Spousal Abuse: Vietnamese Children’s Reports of Parental Violence

    Get PDF
This exploratory study used mailed questionnaires completed by 131 Vietnamese students to examine domestic violence patterns in parents\u27 marital relationships. Research objectives included: (1) gaining an understanding of spousal abuse among Vietnamese couples; and (2) assessing which variables (demographic characteristics, decision-making power, and cultural adaptation, beliefs in traditional gender roles, and conflicts in the family) are correlated with spousal abuse. Findings suggest that although both parents used reasoning, mental abuse and physical abuse in their marital relationships, Vietnamese fathers were more likely to be physically abusive than mothers. Additional variables associated with family conflicts are also examined. Research implications and suggestions for further research are discussed

Correlation between Leptonic CP Violation and mu-tau Symmetry Breaking

Considering the μ\mu-τ\tau symmetry, we discuss a direct linkage between phases of flavor neutrino masses and leptonic CP violation by determining three eigenvectors associated with M=MνMν{\rm\bf M}=M^\dagger_\nu M_\nu for a complex flavor neutrino mass matrix MνM_\nu in the flavor basis. Since the Dirac CP violation is absent in the μ\mu-τ\tau symmetric limit, leptonic CP violation is sensitive to the μ\mu-τ\tau symmetry breaking, whose effect can be evaluated by perturbation. It is found that the Dirac phase (δ\delta) arises from the μ\mu-τ\tau symmetry breaking part of Meμ,eτ{\rm\bf M}_{e\mu,e\tau} and an additional phase (ρ\rho) is associated with the μ\mu-τ\tau symmetric part of Meμ,eτ{\rm\bf M}_{e\mu,e\tau}, where Mij{\rm\bf M}_{ij} stands for an ijij matrix element (i,ji,j=e,μ,τe,\mu,\tau). The phase ρ\rho is redundant and can be removed but leaves its effect in the Dirac CP violation characterized by sin(δ+ρ)\sin (\delta + \rho). The perturbative results suggest the exact formula of mixing parameters including that of δ\delta and ρ\rho, which turns out to be free from the effects of the redundant phases. As a result, it is generally shown that the maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing necessarily accompanies either sinθ13=0\sin\theta_{13}=0 or cos(δ+ρ)=0\cos(\delta+\rho)=0, the latter of which indicates maximal CP violation, where θ13\theta_{13} is the νe\nu_e-ντ\nu_\tau mixing angle.Comment: 16 pages, ReVTeX, references updated, typos corredcted, published version in Physical Reviews

Evaluation of the performance of gum guar varieties in north eastern Karnataka, India

The climatic situation in north eastern parts of Karnataka (except Bidar district) is almost similar to that of Rajastan. There is considerable area under rainfed situations and guar being a highly drought and temperature tolerant summer annual legume crop, there is hope for guar as an alternate and contingent crop during drought year in this region. With this objective effort were made to introduce, evaluate and to identify suitable gum guar varieties for North eastern parts of Karnataka. Ten gum guar varieties developed, released and cultivated in Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat state were evaluated in Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) located in Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgiri, Bellary and Raichur districts of Karnataka during Kharif 2013-14. At Bidar, the top entry with respect to yield was HG-884 (679.00 Kg/ Ha), Variety RGC-1031 (793.00 Kg/Ha) performed well with respect to seed yield in Gulbarga district. Genotypes GAUG-13 (614.00 Kg/Ha) and RGC-986 (501.00 Kg/Ha) recorded higher seed yield respectively, in Bellary and Yadgiri district. At Raichur GAUG-13, recorded highest seed yield of 1432.00 Kg/Ha. Over the locations genotype GAUG-13 recorded highest seed yield of 759.00 Kg/Ha followed by HG-884 (700.40 Kg/Ha) and RGC-986 (696.60 Kg/Ha). The varieties tested exhibited considerable significance differences among themselves at four locations, except at one location (Agricultural Research Station, Bheemarayanagudi, Yadgir district). Variety GAUG-13, recorded highest seed yield over three locations indicating its wider adaptability

Toxicity study and effect of the leaf extract of Acacia nilotica on some biochemical parameters of Wistar albino rats

Plants are the primary source of human medications and knowledge on its toxicity is vital; this work evaluates the acute toxicity and effect of Acacia nilotica leaf crude extract on the liver and kidney functions. The mean lethal dose (LD50) was determined by Lorke’s method, while the crude extract effect was evaluated by biochemical and histo-pathological assessments. The LD50 value was 3807.89 mg/kg for both oral and intra-peritoneal route of administrations. An elevated serum urea above the normal reference value in both control and treated group upon administration of 1000 mg/kg of the extract with mean values of 7.92 ± 1.19 and 7.86 ± 1.14 mmol/l respectively was observed. The results of ALAT, ASAT, ALP, T.protein, Albumin, and bilirubin in all cases were within the normal values. The kidney and liver function parameters at higher extract concentrations of 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day and relative organ weight were statistically significant (p< 0.05) and correlates with mild effect indicted on the histopathology of the organs. This study showed that administration of A. nilotica extract at 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day for an extended period could prompt hepatic and nephron toxicity

Population growthis linear tothe requrement of settlement area, while the area of the earth is limited. It was caused inappropriate use of the land. This study aims to identify, analyze, and describe dynamics and suitability of land for settlements in Padang. Determination of land suitablity for settlementis using Multi Criteria Evaluation (MCE) method. The indicators used in determining the suitability of land for settlement is the slope, the frequency of flooding, drainage, distrubusi gravel, rock distribution and effective depth. Weighting in the analysis of land suitability based on the opinions of experts from various fields related to as many as 15 experts. Analysis result for land suitability of settlements in the area show that: there were 12.543 ha (18%) very suitable for settlement; 52.390 ha (75,4%) were suitable for settletment; 4.279 ha (6,2%).were compatible with marginal for settlement; and 285 ha (0,8%) were unsuitable for settlement. The area is very suitable for residential areas is very limited, so expect optimal utilization
