Exploring the capability of mayenite (12CaO·7Al₂O₃) as hydrogen storage material
We utilized nanoporous mayenite (12CaO·7Al₂O₃), a cost-effective material, in the hydride state (H⁻) to explore the possibility of its use for hydrogen storage and transportation. Hydrogen desorption occurs by a simple reaction of mayenite with water, and the nanocage structure transforms into a calcium aluminate hydrate. This reaction enables easy desorption of H⁻ ions trapped in the structure, which could allow the use of this material in future portable applications. Additionally, this material is 100% recyclable because the cage structure can be recovered by heat treatment after hydrogen desorption. The presence of hydrogen molecules as H⁻ ions was confirmed by ¹H-NMR, gas chromatography, and neutron diffraction analyses. We confirmed the hydrogen state stability inside the mayenite cage by the first-principles calculations to understand the adsorption mechanism and storage capacity and to provide a key for the use of mayenite as a portable hydrogen storage material. Further, we succeeded in introducing H⁻ directly from OH⁻ by a simple process compared with previous studies that used long treatment durations and required careful control of humidity and oxygen gas to form O₂ species before the introduction of H⁻
Development of a Phosphoric Acid-Mediated Hyaluronic Acid Gel Sheet for Efficient Transdermal Delivery of Alendronate for Anti-Osteoporotic Therapy
For efficient transdermal delivery of alendronate (ALN) for anti-osteoporotic therapy, we developed a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel sheet that was prepared simply by enhancing HA noncovalent interactions using phosphoric acid and polyhydric alcohol (propanediol and glycerin). HA solution viscosity increased after addition of phosphoric acid, and the HA gel sheet formed after heated drying. The HA gel sheet could be converted to high viscosity state by addition of water. These results indicate that phosphoric acid enhances the noncovalent interactions of HA molecules. The HA gel sheet elicited no skin irritation over 7 days after a 24-h application. The permeation of ALN across rat and human skin was 109 and 7.17 µg/cm2, respectively, up to 24 h after application of the ALN-loaded HA gel sheet, which is sufficient for clinical treatment of osteoporosis. The bioavailability of ALN in rats was ~20% after application of the ALN-loaded HA gel sheet, and plasma calcium levels were effectively reduced 3 days after sheet application. Furthermore, in a rat osteoporosis model, the reduction in tibial bone density was suppressed by treatment with the ALN-loaded HA gel sheet. These results indicate that our phosphoric acid-mediated HA gel sheet is a promising transdermal formulation for efficient ALN delivery
Non-Robustness of Ang’s Risk Classification in Human Papillomavirus-Related Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Japanese Patients
Background: Validity of the risk classification by Ang for human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) remains to be studied in the patients treated by modalities other than chemoradiotherapy and in Japanese patients. Materials and Methods: Between 2010 and 2018, 122 patients with HPV-related OPSCC in stages III and IV by the TNM classification 7th edition (TNM-7) were treated curatively at a single institution in Japan. The median age was 62.7 years. Over 50% of the patients underwent surgery with or without adjuvant therapy. The influence of multiple factors on survival was analyzed. Results: The amount of smoking dichotomized at 10 pack-year, which was used in Ang’s risk classification, was not predictive of prognosis, and Ang’s risk classification was not significantly influential on prognosis in multivariate analysis. In the patients treated with definitive radiation therapy, Ang’s risk classification was not predictive of the prognosis in univariate analysis. The impact of smoking was significant only in the patients undergoing the definitive operation. Conclusions: Ang’s risk classification was not robust in predicting the prognosis of general Japanese HPV-related OPSCC patients.
