    Identification Of Environmental Variables For Use In Monitoring For The Evaluation Of The Rural Environment Protection Scheme

This was achieved primarily by reviewing a range of agri-environmental indicators and suggesting indicators that would be appropriate for monitoring the REPS. The study conducted a desk review to collate information on current best practice in monitoring for environmental quality. A Project Group (comprising representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], Department of Agriculture and Food [DAF], Teagasc, and the project supervisors) advised on the ongoing development of the project. There was a consultation process with national experts, and with a selection of stakeholder organisations with an interest in monitoring the environmental impact of the REPS.Environmental Protection Agenc

    XMM-Newton observation of the interacting galaxies NGC1512 and NGC1510

    The galaxy NGC1512 is interacting with the smaller galaxy NGC1510 and shows a peculiar morphology, characterised by two extended arms immersed in an HI disc whose size is about four times larger than the optical diameter of NGC1512. For the first time we performed a deep X-ray observation of the galaxies NGC1512 and NGC1510 with XMM-Newton to gain information on the population of X-ray sources and diffuse emission in a system of interacting galaxies. We identified and classified the sources detected in the XMM-Newton field of view by means of spectral analysis, hardness-ratios calculated with a Bayesian method, X-ray variability, and cross-correlations with catalogues in optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths. We also made use of archival Swift (X-ray) and Australia Telescope Compact Array (radio) data to better constrain the nature of the sources detected with XMM-Newton. We detected 106 sources in the energy range of 0.2-12 keV, out of which 15 are located within the D_25 regions of NGC1512 and NGC1510 and at least six sources coincide with the extended arms. We identified and classified six background objects and six foreground stars. We discussed the nature of a source within the D_25 ellipse of NGC1512, whose properties indicate a quasi-stellar object or an intermediate ultra-luminous X-ray source. Taking into account the contribution of low-mass X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei, the number of high-mass X-ray binaries detected within the D_25 region of NGC1512 is consistent with the star formation rate obtained in previous works based on radio, infrared optical, and UV wavelengths. We detected diffuse X-ray emission from the interior region of NGC1512 with a plasma temperature of kT=0.68(0.31-0.87) keV and a 0.3-10 keV X-ray luminosity of 1.3E38 erg/s, after correcting for unresolved discrete sources.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 20 pages.     Livestreaming music in the UK: quantitative analysis

    As part of a larger project on livestreaming, we created a survey to investigate how musicians’ working lives have been impacted by COVID-19, and whether livestreaming has helped them. We also sought to discover musician and audience attitudes towards livestreaming, as well as the role that they think it will play in the future. Using exploratory factor analysis, we were able to identify several theoretical latent constructs in the data, which we converted to principal components to use in three multiple linear regression analyses. These allowed us to single out several variables that predicted the number of livestreams performed by musicians, and also the number watched/paid for by livestream viewers. A central theme that arose was the importance of communication during livestreams, both between audience and performer, and among audience members. Concerns about the lack of interaction and shared emotional experience appear to hold people back from watching. Opinion is mixed over whether livestreaming will provide musicians with a viable, additional income stream, but people agree that it has a role in the future for reaching new audiences, and also that it should embrace new possibilities made possible by the format rather than aim to replicate the physical concert experience

    Livestreaming Music in the UK: Report for Musicians

    The aim of this research project is to share information on the practice of livestreaming concerts with musicians, with a view to enabling them to add livestreaming to their income ­generating activities. The COVID ­related lockdowns have propelled many musicians into the livestreaming arena and the practice of livestreaming concerts continues to evolve rapidly. This report can only provide a snapshot of the current situation, as technological innovation, potential changes in licensing, and the sharing of good practice will have an impact on how livestreaming is done in future. The report serves in part as a guide to the practical matters of livestreaming, such as monetisation methods, platforms and technical and licensing aspects, and in part as an overview of current livestreaming practices. It also aims to outline the role that livestreaming is playing during the COVID pandemic and its potential role in a post­-pandemic world.     Combined EISCAT radar and optical multispectral and tomographic observations of black aurora

    Black auroras are recognized as spatially well-defined regions within a uniform diffuse auroral background where the optical emission is significantly reduced. Black auroras typically appear post-magnetic midnight and during the substorm recovery phase, but not exclusively so. We report on the first combined multimonochromatic optical imaging, bistatic white-light TV recordings and incoherent scatter radar observations of black aurora by EISCAT of the phenomenon. From the relatively larger reduction in luminosity at 4278 Å than at 8446 Å we show that nonsheared black auroras are most probably not caused by downward directed electrical fields at low altitude. From the observations, we determine this by relating the height and intensity of the black aurora to precipitating particle energy within the surrounding background diffuse aurora. The observations are more consistent with an energy selective loss cone. Hence the mechanism causing black aurora is most probably active in the magnetosphere rather than close to Earth

    Outsourcing has become an increasingly popular option for many organisations. But they vary in terms of activities being outsourced, reasons for and benefits from outsourcing, and how the decision was made. This article presents an empirical research on fourteen companies. It found out, a) in most cases it was the ‘peripheral’ support activity being outsourced with cost reduction as the primary driver; b) outsourcing decision was being made early in the process without active involvement of the in-house provider; and c) there were problems in supplier selection and management. The research identified pre-outsourcing decision process and post-outsourcing management as the two key areas that gave cause for concern, and offered recommendations for improvement

    Gravitational perturbations of rotating black holes in Lorenz gauge

    Perturbations of Kerr spacetime are typically studied with the Teukolsky formalism, in which a pair of invariant components of the perturbed Weyl tensor are expressed in terms of separable modes that satisfy ordinary differential equations. However, for certain applications it is desirable to construct the full metric perturbation in the Lorenz gauge, in which the linearized Einstein field equations take a manifestly hyperbolic form. Here we obtain a set of Lorenz-gauge solutions to the vacuum field equations in terms of homogeneous solutions to the spin-2, spin-1 and spin-0 Teukolsky equations; and completion pieces that represent perturbations to the mass and angular momentum of the spacetime. The solutions are valid in vacuum Petrov type-D spacetimes that admit a conformal Killing-Yano tensor

    You can hide but you have to run: direct detection with vector mediators

    We study direct detection in simplified models of Dark Matter (DM) in which interactions with Standard Model (SM) fermions are mediated by a heavy vector boson. We consider fully general, gauge-invariant couplings between the SM, the mediator and both scalar and fermion DM. We account for the evolution of the couplings between the energy scale of the mediator mass and the nuclear energy scale. This running arises from virtual effects of SM particles and its inclusion is not optional. We compare bounds on the mediator mass from direct detection experiments with and without accounting for the running. In some cases the inclusion of these effects changes the bounds by several orders of magnitude, as a consequence of operator mixing which generates new interactions at low energy. We also highlight the importance of these effects when translating LHC limits on the mediator mass into bounds on the direct detection cross section. For an axial-vector mediator, the running can alter the derived bounds on the spin-dependent DM-nucleon cross section by a factor of two or more. Finally, we provide tools to facilitate the inclusion of these effects in future studies: general approximate expressions for the low energy couplings and a public code runDM to evolve the couplings between arbitrary energy scales
