Quaternion algebras with the same subfields
G. Prasad and A. Rapinchuk asked if two quaternion division F -algebras that
have the same subfields are necessarily isomorphic. The answer is known to be
"no" for some very large fields. We prove that the answer is "yes" if F is an
extension of a global field K so that F /K is unirational and has zero
unramified Brauer group. We also prove a similar result for Pfister forms and
give an application to tractable fields
Strong anisotropy in surface kinetic roughening: analysis and experiments
We report an experimental assessment of surface kinetic roughening properties
that are anisotropic in space. Working for two specific instances of silicon
surfaces irradiated by ion-beam sputtering under diverse conditions (with and
without concurrent metallic impurity codeposition), we verify the predictions
and consistency of a recently proposed scaling Ansatz for surface observables
like the two-dimensional (2D) height Power Spectral Density (PSD). In contrast
with other formulations, this Ansatz is naturally tailored to the study of
two-dimensional surfaces, and allows to readily explore the implications of
anisotropic scaling for other observables, such as real-space correlation
functions and PSD functions for 1D profiles of the surface. Our results confirm
that there are indeed actual experimental systems whose kinetic roughening is
strongly anisotropic, as consistently described by this scaling analysis. In
the light of our work, some types of experimental measurements are seen to be
more affected by issues like finite space resolution effects, etc. that may
hinder a clear-cut assessment of strongly anisotropic scaling in the present
and other practical contexts
Testing the proposed link between cosmic rays and cloud cover
A decrease in the globally averaged low level cloud cover, deduced from the
ISCCP infra red data, as the cosmic ray intensity decreased during the solar
cycle 22 was observed by two groups. The groups went on to hypothesise that the
decrease in ionization due to cosmic rays causes the decrease in cloud cover,
thereby explaining a large part of the presently observed global warming. We
have examined this hypothesis to look for evidence to corroborate it. None has
been found and so our conclusions are to doubt it. From the absence of
corroborative evidence, we estimate that less than 23%, at the 95% confidence
level, of the 11-year cycle change in the globally averaged cloud cover
observed in solar cycle 22 is due to the change in the rate of ionization from
the solar modulation of cosmic rays
Adoption of cleaner production practices by dairy farmers in southern Chile
Nahuelhual, L (reprint author), Univ Austral Chile, Inst Econ Agr, Casilla 567, Valdivia, ChileRising concerns about the environmental costs of dairy production have resulted in an increasing use of farm practices that diminish negative production externalities. Yet, little empirical evidence exists regarding the factors influencing the adoption of pollution-reducing strategies by dairy farmers. In this study, we estimate a logit probability model to explain first-stage adoption of capital-intensive cleaner production (CP) practices, using a sample of 100 medium and large-size dairy farms located in southern Chile. Voluntary approaches to pollution control in agriculture are relatively recent in Chile and diffusion has been slow and uneven among farmers. Only 43% of the farmers surveyed were using some CP practices at the time of the interview. The probability of adoption was found to be positively correlated with farmer's education and age, awareness of environmental regulations, the type of milk buyer, and the use of complementary CP management practices. Conversely, farm structure variables were not significant, which suggests that the adoption of CP practices could be responding to non-economic motivations

IL-17A produced by αβ T cells drives airway hyper-responsiveness in mice and enhances mouse and human airway smooth muscle contraction.
Emerging evidence suggests that the T helper 17 (T(H)17) subset of αβ T cells contributes to the development of allergic asthma. In this study, we found that mice lacking the αvβ8 integrin on dendritic cells did not generate T(H)17 cells in the lung and were protected from airway hyper-responsiveness in response to house dust mite and ovalbumin sensitization and challenge. Because loss of T(H)17 cells inhibited airway narrowing without any obvious effects on airway inflammation or epithelial morphology, we examined the direct effects of T(H)17 cytokines on mouse and human airway smooth muscle function. Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), but not IL-17F or IL-22, enhanced contractile force generation of airway smooth muscle through an IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA)-IL-17RC, nuclear factor κ light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)-ras homolog gene family, member A (RhoA)-Rho-associated coiled-coil containing protein kinase 2 (ROCK2) signaling cascade. Mice lacking integrin αvβ8 on dendritic cells showed impaired activation of this pathway after ovalbumin sensitization and challenge, and the diminished contraction of the tracheal rings in these mice was reversed by IL-17A. These data indicate that the IL-17A produced by T(H)17 cells contributes to allergen-induced airway hyper-responsiveness through direct effects on airway smooth muscle

The Cellular and Physiological Basis for Lung Repair and Regeneration: Past, Present, and Future.
The respiratory system, which includes the trachea, airways, and distal alveoli, is a complex multi-cellular organ that intimately links with the cardiovascular system to accomplish gas exchange. In this review and as members of the NIH/NHLBI-supported Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium, we discuss key aspects of lung repair and regeneration. We focus on the cellular compositions within functional niches, cell-cell signaling in homeostatic health, the responses to injury, and new methods to study lung repair and regeneration. We also provide future directions for an improved understanding of the cell biology of the respiratory system, as well as new therapeutic avenues
Atmospheric number size distributions of soot particles and estimation of emission factors
International audienceNumber fractions of externally mixed particles of four different sizes (30, 50, 80, and 150 nm in diameter) were measured using a Volatility Tandem DMA. The system was operated in a street canyon (Eisenbahnstrasse, EI) and at an urban background site (Institute for Tropospheric Research, IfT), both in the city of Leipzig, Germany as well as at a rural site (Melpitz (ME), a village near Leipzig). Intensive campaigns of 3?5 weeks each took place in summer 2003 as well as in winter 2003/2004. The data set thus obtained provides mean number fractions of externally mixed soot particles of atmospheric aerosols in differently polluted areas and different seasons (e.g. at 80 nm on working days, 60% (EI), 22% (IfT), and 6% (ME) in summer and 26% (IfT), and 13% (ME) in winter). Furthermore, a new method is used to calculate the size distribution of these externally mixed soot particles from parallel number size distribution measurements. A decrease of the externally mixed soot fraction with decreasing urbanity and a diurnal variation linked to the daily traffic changes demonstrate, that the traffic emissions have a significant impact on the soot fraction in urban areas. This influence becomes less in rural areas, due to atmospheric mixing and transformation processes. For estimating the source strength of soot particles emitted by vehicles (veh), soot particle emission factors were calculated using the Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM). The emission factor for an average vehicle was found to be (1.5±0.4)·1014 #/(km·veh). The separation of the emission factor into passenger cars ((5.8±2)·1013 #/(km·veh)) and trucks ((2.5±0.9)·1015 #/(km·veh)) yielded in a 40-times higher emission factor for trucks compared to passenger cars
Factorization Breaking in Dijet Photoproduction with a Leading Neutron
The production of dijets with a leading neutron in ep-interactions at HERA is
calculated in leading order and next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD using
a pion-exchange model. Differential cross sections for deep-inelastic
scattering (DIS) and photoproduction are presented as a function of several
kinematic variables. By comparing the theoretical predictions for DIS dijets to
recent H1 data, the pion flux factor together with the parton distribution
functions of the pion is determined. The dijet cross sections in
photoproduction show factorization breaking if compared to the H1
photoproduction data. The suppression factor is S = 0.48 (0.64) for resolved

Two-dimensional atom trapping in field-induced adiabatic potentials
We show how to create a novel two-dimensional trap for ultracold atoms from a conventional magnetic trap. We achieve this by utilizing rf-induced adiabatic potentials to enhance the trapping potential in one direction. We demonstrate the loading process and discuss the experimental conditions under which it might be possible to prepare a 2D Bose condensate. A scheme for the preparation of coherent matterwave bubbles is also discussed
Consumption of cocoa flavanols results in acute improvements in mood and cognitive performance during sustained mental effort
Cocoa flavanols (CF) positively influence physiological processes in ways that suggest their consumption may improve aspects of cognitive function. This study investigated the acute cognitive and subjective effects of CF consumption during sustained mental demand. In this randomized, controlled, double-blinded, balanced, three period crossover trial 30 healthy adults consumed drinks containing 520 mg, 994 mg CF and a matched control, with a three-day washout between drinks. Assessments included the state anxiety inventory and repeated 10-min cycles of a Cognitive Demand Battery comprising of two serial subtraction tasks (Serial Threes and Serial Sevens), a Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP) task and a mental fatigue scale, over the course of 1 h. Consumption of both 520 mg and 994 mg CF significantly improved Serial Threes performance. The 994 mg CF beverage significantly speeded RVIP responses but also resulted in more errors during Serial Sevens. Increases in self-reported mental fatigue were significantly attenuated by the consumption of the 520 mg CF beverage only. This is the first report of acute cognitive improvements following CF consumption in healthy adults. While the mechanisms underlying the effects are unknown they may be related to known effects of CF on endothelial function and blood flow
