bĂogo/hts: high throughput sequence handling for the Go language
biogo/hts provides a Go native implementation of the SAM specification (Group 2016) for SAM and BAM alignment formats (H. et al. 2012) commonly used for representation of high throughput genomic data, the BAI, CSI and tabix indexing formats, and the BGZF blocked compression format. The biogo/hts packages perform parallelized read and write operations and are able to cache recent reads according to user-specified caching methods. The parallelisation approach used by the biogo/hts package is influenced by the approach of the D implementation, sambamba by Tarazov et al. (T. A. et al. 2015). The biogo/hts APIs have been constructed to provide a consistent interface to sequence alignment data and the underlying compression system in order to aid ease of use and tool development.R. Room reflections and constancy in speech-like sounds: within-band effects
The experiment asks whether constancy in hearing precedes or follows grouping. Listeners heard speech-like
sounds comprising 8 auditory-filter shaped noise-bands that had temporal envelopes corresponding to those
arising in these filters when a speech message is played. The „context‟ words in the message were “next you‟ll
get _to click on”, into which a “sir” or “stir” test word was inserted. These test words were from an 11-step
continuum that was formed by amplitude modulation. Listeners identified the test words appropriately and quite
consistently, even though they had the „robotic‟ quality typical of this type of 8-band speech. The speech-like
effects of these sounds appears to be a consequence of auditory grouping. Constancy was assessed by comparing
the influence of room reflections on the test word across conditions where the context had either the same level
of reflections, or where it had a much lower level. Constancy effects were obtained with these 8-band sounds,
but only in „matched‟ conditions, where the room reflections were in the same bands in both the context and the
test word. This was not the case in a comparison „mismatched‟ condition, and here, no constancy effects were
found. It would appear that this type of constancy in hearing precedes the across-channel grouping whose
effects are so apparent in these sounds. This result is discussed in terms of the ubiquity of grouping across
different levels of representation
Infall, Outflow, Rotation, and Turbulent Motions of Dense Gas within NGC 1333 IRAS 4
Millimeter wavelength observations are presented of NGC 1333 IRAS 4, a group
of highly-embedded young stellar objects in Perseus, that reveal motions of
infall, outflow, rotation, and turbulence in the dense gas around its two
brightest continuum objects, 4A and 4B. These data have finest angular
resolution of approximately 2" (0.0034 pc) and finest velocity resolution of
0.13 km/s. Infall motions are seen from inverse P-Cygni profiles observed in
H2CO 3_12-2_11 toward both objects, but also in CS 3-2 and N2H+ 1-0 toward 4A,
providing the least ambiguous evidence for such motions toward low-mass
protostellar objects. Outflow motions are probed by bright line wings of H2CO
3_12-2_11 and CS 3-2 observed at positions offset from 4A and 4B, likely
tracing dense cavity walls. Rotational motions of dense gas are traced by a
systematic variation of the N2H+ line velocities, and such variations are found
around 4A but not around 4B. Turbulent motions appear reduced with scale, given
N2H+ line widths around both 4A and 4B that are narrower by factors of 2 or 3
than those seen from single-dish observations. Minimum observed line widths of
approximately 0.2 km/s provide a new low, upper bound to the velocity
dispersion of the parent core to IRAS 4, and demonstrate that turbulence within
regions of clustered star formation can be reduced significantly. A third
continuum object in the region, 4B', shows no detectable line emission in any

Newborn Hearing Screenings for Babies Born at Home: Report from an Initiative in Michigan
Objective: Babies born in an out-of-hospital setting (e.g., homebirth) often do not receive a universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of providing training and equipment for newborn hearing screening to midwives who attend homebirths.
Study Design: Midwives from around the state of Michigan were invited to participate in a two-part UNHS training. Hearing screening data from all midwives who attended homebirths (N=112) during the 2015 and 2016 calendar years were analyzed using a two-level multilevel model. Estimated odds of babies being screened were calculated based on midwife group.
Results: Having a midwife who hosted an AABR machine at her practice increased the likelihood of receiving a screening by 39.37 times. Having a midwife who had access to an AABR machine increased the likelihood of receiving a screening by 8.57 times. Having a midwife who received focused education about the importance of newborn hearing screening increased the likelihood of receiving a screening by 10.82 times.
Conclusion: Providing UNHS equipment to midwives significantly increases the likelihood that babies born at home will receive a hearing screening at birth. This is evidence for the continued outreach and inclusion of midwives in UNHS programs
