Sediment mining in alluvial channels: Physical effects and management perspectives
Based on a review of a number of documented case studies from various countries and a detailed analysis of sediment exploitation
from five rivers in Italy and Poland, we discuss alluvial river response to extensive sediment mining. A sediment deficit
caused by in-stream mining typically induces upstream- and downstream-progressing river incision, lateral channel instability
and bed armouring. The resultant incision alters the frequency of floodplain inundation along the river courses, lowers valleyfloor
water tables and frequently leads to destruction of bridges and channelization structures. Mining also results in the loss or
impoverishment of aquatic and riparian habitats. In the rivers of Italy and southern Poland studied, where mining coincided with
other human activities that reduce sediment delivery to the channels, deep river downcutting, changes in channel pattern and, in
one case, transformation from alluvial to bedrock boundary conditions were recorded over recent decades.
The type and magnitude of channel response to sediment mining depend mainly on the ratio between extraction and sediment
replenishment rates. The effects of mining will be especially severe and difficult to reverse: (i) where material is extracted at a
rate greatly exceeding the replenishment rate; (ii) in single-thread rivers, that are generally associated with relatively low rates
of catchment sediment supply; (iii) in channelized reaches; (iv) where rivers are underlain by a thin cover of alluvium over
bedrock; and (v) where mining coincides with other human activities that reduce upstream sediment delivery. With a large
number of detrimental effects of instream mining, the practice should be prohibited in most rivers except aggrading ones
Storage patterns of large woody debris in mountain watercourses of medium and large width
This study aims at determining whether the inverse relation between wood quantity per unit river area and channel width, recognised in streams of small and medium width, typifies also wide mountain rivers. This is done by comparing wood distribution for Finzbach and Kamienica Streams, 14 and 9 m in width on average, and the Czarny Dunajec River with mean width of 52 m. In both streams, the values of total wood storage were unrelated to channel width, whereas the increase in channel width was reflected in a pronounced decline in specific wood storage. In the wide Czarny Dunajec, a marked trend of increasing total wood storage with the increase in river width was observed. The width-related variation in total wood storage in the river was so high that it overcame the influence of increasing channel area on calculated values of specific wood storage, and this parameter also increased with increasing river width. The contrasting patterns of wood storage observed in the watercourses point to different mechanisms governing wood retention in the channels narrower and wider than the height of trees growing on their banks
Thermo-mechanical stress analysis of the power turbine of turbo-engine
Praca opisuje wpływ poszczególnych przypadków obciążenia na stan naprężeń powstający w turbinie silnika przepływowego. W pierwszym etapie pracy zdefiniowano model geometryczny wycinka tarczy turbiny z trzema łopatkami. This paper describes the influence of different load components on the stress state in the disc of the turbine engine. In the first part of the paper the geometrical model consisted of disc segment and three blades were created. Next the geometrical model was divided into finite elements. Moreover the loads, boundary conditions and also the contact (in fir-tree region of turbine) were defined. In an analysis the following kinds of loads were defined: the mechanical load concerned with rotation of the turbine and also the non-uniform thermal field. Mentioned loads were defined separately and also commonly in order to determine the influence of the load component on the final stress field in the turbine. Results of work showed that dominant load is the centrifugal force concerned with the turbine rotation. The stress resulting only from the rotation exceeds value of yield stress of the material. The thermal stress in the turbine has a small influence on the final stress state in the turbine working in operating conditions. The additional interesting phenomenon was observed. The thermal stress caused decrease at about 5% the main stress resulting from rotation of the disc. Finally the conclusions and directions for further research were defined
Variation of bed-material grain-size along a mountain river affected by channelization and gravel extraction
Longitudinal changes in the granulometry of bar sediments were investigated in an 18 km long reach of the Czarny Dunajec to determine the impact of human activity in the river on depositional conditions in its channel. In the upper part of the reach, gravel extraction carried out in the past decades has led to deep channel incision and considerable coarsening of the bed material. Coarse, well sorted bar gravels occur also in the narrow, regulated channel sections in the middle part of the reach. Remarkably fine bed material typifies a wide, natural channel section in the lower part of the reach, and this section seems to function as a sediment sink, reducing bed-material delivery to a downstream located dam reservoir
Reflection of the variability of hydromorphological conditions in a mountain river in the abundance and diversity of fish fauna
W ciągu ostatnich kilkudziesięciu lat koryto Czarnego Dunajca uległo
w wielu odcinkach znacznemu przekształceniu w wyniku jego regulacji i wcięcia
się rzeki. W rezultacie współczesna rzeka cechuje się, zwłaszcza w swym środkowym
biegu, dużym zróżnicowaniem morfologii oraz charakteru utrzymania koryta.
Dla 12 przekrojów jedno- do czteronurtowych dokonano hydromorfologicznej
oceny rzeki i ocenę tę skonfrontowano z liczbą gatunków i okazów ryb stwierdzonych
uregulowane przyporządkowano do klasy 4. Zwiększaniu się liczby koryt małej
wody towarzyszył wzrost zróżnicowania głębokości i prędkości wody oraz średniej
średnicy materiału dennego. W przekrojach jednonurtowych stwierdzono tylko
2 gatunki i średnio 13 okazów ryb, natomiast w przekrojach czteronurtowych
3–4 gatunki i średnio 82 okazy ryb.
Wskazuje to, iż uzyskanie poprawy ekologicznego
stanu rzeki, którego przejawem jest liczebność i zróżnicowanie ichtiofauny, będzie wymagało zwiększenia morfologicznego zróżnicowania jej koryta i poprawy hydromorfologicznej jakości rzeki.Over a few past decades, some sections of the fifth-order, mountain Czarny
Dunajec River, southern Poland, have been considerably modified by channelization
or channel incision induced by gravel extraction. As a result, the contemporary
river represents a variety of morphologies ranging from single-thread, incised
or regulated channel to unmanaged, multi-thread channel. For twelve crosssections
with 1 to 4 flow threads, hydromorphological river quality was assessed
by four surveyors from the fields of fluvial geomorphology, river engineering and
hydrobiology and compared with the abundance and diversity of fish fauna determined
by electrofishing. Moreover, the variation in depth, velocity and bed material
size was determined for each cross-section on the basis of measurements made
at 1 m intervals. Average values of hydromorphological quality for the surveyed
cross-sections ranged between 1.08 and 3.96, with the cross-sections with heavily
island-braided morphology classified as representing high status (reference) conditions
and those located in channelized river sections falling into Class 4. The increase
in the number of low-flow channels within a cross-section was associated
with increasing variation in depth, velocity and bed material size. Single-thread
cross-sections hosted only 2 fish species and 13 specimens caught on average,
whereas 3-4 species and 82 specimens on average were recorded in the crosssections
with four low-flow channels. The reduced abundance and diversity of fish
fauna characterised single-thread river sections located both upstream and downstream
of the multi-thread channel reach. Results from regression analysis indicated
the number of both fish species and specimens to increase linearly with increasing
number of low-flow channels and variation in depth within a crosssection
and exponentially with improving hydromorphological quality. This study
shows that the simplification of flow pattern and the resultant aggravation of hydromorphological
quality in some sections of the Czarny Dunajec, caused by human
disturbances, is manifested in the remarkable impoverishment of fish communities.
This indicates a need for increasing morphological complexity of the flow
pattern and improving hydromorphological quality of the river that would be reflected
in a restored high abundance and diversity of its fish fauna
