Prolongations of Geometric Overdetermined Systems
We show that a wide class of geometrically defined overdetermined semilinear
partial differential equations may be explicitly prolonged to obtain closed
systems. As a consequence, in the case of linear equations we extract sharp
bounds on the dimension of the solution space.Comment: 22 pages. In the second version, a comparison with the classical
theory of prolongations was added. In this third version more details were
added concerning our construction and especially the use of Kostant's
computation of Lie algebra cohomolog

On sl(2)-equivariant quantizations
By computing certain cohomology of Vect(M) of smooth vector fields we prove
that on 1-dimensional manifolds M there is no quantization map intertwining the
action of non-projective embeddings of the Lie algebra sl(2) into the Lie
algebra Vect(M). Contrariwise, for projective embeddings sl(2)-equivariant
quantization exists.Comment: 09 pages, LaTeX2e, no figures; to appear in Journal of Nonlinear

Gauged vortices in a background
We discuss the statistical mechanics of a gas of gauged vortices in the
canonical formalism. At critical self-coupling, and for low temperatures, it
has been argued that the configuration space for vortex dynamics in each
topological class of the abelian Higgs model approximately truncates to a
finite-dimensional moduli space with a Kaehler structure. For the case where
the vortices live on a 2-sphere, we explain how localisation formulas on the
moduli spaces can be used to compute explicitly the partition function of the
vortex gas interacting with a background potential. The coefficients of this
analytic function provide geometrical data about the Kaehler structures, the
simplest of which being their symplectic volume (computed previously by Manton
using an alternative argument). We use the partition function to deduce simple
results on the thermodynamics of the vortex system; in particular, the average
height on the sphere is computed and provides an interesting effective picture
of the ground state.Comment: Final version: 22 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figur
An evaluation of a nurse led unit: an action research study
This study is an exemplar of working in a participatory way with members of the public and health and social care practitioners as co-researchers. A Nurse Consultant Older People working in a nurse-led bed, intermediate care facility in a community hospital acted as joint project lead with an academic researcher. From the outset, members of the public were part of a team of 16 individuals who agreed an evaluation focus and were involved in all stages of the research process from design through to dissemination. An extensive evaluation reflecting all these stakeholders’ preferences was undertaken. Methods included research and audit including: patient and carer satisfaction questionnaire surveys, individual interviews with patients, carers and staff, staff surveys, graffiti board, suggestion box, first impressions questionnaire, patient tracking and a bed census. A key aim of the study has been capacity building of the research team members which has also been evaluated. In terms of impact, the co-researchers have developed research skills and knowledge, grown in confidence, developed in ways that have impacted elsewhere in their lives, developed posters, presented at conferences and gained a better understanding of the NHS. The evaluation itself has provided useful information on the processes and outcomes of intermediate care on the ward which was used to further improve the service
