Carotid Artery Aneurysm: A Case Study
A 60 year old male arrived at the emergency department after losing consciousness. CT showed he demonstrated a right hemispheric embolic stroke with a middle cerebral artery distribution. Upon further investigation, the patient was found to have a right common carotid artery aneurysm that extended about 1 cm from the carotid bifurcation into the internal carotid artery. The patient underwent carotid artery reconstruction with the use of his right great saphenous vein.

The centred travelling salesman at high temperature
A recently formulated statistical mechanics method is used to study the phase transition occurring in a generalisation of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) known as the centred TSP. The method shows that the problem has clear signs of a crossover, but is only able to access (unscaled) finite temperatures above the transition point. The solution of the problem using this method displays a curious duality
The dynamics of proving uncolourability of large random graphs I. Symmetric Colouring Heuristic
We study the dynamics of a backtracking procedure capable of proving
uncolourability of graphs, and calculate its average running time T for sparse
random graphs, as a function of the average degree c and the number of vertices
N. The analysis is carried out by mapping the history of the search process
onto an out-of-equilibrium (multi-dimensional) surface growth problem. The
growth exponent of the average running time is quantitatively predicted, in

Crowdsourcing and Cloudsourcing CCTV Surveillance
While the continuing proliferation of CCTV surveillance is a cause for concern, its impact on privacy has in the past been mitigated by certain natural limitations on the way CCTV systems operate in practice. In particular, the increased quantity of surveillance data has not been matched by a similar increase in our ability to process and evaluate it. This paper compares different models of technology enabled analysis of CCTV footage, with a focus on the emerging trend of crowdsourced CCTV analysis: in the world of crowdsourced surveillance, “Big Brother is us”
Using Games to Create Language Resources: Successes and Limitations of the Approach
Abstract One of the more novel approaches to collaboratively creating language resources in recent years is to use online games to collect and validate data. The most significant challenges collaborative systems face are how to train users with the necessary expertise and how to encourage participation on a scale required to produce high quality data comparable with data produced by “traditional ” experts. In this chapter we provide a brief overview of collaborative creation and the different approaches that have been used to create language resources, before analysing games used for this purpose. We discuss some key issues in using a gaming approach, including task design, player motivation and data quality, and compare the costs of each approach in terms of development, distribution and ongoing administration. In conclusion, we summarise the benefits and limitations of using a gaming approach to resource creation and suggest key considerations for evaluating its utility in different research scenarios

Designing and Building a Crew-Centric Mobile Scheduling and Planning Tool for Exploring Crew Autonomy Concepts Onboard the International Space Station
During 2015, as part of our ongoing research on crew autonomy, our team adapted and extended the plan viewing tool, Playbook, into a mobile tool for exploring crew autonomy onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This work enables crewmembers to intuitively re-plan and schedule on their own with limited input from mission control. Designed for ease of use, re-planning is composed of simple drag and drop interactions and learning the tool requires little to no training. Playbook was successfully uplinked onto ISS as a technology demonstration and completed its onboard ground and crew checkouts in August and September 2015, respectively. We will discuss and describe how Playbook was able to integrate with actual ISS operational plans and operational procedures without disrupting real mission operations. This work will also outline the design and technical constraints required to build a collaborative tool that allows multiple users to simultaneously self-schedule and synchronize during communication dropouts in the restricted networking and computing environment onboard ISS. Finally, we will explore the aspects of crew autonomy that this technology enables as well as discuss our next steps and possible extensions
