Tests of dry mechanical forepumps for use in the ITER vacuum pumping system
This report is a description of the design and construction of FORTE (Forepumps Test Facility) which has been built in order to enable testing of the pumping speeds of prototypical mechanical forepumps connected in series, as proposed for the ITER forepump system. Three NORMETEX pumps (1300, 600, 60 m"3/h) and one METAL BELLOWS pump (6m"3/h) have been integrated into the test bench. Measurements of the pumping characteristics were performed, both with the single pumps and with trains of series connected pumps, using the gases N_2, H_2, D_2, He as well as ITER typical gas mixture.
