Kroz prikaz zdravstvene njege nedonoščeta izrazito niske rodne mase predstavljen je rad medicinskih sestara, njihove ovlasti i dužnosti u zbrinjavanju najosjetljivijih pacijenata. As defined by the World Health Organization premature infant is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, or before the 259th day of pregnancy, with birth weight less than 2500 grams. The World Health Organization has set a survival limit at 22 weeks of gestation and 500 grams of weight. Despite the fact that the organs, especially the lungs of an immature newborn have not yet been developed, survivals are still happening. Organic systems, primarily respiratory, thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, central nervous system, and the eye are not fully developed so that the ectopic development of each of these individual systems are at high risk for developing certain health complications. Large role in determining the further development of small organism has rapid and effective resuscitation, and therefore it is important to know the rules and comply properly all steps of resuscitation of premature newborn. The incidence of preterm birth in Croatian maternity hospitals is no different than in most developed countries. In the Republic of Croatia in 2013 were born 1,921preterm infants, of which at KBC - Split 188, or 9.7% of the total number of premature infants.
The aim of this study was to show the role of nurses in caring for a extremely low birth weight premature baby, and the process of health care with such a child. Quality work of nurses greatly contributes to better treatment and faster recovery, because experienced and trained nurse who spend most of her time with the patient can recognize the signs of certain complications on time.
In the Republic of Croatia in 2012 were born 41803 child, and one of these newborns is a female infant born prematurely with extremely low birth weight, N.N. born in KBC - Split, with only 23 weeks of gestational age and birth weight of 630 grams. Immediately after birth N.N. was admitted to the Clinic for Neonatology, at the intensive care unit for premature infants, and there she spent the next 85 days. Work of nurses, their powers and duties in the care of the most vulnerable patients, is represented through a review of healthcare of premature newborn with an extremely low birth weight.
