harmonic well potential. Interestingly, the condition for this exact
correspondence is found to incorporate Jain's parton picture. We argue that,
this correspondence between the free fermions and quantum Hall effect is due to
the mapping of the system under consideration, to the Gaussian unitary

Bose-Einstein condensates in strong electric fields -- effective gauge potentials and rotating states
Magnetically-trapped atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates are spin polarized.
Since the magnetic field is inhomogeneous, the atoms aquire Berry phases of the
Aharonov-Bohm type during adiabatic motion. In the presence of an eletric field
there is an additional Aharonov-Casher effect. Taking into account the
limitations on the strength of the electric fields due to the polarizability of
the atoms, we investigate the extent to which these effects can be used to

Ostrinia revisited: Evidence for sex linkage in European Corn Borer Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) pheromone reception
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The European Corn Borer, <it>Ostrinia nubilalis </it>(Hubner), is a keystone model for studies on the evolution of sex pheromone diversity and its role in establishing reproductive isolation. This species consists of two sympatric races, each utilizing opposite isomers of the same compound as their major pheromone component. Female production and male response are congruent in each race, and males from each strain exhibit phenotypic differences in peripheral physiology. Both strains possess co-localized pheromone-sensitive olfactory sensory neurons characterized by a larger amplitude action potential (spike) responding to the major pheromone component, and a smaller spike amplitude cell responding to the minor component, i.e. the opposite isomer. These differences in amplitude correspond to differences in dendritic diameter between the two neurons. Previous studies showed that behavioral response to the pheromone blend was sex-linked, but spike amplitude response to pheromone components matched autosomal, not sex-linked inheritance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As part of a larger study to finely map the loci responsible for pheromone communication in this species, we have reanalyzed peripheral physiology among parental, and first and second generation hybrids between the two pheromone strains using tungsten electrode electrophysiology. Our results reveal that differences in spike amplitude ratio between male pheromone-sensitive sensory neurons in <it>O. nubilalis </it>races are controlled, at least partially, by sex-linked genes that exhibit E-strain dominance.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We propose that peripheral olfactory response in <it>O. nubilalis </it>may be affected both by autosomal and sex-linked genes exhibiting a cross-locus dominance effect, and suggest that the genetic basis for pheromone reception and response in the species is more closely linked than previously thought.</p
