Mid-IR continuous-wave fiber-laser-pumped optical parametric oscillators
We review recent developments in continuous-wave mid-infrared optical parametric oscillators pumped by fiber lasers. Such devices are potentially valuable spectroscopic sources providing high output powers and rapid, wide-range tuning in the mid-infrared molecular fingerprint region
Spectropolarimetry of the Luminous Narrow-Line Seyfert Galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS 13224-3809
We observed the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS
13324-3809 with a new spectropolarimeter on the RC spectrograph at the CTIO 4m
telescope. Previously it had been suggested that IRAS 20181-2244 was a Type 2
QSO and thus might contain an obscured broad-line region which could be
detected by the presence of broad Balmer lines in the polarized flux. We found
the object to be polarized at about 2%, and constant with wavelength, (unlike
most narrow-line Seyfert 1s), but with no evidence of broad Balmer lines in
polarized flux. The spectropolarimetry indicates that the scattering material
is inside the BLR. IRAS 13224-3809, notable for its high variability in X-ray
and UV wavelengths, has a low polarization consistent with a Galactic

The Ultraluminous X-ray Sources near the Center of M82
We report the identification of a recurrent ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX),
a highly absorbed X-ray source (possibly a background AGN), and a young
supernova remnant near the center of the starburst galaxy M82. From a series of
Chandra observations taken from 1999 to 2005, we found that the transient ULX
first appeared in 1999 October. The source turned off in 2000 January, but
later reappeared and has been active since then. The X-ray luminosity of this
source varies from below the detection level (~2.5e38 erg/s) to its active
state in between ~7e39 erg/s and 1.3e40 erg/s (in the 0.5-10 keV energy band)
and shows unusual spectral changes. The X-ray spectra of some Chandra
observations are best fitted with an absorbed power-law model with photon index
ranging from 1.3 to 1.7. These spectra are similar to those of Galactic black
hole binary candidates seen in the low/hard state except that a very hard
spectrum was seen in one of the observations. By comparing with near infrared
images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, the ULX is found to be located
within a young star cluster. Radio imaging indicates that it is associated with
a H II region. We suggest that the ULX is likely to be a > 100 solar mass
intermediate-mass black hole in the low/hard state. In addition to the
transient ULX, we also found a highly absorbed hard X-ray source which is
likely to be an AGN and an ultraluminous X-ray emitting young supernova remnant
which may be related to a 100-year old gamma-ray burst event, within 2 arcsec

Continuous monitoring of mining induced strain in a road pavement using fiber Bragg grating sensors
Abstrakt
Få samhällsproblem har under de senaste åren mött så allmän uppmärksamhet som ungdomsbrottsligheten. Den polisanmälda ungdomsbrottsligheten har i stort sett följt brottslighetens utvecklingskurva avseende antal begångna brott, denna kurva visar en tydlig ökning sedan efterkrigstiden.
Detta är en komparativ uppsats som är inriktad på ungdomsbrottsligheten i två av Malmö stadsdelar där vi undersöker antalet polisanmälda ungdomar till socialtjänsten mellan åren 2007-2009. Vi har studerat vilka brott ungdomarna var anmälda, analyserat brottstrender och i den mån det var möjligt granskat hur könsfördelningen har sett ut. Vi har undersökt vilka insatser som tillämpas från socialtjänstens håll för att motverka ungdomsbrottslighet samt förhindra fortsatt brottslighet hos redan polisanmälda ungdomar samt granska hur socialsekreterare vid våra undersökningsverksamheter upplever och uppfattar ungdomsbrottsligheten. Våra resultat har delvis ställts i relation till hur ungdomsbrottsligheten enligt tidigare forskning och redan befintlig statistik ser ut i Sverige.
Vi har i uppsatsen använt oss av kvalitativ och kvantitativ datainsamlingsmetod samt ställt analysavsnitt och diskussionsavsnitt i relation till tidigare forskning och den av Travis Hirschis konstruerade teorin om sociala band.
Studiens resultat visar bland annat att antalet polisanmälningar till socialtjänsterna har ökat, att killar begår fler brott än tjejer, att brottstyperna skiljer sig åt beroende på kön samt att ett mindre antal ungdomar ansvarar för en stor del av socialtjänsternas inkomna polisanmälningar
The Radio Quiescence of Active Galaxies with High Accretion Rates
We present 6 cm Very Large Array observations of the Greene & Ho (2004)
sample of 19 low-mass active galaxies with high accretion rates. This is one of
the only studies of a uniform sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies
with such high sensitivity and resolution. Although we detect only one source,
the entire sample is very radio-quiet down to strong limits. GH10 was found to
have a radio power of 8.5 x 10^21 W/Hz, and a ratio R = f(6 cm)/f(4400 A) of
2.8. The 3 sigma upper limits for the remaining nondetections correspond to
radio powers from 3 x 10^20 to 8 x 10^21 W/Hz and 0.47 < R <9.9. Stacking all
nondetections yields an even stronger upper limit of R < 0.27. An assessment of
existing observations in the literature confirms our finding that NLS1s are
consistently radio-quiet, with a radio-loud fraction of 0%-6%, which is
significantly lower than the 10%-20% observed in the general quasar population.
By analogy with stellar-mass black holes, we argue that AGNs undergo a state
transition at L_bol/L_Edd~0.01. Below this value a radiatively inefficient
accretion flow effectively drives an outflow, which disappears when the flow
turns into an optically thick, geometrically thin disk, or a radiation

Multiwavelength Monitoring of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy Akn 564. I. ASCA Observations and the Variability of the X-ray Spectral Components
We present a 35 day ASCA observation of the NLS1 Akn 564, which was part of a
multiwavelength AGN Watch monitoring campaign. Akn 564 shows a photon index
varying across the range 2.45--2.72. The presence of the soft hump component
below 1 keV, previously detected in ASCA data, is confirmed. Time-resolved
spectroscopy with ~daily sampling reveals a distinction in the variability of
the soft hump and power-law components over a timescale of weeks, with the hump
varying by a factor of 6 across the 35-day observation compared to a factor 4
in the power-law. Flux variations in the power-law component are measured down
to a timescale of ~1000s and accompanying spectral variability suggests the
soft hump is not well-correlated with the power-law on such short timescales.
We detect Fe Ka and a blend of Fe Kb plus Ni Ka, indicating an origin in highly
ionized gas. Variability measurements constrain the bulk of the Fe Ka to
originate within a light week of the nucleus. The large EW of the emission
lines may be due to high metallicity in NLS1s, supporting some evolutionary

Self-Organized Criticality in Compact Plasmas
Compact plasmas, that exist near black-hole candidates and in gamma ray burst
sources, commonly exhibit self-organized non-linear behavior. A model that
simulates the non-linear behavior of compact radiative plasmas is constructed
directly from the observed luminosity and variability. The simulation shows
that such plasmas self organize, and that the degree of non-linearity as well
as the slope of the power density spectrum increase with compactness. The
simulation is based on a cellular automaton table that includes the properties
of the hot (relativistic) plasmas, and the magnitude of the energy
perturbations. The plasmas cool or heat up, depending on whether they release
more or less than the energy of a single perturbation. The energy release
depends on the plasmas densities and temperatures, and the perturbations
energy. Strong perturbations may cool the previously heated plasma through
shocks and/or pair creation.
New observations of some active galactic nuclei and gamma ray bursters are

The Host Galaxy and Central Engine of the Dwarf AGN POX 52
We present new multi-wavelength observations of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy
POX 52 in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxy and the active
nucleus, and to examine the mass of its black hole, previously estimated to be
~ 10^5 M_sun. Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC images show that the host galaxy
has a dwarf elliptical morphology (M_I = -18.4 mag, Sersic index n = 4.3) with
no detected disk component or spiral structure, confirming previous results
from ground-based imaging. X-ray observations from both Chandra and XMM show
strong (factor of 2) variability over timescales as short as 500 s, as well as
a dramatic decrease in the absorbing column density over a 9 month period. We
attribute this change to a partial covering absorber, with a 94% covering
fraction and N_H = 58^{+8.4}_{-9.2} * 10^21 cm^-2, that moved out of the line
of sight in between the XMM and Chandra observations. Combining these data with
observations from the VLA, Spitzer, and archival data from 2MASS and GALEX, we
examine the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the active nucleus. Its shape
is broadly similar to typical radio-quiet quasar SEDs, despite the very low
bolometric luminosity of L_bol = 1.3 * 10^43 ergs/s. Finally, we compare black
hole mass estimators including methods based on X-ray variability, and optical
scaling relations using the broad H-beta line width and AGN continuum
luminosity, finding a range of black hole mass from all methods to be M_bh =
(2.2-4.2) * 10^5 M_sun, with an Eddington ratio of L_bol/L_edd = 0.2-0.5.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
The Origin of the Intrinsic Scatter in the Relation Between Black Hole Mass and Bulge Luminosity for Nearby Active Galaxies
We investigate the origin of the intrinsic scatter in the correlation between
black hole mass (MBH) and bulge luminosity [L(bulge)] in a sample of 45
massive, local (z < 0.35) type~1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We derive MBH
from published optical spectra assuming a spherical broad-line region, and
L(bulge) from detailed two-dimensional decomposition of archival optical Hubble
Space Telescope images. AGNs follow the MBH-L(bulge) relation of inactive
galaxies, but the zero point is shifted by an average of \Delta log MBH ~ -0.3
dex. We show that the magnitude of the zero point offset, which is responsible
for the intrinsic scatter in the MBH-L(bulge) relation, is correlated with
several AGN and host galaxy properties, all of which are ultimately related to,
or directly impact, the BH mass accretion rate. At a given bulge luminosity,
sources with higher Eddington ratios have lower MBH. The zero point offset can
be explained by a change in the normalization of the virial product used to
estimate MBH, in conjunction with modest BH growth (~ 10%--40%) during the AGN
phase. Galaxy mergers and tidal interactions appear to play an important role
