When time stretches: waiting and in vitro fertilization in India

Waiting constitutes a central experience for In vitro Fertilization (IVF), within and beyond hospitals. In this article, I explore waiting related to IVF in India through three distinct prisms. Firstly, I analyse the waiting room of a private hospital in Delhi through the eyes of a researcher waiting for access. Secondly, I follow a patient waiting for medical interventions in the hospital and for child (ren) in her life. Finally, I tell the story of a researcher who was involved in the first IVF experiments in India and is still waiting for recognition. The uniting factor of these experiences is the anticipation of a brighter future—a long-awaited future.Attente et fécondation in vitro en Inde L’attente constitue une expérience centrale pour la fécondation in vitro (FIV), à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur des hôpitaux. Dans cet article, j’explore le lien entre la FIV en Inde et trois prismes distincts. Substantial Relations: Making Global Reproductive Medicine in Postcolonial India

Substantial Relations examines global reproductive medicine in India, focusing on in vitro fertilization. Since the 1970s, India has played a central but changable role in shaping global reproductive medicine: from a provider of raw material, to a producer of knowledge and technology, to a thriving medical market that attracts patients from all over the world. Substantial Relations traces this transnational historical trajectory from the archive to oral history. Drawing on ethnographic research in homes, hospitals, and laboratories, Sandra Bärnreuther provides deep insights into the intricacies of clinical life and everyday experience by depicting IVF users' quest for offspring and their fears of establishing unwanted ties, as well as the minute engagements of clinicians and laboratory staff with reproductive substances. Thinking through substances—metaphorically and materially—Sandra Bärnreuther provides a novel and rich analysis of the various relations that the burgeoning IVF sector in India has relied on and generated. L’hôpital en Asie du Sud

L’hôpital est en crise. L’hôpital est en recomposition. L’hôpital doit s’ouvrir sur le reste du système de soins, il doit resituer le patient au cœur de son modèle médical. Ces constats, entendus de Paris à New-Delhi, sont sympto­matiques d’une institution en profonde mutation depuis plusieurs décennies. Invitant au décentrement de ces enjeux, et rassemblant des chercheurs issus de différentes disciplines (anthropologie, géographie, psychologie, socio­logie), ce volume présente un panorama actualisé des transformations de l’hôpital en Asie du Sud, en prenant appui sur la pluralité des pratiques, des normes, des lieux de soins, si particulière à cette région. De la santé de la mère et de l’enfant à la psychiatrie, du secteur public au secteur privé, de l’Inde au Pakistan, ces contributions témoignent de l’émer­gence de nouvelles aspirations chez les patients comme chez le personnel soignant, d’une redéfinition des relations entre soignants et soignés, et du développement de normes et pratiques novatrices en milieu hospitalier. Par la multiplicité des terrains présentés, ces travaux ne sont-ils pas aussi l’occasion d’interroger plus largement les transformations du rôle de l’État, la persistance de tensions sociales, religieuses et inter-castes, et enfin la circulation de modèles de soins entre global et local
