(DIPF/Orig.)This research report informs about the approach and the results of an empirical research project on the transmission of social and cultural capital (sensu Bourdieu) between family generations (grandparents, parents, children). It is concerned with relationships between generations in different family cultures and how they constitute a generational system of shaping life trajectories, especially for succeeding generations. The investigation of what happens in the course of transmission and the negotiating und interchange processes about the nature and cultural significance of family traditions between generations can contribute to identifying, describing and understanding how family resources are used for the shaping of life courses and continuities/ discontinuities in family biographies. The research results open up insights into family-related modes of production and reproduction of both generational and social differences (and inequalities). Since the outcome of educational careers depends equally on formal education and trans-generational family culture it is argued that there is a growing necessity to take into account the informal educational impact of the family as a social network and an important channel for achieving access to knowledge and for realizing cultural and social participation. From primary school to secondary school. Transitional processes from the view point of students and parents

(DIPF/Orig.)The transition between fourth and fifih grade is connected by many considerations and decisions, influenced by expectations and criteria. Extensive interviews have pointed out the school related and informal educational ideas and experiences of children and their parents. The pedagogical profile of the school involved plays a major role. (DIPF/Orig.

FlexibleDecay: An automated calculator of scalar decay widths

We present FlexibleDecay, a tool to calculate decays of scalars in a broad class of BSM models. The tool aims for high precision particularly in the case of Higgs boson decays. In the case of scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs boson decays the known higher order SM QED, QCD and EW effects are taken into account where possible. The program works in a modified MSˉ\bar{\text{MS}} scheme that exhibits a decoupling property with respect to heavy BSM physics, with BSM parameters themselves treated in the MSˉ/DRˉ\bar{\text{MS}}/\bar{\text{DR}}-scheme allowing for an easy connection to high scale tests for, e.g., perturbativity and vacuum stability, and the many observable calculations readily available in MSˉ/DRˉ\bar{\text{MS}}/\bar{\text{DR}} programs. Pure BSM effects are taken into account at the leading order, including all one-loop contributions to loop-induced processes. The program is implemented as an extension to FlexibleSUSY, which determines the mass spectrum for arbitrary BSM models, and does not require any extra configuration from the user. We compare our predictions for Higgs decays in the SM, singlet extended SM, type II THDM, CMSSM and MRSSM, as well as for squark decays in the CMSSM against a selection of publicly available tools. The numerical differences between our and other programs are explained. The release of FlexibleDecay officially deprecates the old effective couplings routines in FlexibleSUSY.Comment: 44 pages, 3 figures, 11 tables; version published in CP

Biomolecular environment, quantification, and intracellular interaction of multifunctional magnetic SERS nanoprobes

Multifunctional composite nanoprobes consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles linked to silver and gold nanoparticles, Ag–Magnetite and Au–Magnetite, respectively, were introduced by endocytic uptake into cultured fibroblast cells. The cells containing the non-toxic nanoprobes were shown to be displaceable in an external magnetic field and can be manipulated in microfluidic channels. The distribution of the composite nanostructures that are contained in the endosomal system is discussed on the basis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) mapping, quantitative laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) micromapping, and cryo soft X-ray tomography (cryo soft-XRT). Cryo soft-XRT of intact, vitrified cells reveals that the composite nanoprobes form intra-endosomal aggregates. The nanoprobes provide SERS signals from the biomolecular composition of their surface in the endosomal environment. The SERS data indicate the high stability of the nanoprobes and of their plasmonic properties in the harsh environment of endosomes and lysosomes. The spectra point at the molecular composition at the surface of the Ag–Magnetite and Au–Magnetite nanostructures that is very similar to that of other composite structures, but different from the composition of pure silver and gold SERS nanoprobes used for intracellular investigations. As shown by the LA-ICP-MS data, the uptake efficiency of the magnetite composites is approximately two to three times higher than that of the pure gold and silver nanoparticles.Peer Reviewe

A 4-gene expression score associated with high levels of Wilms Tumor-1 (WT1) expression is an adverse prognostic factor in acute myeloid leukaemia

Wilms Tumor-1 (WT1) expression level is implicated in the prognosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). We hypothesized that a gene expression profile associated with WT1 expression levels might be a good surrogate marker. We identified high WT1 gene sets by comparing the gene expression profiles in the highest and lowest quartiles of WT1 expression in two large AML studies. Two high WT1 gene sets were found to be highly correlated in terms of the altered genes and expression profiles. We identified a 17-probe set signature of the high WT1 set as the optimal prognostic predictor in the first AML set, and showed that it was able to predict prognosis in the second AML series after adjustment for Europe
