KINCAID MOUNDS - A Comparative Analysis of Non-invasive Exploration Techniques is a journal of my efforts to conduct non-invasive site investigations at the Kincaid Mounds Archaeological site in Southern Illinois. Through the utilization of tools such as; drones, photography, satellite imaging, light distance and ranging, and powerful analysis software, I will demonstrate a number of useful techniques which one can utilize to conduct independent site investigations without disturbing a sites landscape or structural integrity. Thus, illustrating differences between those techniques and pointing out their strengths and weaknesses in their various applications. During this journey, I will also venture into the world of three-dimensional rendering and printing. This research will illustrate how data can be obtained to create three-dimensional models of a site which can then be emailed between research colleagues or hobbyist around the world. Thus, demonstrating how such models can then be printed, via a 3-D printer, for a more hands-on investigation of site structures. The goal of this work is to bring to light a series of techniques that can be utilized by both the professional researcher and the archaeological hobbyist. By using these few non-invasive techniques, one can conduct exciting site explorations void of disturbing the historical or structural integrity of a site. And, with a bit of added determination and discipline one can further utilize such techniques to identify sites of unknown existence

Finding Ft. Smith and Ft. Star in Smithland, KY

Through the utilization of Light Detection and Ranging data, one can compile 3-dimensional models that can be used to spot anomalies of historical interest. These anomalies, if recognizable by the trained eye, can then be used to geo-reference historic maps to gain a better understanding of historic sites as well as to reveal possible areas of interests or unknown features. By using a 3-dimensional model compiled by LiDAR data, I was able to geo-reference a December 13th, 1861 map of the Civil War defenses for the town of Smithland, Kentucky. Through this process, I have been able to reveal more information about the actual site, Fort Star, as well as identify the location of a secondary site, Fort Smith, that was situated in the middle of the town

    ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE COMPUTING AGE

The utilization of computer technology applied to historical artifact investigation has opened a number of locked doors despite numerous concerns by critics. Through the use of computer technology, both scientist and historians now have the ability to perform in-depth investigations into aspects surrounding various questionable historical occurrences. However, some critics feel the application of computer technology could bring unwanted answers to some historically significant events. In this paper I will introduce my research by initially giving a brief background into the evolution of computer technology applied to historical investigation. Through the explanation of various technological tools of the trade, I will attempt to justify computing technology’s practicality through examples such as; finding lost history, science vs. religion, solving mystery, and historical preservation

Sensitivity analysis of the space shuttle to ascent wind profiles

    Get PDF
A parametric sensitivity analysis of the space shuttle ascent flight to the wind profile is presented. Engineering systems parameters are obtained by flight simulations using wind profile models and samples of detailed (Jimsphere) wind profile measurements. The wind models used are the synthetic vector wind model, with and without the design gust, and a model of the vector wind change with respect to time. From these comparison analyses an insight is gained on the contribution of winds to ascent subsystems flight parameters

Inverse Condemnation in Washington—Is the Lid Off Pandora\u27s Box?

Improvements and innovations designed to meet modern-day requirements of mass public transportation have spawned a number of legal problems, many of which the courts have attempted to resolve under an expanding concept of eminent domain. This ancient power, by which a sovereign may appropriate private property to public use, has not been a static doctrine. Rather it has served as an umbrella under which a multitude of varied and intricate theories, rules, and limitations have been developed by the judiciary to keep up with the increasing complexities of governmental functions and responsibilities. In Washington it may well be that modern transportation, by virtue of a single recent case, has generated a considerable extension of eminent domain under the title of inverse condemnation
