L'enceinte de Constantine (Lançon, Bouches-du-Rhône) et sa valeur militaire

The Constantine oppidum is located near Lançon-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône) and towers above the Berre pond. The author — an artillery officer — first draws a chronological perspective of the site, and then describes and analyzes the wall surrounding this dwelling place; he studies more particularly the military significance of the structures by comparing them to firstly, the restrainsts pertaining to the terrain, and secondly, the possibilities of the arms of the time. After privileging the sole military aspect of the oppida, which was the archeological trend of the last century, a new urban approach succeeded, which was as excessive in its demonstrations. This article sheds a new light on the surrounding wall, by taking into account its role of defense.L'oppidum de Constantine est situé près de Lançon-de- Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône) et domine l'étang de Berre. Après avoir replacé le site dans une perspective chronologique, l'auteur — officier d'artillerie — décrit et analyse l'enceinte qui ceinture cet habitat; il étudie de manière plus particulière la valeur militaire des structures en les mettant en parallèle d'une part avec les contraintes liées au terrain et d'autre part avec les possibilités de l'armement de l'époque. Au « tout militaire » caractéristique de l'archéologie des oppida du siècle dernier a succédé une approche « civile » tout aussi excessive dans ses développements. Trois aspects du patrimoine équestre militaire : des archives du XIXe, des traditions du XXe et une pratique actuelle

This paper proposes a typical approach of the French riding heritage. For several centuries – several thousands years? – horses have been part of two major functions in human activities : agriculture and war. The main part of this study deals with the second activity tackling this heritage under its military point of view. Thus it is considered under three points of view : a first one proceeding of the economical history, based on the archives about the requisitioning of horses at the end of the 19th century in a village in the Var county (south east part of France) ; a second one cultural and artistic illustrated for one part with the symbolic and the military traditions which give an important place to the horse, in the middle of the 20th century, and for another part on the regiments’ badges at the time when the engine is taking the horse role. A third and final one wants to show how till at the beginning of the 21st century the horse could be in the French army a relevant mean for the physical and psychological training of soldiers and not only one traditional activity for officers only
