Strengthening Pluralistic Agricultural Information Delivery Systems in India
The study on agricultural information flow has revealed that only 40 per cent farm households access information from one or the other source. The popular information sources among farmers have been reported to be fellow progressive farmers and input dealers, followed by mass media. The public extension system has been found to be accessed by only 5.7 per cent households. Only 4.8 per cent of the small farmers have access to public extension workers as compared to 12.4 per cent of large farmers. The sector-wise study on the type of information, sought has revealed that a majority of the farmers have sought information on seed (32-55%) in the cultivation sector; on health care (26-54 %) in animal husbandry; and on management and marketing (8-46 %) in fisheries. Regarding adoption of information by farmers, input dealers and other progressive farmers have depicted greater influence mainly due to easy and convenient access to these sources. Plentiful magnetic moments in oxygen deficient SrTiO3
Correlated band theory is employed to investigate the magnetic and electronic
properties of different arrangements of oxygen di- and tri-vacancy clusters in
SrTiO. Hole and electron doping of oxygen deficient SrTiO yields
various degrees of magnetization as a result of the interaction between
localized magnetic moments at the defected sites. Different kinds of Ti atomic
orbital hybridization are described as a function of the doping level and
defect geometry. We find that magnetism in SrTiO is sensitive to
the arrangement of neighbouring vacancy sites, charge carrier density, and
vacancy-vacancy interaction. Permanent magnetic moments in the absence of
vacancy doping electrons are observed. Our description of the charged clusters
of oxygen vacancies widens the previous descriptions of mono and
multi-vacancies and points out the importance of the controled formation at the
atomic level of defects for the realization of transition metal oxide based

Socio-economic Impact Assessment of Livelihood Security in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture on the Tsunami-hit Lands of Andaman
Indian subcontinent is highly vulnerable to major natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, floods, droughts, landslides and bushfires. Tsunami, which is a recent addition to this list, had occurred in the early morning of 26th December 2004, after a massive earthquake of 9.2 magnitude on the Richter scale in Andaman & Nicobar islands, resulting in the submergence of large area of farmland, and subsequent drying up of water bodies. It caused moisture stress for the standing crops, livestock and fisheries and affected the livelihood of the people to a large extent. In this context, the present study has been carried out to make the socio-economic impact assessment of livelihood security in agriculture, animal husbandry and aquaculture on the tsunami-hit lands of Andaman. Data have been collected from 150 sample respondents and the survey has been conducted for two periods, pre-tsunami and post-tsunami. The results have indicated that tsunami has ravaged the households, standing crops, farm inputs such as seed, feed and implements, livestock and poultry population, their sheds, fish ponds, etc., thereby affecting the basic livelihood security of the people in Andaman. The rehabilitation measures taken by the government and NGOs have improved their livelihoods by reviving agriculture considerably in the subsequent years and by creating employment opportunities in various farm and non-farm activities. Spatial price integration and price transmission among major fish markets in India
The domestic fish marketing system in India deserves to be developed into a strong network of efficiently functioning markets, as more than three-fourths of the country’s total fish production is channellised domestically. With the unleashing of a new global economic order, the efficiency of markets needs to be dealt with utmost importance. The degree of spatial market integration and price transmission between the major coastal markets in India have been reported using monthly retail price data on important marine fish species. It has been observed that degree of integration and rate of price transmission differ according to species. The highest integration has been observed in mackerel, probably because of its affordability to all income classes, resulting in a wide consumer base. Among various markets, a near full transmission of prices has been observed between Kerala and Tamil Nadu markets, except in the case of shrimp. Even though a major landing centre, the price movement in Maharashtra market has been found independent of other markets. The spatial market integration between major shrimp markets in the country has appeared to be the least, possibly because of its greater market share outside the country. The study has suggested to devise strategies to bring about greater integration between these markets so that both fishermen and the fish-consuming community in the country are benefitted.Marketing,
Poisson approximations for the Ising model
A -dimensional Ising model on a lattice torus is considered. As the size
of the lattice tends to infinity, a Poisson approximation is given for the
distribution of the number of copies in the lattice of any given local
configuration, provided the magnetic field tends to and the
pair potential remains fixed. Using the Stein-Chen method, a bound is given

Radiative Phase Transitions and Casmir Effect Instabilities
Molecular quantum electrodynamics leads to photon frequency shifts and thus
to changes in condensed matter free energies often called the Casimir effect.
Strong quantum electrodynamic coupling between radiation and molecular motions
can lead to an instability beyond which one or more photon oscillators undergo
a displacement phase transition. The phase boundary of the transition can be

Towards Verifying Nonlinear Integer Arithmetic
We eliminate a key roadblock to efficient verification of nonlinear integer
arithmetic using CDCL SAT solvers, by showing how to construct short resolution
proofs for many properties of the most widely used multiplier circuits. Such
short proofs were conjectured not to exist. More precisely, we give n^{O(1)}
size regular resolution proofs for arbitrary degree 2 identities on array,
diagonal, and Booth multipliers and quasipolynomial- n^{O(\log n)} size proofs

CLON: overlay networks and gossip protocols for cloud environments
Although epidemic or gossip-based multicast is a robust and scalable approach to reliable data dissemination, its inherent redundancy results in high resource consumption on both links and nodes. This problem is aggravated in settings that have costlier or resource constrained links as happens in Cloud Computing infrastructures composed by several interconnected data centers across the globe.
The goal of this work is therefore to improve the efficiency of gossip-based reliable multicast by reducing the load imposed on those constrained links. In detail, the proposed clon protocol combines an overlay that gives preference to local links and a dissemination strategy that takes into account locality. Extensive experimental evaluation using a very large number of simulated nodes shows that this results in a reduction of traffic in constrained links by an order of magnitude, while at the same time preserving the resilience properties that make gossip-based protocols so attractive.HP Labs Innovation Research Award, project DC2MS (IRA/CW118736
