Extended shells around B[e] stars - implications for B[e] star evolution
Aims. The position of B[e] stars in the upper left part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram creates a quandary. Are these stars young stars evolving onto the main sequence or old stars that are evolving off of it? Spectral characteristics suggest that B[e] stars can be
placed into five subclasses and are not a homogeneous set. Such sub-classification is believed to coincide with varying origins and different evolutions. However, the evolutionary connection of B[e] stars – and notably sgB[e] – to other stars is unclear, particularly to evolved massive stars. We attempt to provide insight into the evolutionary past of B[e] stars.
Methods. We performed an Hα narrow-band CCD imaging survey of B[e] stars, in the northern hemisphere. Prior to the current work, no emission-line survey of B[e] stars had yet been made, while only two B[e] stars appeared to have a shell nebula as seen in the Digital Sky Survey. Of nebulae around B[e] stars, only the ring nebula around MWC137 has been previously observed extensively.
Results. In this presentation we report the findings from our narrow-band optical imaging survey of the environments of 25 B[e] stars. Of the objects surveyed, 7 show bipolar or uni- polar structures up to 15' across; 5 show faint, large, or filamentary shells; and 2 are compact planetary nebula-type systems. The most spectacular system observed is a large bipolar structure associated with MWC314.
Conclusions. The possible links between B[e] stars and other evolved stars, implied by our observations, are investigated
HD 85567: A Herbig B[e] star or an interacting B[e] binary
Context. HD 85567 is an enigmatic object exhibiting the B[e] phenomenon, i.e.
an infrared excess and forbidden emission lines in the optical. The object's
evolutionary status is uncertain and there are conflicting claims that it is
either a young stellar object or an evolved, interacting binary.
Aims. To elucidate the reason for the B[e] behaviour of HD 85567, we have
observed it with the VLTI and AMBER.
Methods. Our observations were conducted in the K-band with moderate spectral
resolution (R~1500, i.e. 200 km/s). The spectrum of HD 85567 exhibits Br gamma
and CO overtone bandhead emission. The interferometric data obtained consist of
spectrally dispersed visibilities, closure phases and differential phases
across these spectral features and the K-band continuum.
Results. The closure phase observations do not reveal evidence of asymmetry.
The apparent size of HD 85567 in the K-band was determined by fitting the
visibilities with a ring model. The best fitting radius, 0.8 +/- 0.3 AU, is
relatively small making HD 85567 undersized in comparison to the
size-luminosity relationship based on YSOs of low and intermediate luminosity.
This has previously been found to be the case for luminous YSOs, and it has
been proposed that this is due to the presence of an optically thick gaseous
disc. We demonstrate that the differential phase observations over the CO
bandhead emission are indeed consistent with the presence of a compact (~1 AU)
gaseous disc interior to the dust sublimation radius.
Conclusions. The observations reveal no sign of binarity. However, the data
do indicate the presence of a gaseous disc interior to the dust sublimation
radius. We conclude that the data are consistent with the hypothesis that HD
85567 is a YSO with an optically thick gaseous disc within a larger dust disc
that is being photo-evaporated from the outer edge.Comment: Accepted for publication in A &
Disk winds of B[e] supergiants
The class of B[e] supergiants is characterized by a two-component stellar
wind consisting of a normal hot star wind in the polar zone and a slow and
dense disk-like wind in the equatorial region. The properties of the disk wind
are discussed using satellite UV spectra of stars seen edge-on, i.e. through
the equatorial disk. These observations show that the disk winds are extremely
slow, 50-90 km/s, i.e. a factor of about 10 slower than expected from the
spectral types. Optical emission lines provide a further means to study the
disk wind. This is discussed for line profiles of forbidden lines formed in the

Educational and economic determinants of food intake in Portuguese adults: a cross-sectional survey
BACKGROUND: Understanding the influences of educational and economic variables on food consumption may be useful to explain food behaviour and nutrition policymaking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of educational and economic factors in determining food pattern in Portuguese adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study in a representative sample of Portuguese adults (20977 women and 18663 men). Participants were distributed in four categories according to years of education (≤4, 5–9, 10–12, and >12) and income (≤314 euros, 315–547 euros, 548–815 euros, and >815 euros). Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate the magnitude of the association between food groups and education/income, adjusting for confounders. RESULTS: In both genders, the odds favouring milk, vegetable soup, vegetables, fruit, and fish consumption, increased significantly with education, for those having >12 years of education compared to those with ≤4 years; the odds favouring wine, and spirits consumption decreased significantly with education, for those having >12 years of education compared to those with ≤4 years. In males, the odds favouring starchy foods and meat consumption decreased significantly with income, while for milk, the odds increased with higher income (those having >815 euros compared to those with ≤314 euros). CONCLUSIONS: The low and high income groups are or tend to be similar in regard to several food groups consumption, and access to education/information appears to be the key element to a better food pattern as indicated by higher frequency of milk, vegetable soup, vegetables, fruit, and fish consumption
Black holes with hair
I review some recent results on black holes with hair. I focus on the magnetically charged black holes in spontaneously broken Yang-Mills-Higgs theories and on the related self-gravitating magnetic monopoles. Some implications for black hole thermodynamics are discussed
