More than 1,180 fecal samples were collected from 253 juvenile and 384 adult Townsend\u27s ground squirrels (Spermophilus townsendii) at the Snae Snake River Birds of Prey Area near Boise, Idaho, from February to June 1992. Oocysts of 7 eimerians were observed. Five are new host records (Eimeria beecheyi, Eimeria bilamellata, Eimeria callospermophili, Eimeria lateralis, and Eimeria morainensis), 2 species are described here as new, and new structural information on E. morainensis is added. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria adaensis n. sp. are ovoidal, 19.6 x 22.7 (16-22 x 18-26) ÎŒm with sporocysts ellipsoidal 7.2 x 11.9 (6-10 x 9-15) ÎŒm. No micropyle or oocyst residuum, but polar bodies, Stieda bodies, and sporocyst residua are present. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria pseudospermophili n. sp. are ovoidal, 24.7 x 28.5 (21-27 x 25-32) ÎŒm with sporocysts ellipsoidal 8.8 x 14.2 (8-10 x 12-17) ÎŒm. Micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent, but polar bodies and Stieda bodies are present. Sporulated oocysts of E. morainensis are more variable in size and shape than originally described and contain 2 distinctly different residua not previously described. Temporal changes in the prevalence of eimerians of all 7 species combined in adult squirrels showed significant decline (r2 = 0.79, P \u3c 0.001). We hypothesize that this decline was due to drought during the period of squirrel activity. No significant temporal change in the prevalence of eimerians in juvenile squirrels was observed. The prevalence of E. callospermophili, E. adaensis, and all eimerians combined in adults was significantly greater than in juveniles. There was no significant difference in eimerian prevalence between male and female squirrels (P \u3c 0.05)

The X-ray eclipse of the dwarf nova HT CAS observed by the XMM-Newton satellite: spectral and timing analysis

A cataclysmic variable is a binary system consisting of a white dwarf that accretes material from a secondary object via the Roche-lobe mechanism. In the case of long enough observation, a detailed temporal analysis can be performed, allowing the physical properties of the binary system to be determined. We present an XMM-Newton observation of the dwarf nova HT Cas acquired to resolve the binary system eclipses and constrain the origin of the X-rays observed. We also compare our results with previous ROSAT and ASCA data. After the spectral analysis of the three EPIC camera signals, the observed X-ray light curve was studied with well known techniques and the eclipse contact points obtained. The X-ray spectrum can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung of temperature kT1=6.89±0.23kT_1=6.89 \pm 0.23 keV plus a black-body component (upper limit) with temperature kT2=30−6+8kT_2=30_{-6}^{+8} eV. Neglecting the black-body, the bolometric absorption corrected flux is FBol=(6.5±0.1)×10−12F^{\rm{Bol}}=(6.5\pm 0.1)\times10^{-12} erg s−1^{-1} cm−2^{-2}, which, for a distance of HT Cas of 131 pc, corresponds to a bolometric luminosity of (1.33±0.02)×1031(1.33\pm 0.02)\times10^{31} erg s−1^{-1}. The study of the eclipse in the EPIC light curve permits us to constrain the size and location of the X-ray emitting region, which turns out to be close to the white dwarf radius. We measure an X-ray eclipse somewhat smaller (but only at a level of ≃1.5σ\simeq 1.5 \sigma) than the corresponding optical one. If this is the case, we have possibly identified the signature of either high latitude emission or a layer of X-ray emitting material partially obscured by an accretion disk.Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics, 200

A tomographic study of the classical nova RR Pic

We present the results of spectrophotometric observations of the old nova RR Pic performed in two spectral ranges, one centered in the Ha line and other covering Hb and Hg spectral lines. From the Hb radial velocity study we found a primary radial semi-amplitude of K1 = 37(1) km/s and a systemic velocity of g = 1.8(2) km/s. With this new values a mass diagram is constructed, constraining the possible mass intervals for the system. The possible orbital inclination range was restricted using the fact that RR Pic presents shallow eclipses. A secondary mass range below the limit of a main sequence star filling its Roche lobe indicate an evolved companion. We also calculated the Ha, Hb, Hg, HeI 6678 and HeII 4686 Doppler tomograms. The most conspicuous differences are found between the HeI and HeII tomograms, the former has a ring shape, while the second is filled at low velocities, suggesting that the low velocity emission is not coming from the accretion disk. Radial emissivity profiles for these lines were also derived.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted to appear in PAS

Mass and Angular Momentum Transfer in the Massive Algol Binary RY Persei

We present an investigation of H-alpha emission line variations observed in the massive Algol binary, RY Per. We give new radial velocity data for the secondary based upon our optical spectra and for the primary based upon high dispersion UV spectra. We present revised orbital elements and an estimate of the primary's projected rotational velocity (which indicates that the primary is rotating 7 times faster than synchronous). We use a Doppler tomography algorithm to reconstruct the individual primary and secondary spectra in the region of H-alpha, and we subtract the latter from each of our observations to obtain profiles of the primary and its disk alone. Our H-alpha observations of RY Per show that the mass gaining primary is surrounded by a persistent but time variable accretion disk. The profile that is observed outside-of-eclipse has weak, double-peaked emission flanking a deep central absorption, and we find that these properties can be reproduced by a disk model that includes the absorption of photospheric light by the band of the disk seen in projection against the face of the star. We developed a new method to reconstruct the disk surface density distribution from the ensemble of H-alpha profiles observed around the orbit, and this method accounts for the effects of disk occultation by the stellar components, the obscuration of the primary by the disk, and flux contributions from optically thick disk elements. The resulting surface density distribution is elongated along the axis joining the stars, in the same way as seen in hydrodynamical simulations of gas flows that strike the mass gainer near trailing edge of the star. This type of gas stream configuration is optimal for the transfer of angular momentum, and we show that rapid rotation is found in other Algols that have passed through a similar stage.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, ApJ in press, 2004 June 20 issu

Total cost of the outbreak of fowl pest in the Netherlands during 2003 amounted to roughly € 297 million. During the years 2000-2004, the ceiling for the donation of the poultry sector to the so-called Animal Health Fund (Diergezondheidsfonds) was € 11,3 million. This report gives an analysis of possible future developments of the poultry sector. Following an optimistic and a pessimistic scenario, for the years 2005 - 2009 it describes the levels of value added of the sector and income on farm level. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Product Boards for Livestock, Meat and Eggs requested this study from LEI. They aimed to consider the results in their negotiations to establish the ceiling of the donation of the poultry sector to the Animal Health Fund for the next five years

Parallax and Distance Estimates for Fourteen Cataclysmic Variable Stars

I used the 2.4 m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below 1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A Bayesian method which combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and absolute magnitude constraints is developed and used to derive distance estimates and confidence intervals. The most precise distance derived here is for WZ Sge, for which I find 43.3 (+1.6, -1.5) pc. Six Luyten Half-Second stars with previous precise parallax measurements were re-measured to test the techniques, and good agreement is found.Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures. An XMM-Newton observation of the nova-like variable UX UMa: spatially and spectrally resolved two-component X-ray emission

In the optical and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, UX Ursae Majoris is a deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable. However, no soft X-ray eclipse was detected in ROSAT observations. We have obtained a 38 ksec XMM-Newton observation to further constrain the origin of the X-rays. The combination of spectral and timing information allows us to identify two components in the X-ray emission of the system. The soft component, dominant below photon energies of 2 keV, can be fitted with a multi-temperature plasma model and is uneclipsed. The hard component, dominant above 3 keV, can be fitted with a kT ~ 5 keV plasma model and appears to be deeply eclipsed. We suggest that the most likely source of the hard X-ray emission in UX UMa, and other systems in high mass transfer states, is the boundary layer.Comment: To appear in MNRAS Letter

Brane-world Cosmologies with non-local bulk effects

It is very common to ignore the non-local bulk effects in the study of brane-world cosmologies using the brane-world approach. However, we shall illustrate through the use of three different scenarios, that the non-local bulk-effect PΌΜ{\cal P}_{\mu\nu} does indeed have significant impact on both the initial and future behaviour of brane-world cosmologies.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, iopart.cls, submitted to CQ

Semen cryopreservation, utilisation and reproductive outcome in men treated for Hodgkin's disease

    Get PDF
Between 1978 and 1990, 122 men underwent semen analysis before starting sterilising chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease. Eighty-one (66%) had semen quality within the normal range, 25 were oligospermic (<20×106 sperm per ml) and five were azoospermic (no sperm in the ejaculate). Semen from 115 men was cryopreserved and after a median follow-up time of 10.1 years, 33 men have utilised stored semen (actuarial rate 27%) and nine partners have become pregnant resulting in 11 live births and one termination for foetal malformation. Actuarial 10 year rates of destruction of semen before death or utilisation and death before utilisation are 19% and 13% respectively. This retrospective cohort study demonstrates that approximately one-quarter of men utilising cryopreserved semen after treatment for Hodgkin's disease obtain a live birth. The high non-utilisation rate is intriguing and warrants further investigation
