Examining CP Symmetry in Strange Baryon Decays
Non-conservation of CP symmetry can manisfest itself in non-leptonic hyperon
decays as a difference in the decay parameter between the strange-baryon decay
and its charge conjugate. By comparing the decay distribution in the
helicity frame for the decay sequence , with that of decay, E756 at Fermilab did not
observe any CP-odd effect at the level. The status of a follow-up
experiment, HyperCP (FNAL E871), to search for CP violation in charged

A Domain Specific Approach to High Performance Heterogeneous Computing
Users of heterogeneous computing systems face two problems: firstly, in
understanding the trade-off relationships between the observable
characteristics of their applications, such as latency and quality of the
result, and secondly, how to exploit knowledge of these characteristics to
allocate work to distributed computing platforms efficiently. A domain specific
approach addresses both of these problems. By considering a subset of
operations or functions, models of the observable characteristics or domain
metrics may be formulated in advance, and populated at run-time for task
instances. These metric models can then be used to express the allocation of
work as a constrained integer program, which can be solved using heuristics,
machine learning or Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) frameworks. These
claims are illustrated using the example domain of derivatives pricing in
computational finance, with the domain metrics of workload latency or makespan
and pricing accuracy. For a large, varied workload of 128 Black-Scholes and
Heston model-based option pricing tasks, running upon a diverse array of 16
Multicore CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs platforms, predictions made by models of both
the makespan and accuracy are generally within 10% of the run-time performance.
When these models are used as inputs to machine learning and MILP-based
workload allocation approaches, a latency improvement of up to 24 and 270 times

Seeing Shapes in Clouds: On the Performance-Cost trade-off for Heterogeneous Infrastructure-as-a-Service
In the near future FPGAs will be available by the hour, however this new
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) usage mode presents both an opportunity and
a challenge: The opportunity is that programmers can potentially trade
resources for performance on a much larger scale, for much shorter periods of
time than before. The challenge is in finding and traversing the trade-off for
heterogeneous IaaS that guarantees increased resources result in the greatest
possible increased performance. Such a trade-off is Pareto optimal. The Pareto
optimal trade-off for clusters of heterogeneous resources can be found by
solving multiple, multi-objective optimisation problems, resulting in an
optimal allocation of tasks to the available platforms. Solving these
optimisation programs can be done using simple heuristic approaches or formal
Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) techniques. When pricing 128 financial
options using a Monte Carlo algorithm upon a heterogeneous cluster of Multicore
CPU, GPU and FPGA platforms, the MILP approach produces a trade-off that is up
to 110% faster than a heuristic approach, and over 50% cheaper. These results
suggest that high quality performance-resource trade-offs of heterogeneous IaaS

Efficient queue-balancing switch for FPGAs
This paper presents a novel FPGA-based switch design that achieves high algorithmic performance and an efficient FPGA implementation. Crossbar switches based on virtual output queues (VOQs) and variations have been rather popular for implementing switches on FPGAs, with applications to network-on-chip (NoC) routers and network switches. The efficiency of VOQs is well-documented on ASICs, though we show that their disadvantages can outweigh their advantages on FPGAs. Our proposed design uses an output-queued switch internally for simplifying scheduling, and a queue balancing technique to avoid queue fragmentation and reduce the need for memory-sharing VOQs. Our implementation approaches the scheduling performance of the state-of-the-art, while requiring considerably fewer FPGA resources

Dominant Role of PI3K p110α over p110β in Insulin and β-Adrenergic Receptor Signalling
Attribution of specific roles to the two ubiquitously expressed PI 3-kinase (PI3K) isoforms p110α and p110β in biological functions they have been implicated, such as in insulin signalling, has been challenging. While p110α has been demonstrated to be the principal isoform activated downstream of the insulin receptor, several studies have provided evidence for a role of p110β. Here we have used isoform-selective inhibitors to estimate the relative contribution of each of these isoforms in insulin signalling in adipocytes, which are a cell type with essential roles in regulation of metabolism at the systemic level. Consistent with previous genetic and pharmacological studies, we found that p110α is the principal isoform activated downstream of the insulin receptor under physiological conditions. p110α interaction with Ras enhanced the strength of p110α activation by insulin. However, this interaction did not account for the selectivity for p110α over p110β in insulin signalling. We also demonstrate that p110α is the principal isoform activated downstream of the β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR), another important signalling pathway in metabolic regulation, through a mechanism involving activation of the cAMP effector molecule EPAC1. This study offers further insights in the role of PI3K isoforms in the regulation of energy metabolism with implications for the therapeutic application of selective inhibitors of these isoforms
