Bacteriophages – nanoparticles of wide application range

Bakteriofagi są wirusami infekującymi wybiórczo komórki bakteryjne. Zainfekowana bakteria może ulec lizie uwalniając wiriony potomne, wraz z którymi uwalniane są do środowiska fragmenty ściany komórkowej bakterii np. lipopolisacharydy (endotoksyny; pirogeny). Istotnym aspektem przygotowania preparatów bakteriofagowych jest standaryzacja procedur ich wytwarzania i przechowywania, między innymi spełnienie szeregu wymagań dotyczących apirogenności. Opracowanie przedstawia historię odkrycia bakteriofagów, potencjalne zastosowania terapeutyczne oraz metody oczyszczania preparatów.Bacteriophages are viruses that infect selectively bacterial cells. The infected bacterium may undergo bacteriolysis releasing descendant virions, along with which fragments of bacterium cell wall, e.g. lipopolysaccharides (endotoxins; pyrogens) are also released. The important aspect of preparing bacteriophage preparations is standardisation of production and storage procedures, i.a. satisfying number of requirements related to their apyrogenicity. This work presents history of bacteriophage discovery, their potential therapeutic applications and methods for purification of preparations
