    Types of Damages in Fission-Neutron Irradiated Cu and Cu Dilute Alloys at 200℃

    The damage structures in Cu and Cu based alloys neutron-irradiated at 200℃ were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Large dislocation loops of complex structure and small dot defects were formed in the specimens. The large dislocation loops were interstitial type. On the other hand, the small dot defects were vacancy type. They were stacking faulted tetrahedra. The damage structure in these metals evolves as follows. Interstitial atoms produced by neutron irradiation aggregate and grow to large complicated loops which will become finally dislocation lines by intersection of them with further irradiation, by absorbing interstitials subsequently produced. By the consumption of the interstitials to the sinks, vacancy concentration increases locally to be high enough to form vacancy defects

    Hepatitis C virus quasispecies in cancerous and noncancerous hepatic lesions: the core protein-encoding region.

    We have shown that highly proofreading DNA polymerase is required for the polymerase chain reaction in the genetic analysis of hepatitis C virus (HCV). To clarify the status of HCV quasispecies in hepatic tissue using proofreading DNA polymerase, we performed a genetic analysis of the HCV core protein-encoding region in cancerous and noncancerous lesions derived from 4 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. In contrast to the previously published data, we observed neither deletions nor stop codons in the analyzed region and no significant difference in the complexity of HCV quasispecies between cancerous and noncancerous lesions. This result suggests that the HCV core gene is never structurally defective in hepatic tissues, including cancerous lesions. However, in 3 of the patients, the consensus HCV species differed between cancerous and noncancerous lesions, suggesting that the predominant replicating HCV species differs between these 2 types of lesions. Moreover, during the course of the study, we obtained several interesting variants possessing a substitution at codon 9 of the core gene, whose substitution has been shown to induce the production of the F protein synthesized by a - 2/+1 ribosomal frameshift.</p

    Homopolyatomic Bismuth Ions, Part 2 Electronic Excitations in Homopolyatomic Bismuth Cations: Spectroscopic Measurements in Molten Salts and an ab initio CI-Singles Study

    Abstract: The electronic excitations of the low-valence bismuth cluster cations Bi 5 3 , Bi 8 2 , and Bi 9 5 have been studied with experimental and theoretical techniques. The UV-visible spectra of the bismuth ions were measured in acidic chloroaluminate melts (mixture of 1-methyl-3-benzyl imidazolium chloride and AlCl 3 ). The spectra of the Bi 5 3 and Bi 8 2 ions agree fairly well with previous reports, but also revealed additional low-energy absorptions. Ab initio methods were employed to assign the experimentally observed electronic transitions of these homopolyatomic bismuth cations. Structures were optimized at the RHF, MP2, and B3LYP levels of theory by using split-valence LANL2DZ basis sets that were augmented with one and two sets of pure d functions. The computed structures agree well with the results of neutron diffraction analyses of melts. Electronically excited states of the three clusters were treated by using the CI-Singles theory. The results of these calculations were used to explain the observed UV-visible spectra. The observed electronic excitations in the UV-visible range are all found to result from transitions involving the molecular orbitals formed by 6p-atomic-orbital overlap. This leads to the necessity of using basis sets that include d-type functions, which allow for an adequate description of the bonding that results from such p-orbital overlap. Spin-orbit coupling becomes increasingly important with increasing atomic number and its consideration is necessary when describing the electronic transitions in clusters of heavy atoms. The calculations show that singlet ± triplet transitions, which are made accessible by strong spin-orbit coupling, are responsible for some of the observed absorptions

    A unique B2 B cell subset in the intestine

    Over 80% of the body's activated B cells are located in mucosal sites, including the intestine. The intestine contains IgM+ B cells, but these cells have not been characterized phenotypically or in terms of their developmental origins. We describe a previously unidentified and unique subset of immunoglobulin M+ B cells that present with an AA4.1−CD21−CD23− major histocompatibility complex class IIbright surface phenotype and are characterized by a low frequency of somatic hypermutation and the potential ability to produce interleukin-12p70. This B cell subset resides within the normal mucosa of the large intestine and expands in response to inflammation. Some of these intestinal B cells originate from the AA4.1+ immature B2 cell pool in the steady state and are also recruited from the recirculating naive B cell pool in the context of intestinal inflammation. They develop in an antigen-independent and BAFF-dependent manner in the absence of T cell help. Expansion of these cells can be induced in the absence of the spleen and gut-associated lymphoid tissues. These results describe the existence of an alternative pathway of B cell maturation in the periphery that gives rise to a tissue-specific B cell subset

    Abstract In Japan, the introduction of large capacity of clean energy such as PV (photovoltaic power generation) is planned to reduce environmental burdens. The Japanese government has set the target of 53 GW of PV by 2030. However, large penetration of PV will cause several problems in power systems. One of these problems is that voltage values increase with the amount of PV penetration. Thus, we focus our attention on the upper voltage limit for a large penetration of PV in terms of voltage stability. In this paper, we consider a smart generator output and static capacitor control for the large penetration of PV. For the generator output control we propose to use the optimal power flow in terms of minimizing bus voltage deviations from the prescribed values. Simulations are run using the IEEJ WEST 10-machine O/V system model to confirm the validity of the proposed method

    Successful resection of liver metastasis detected by exacerbation of skin symptom in a patient with dermatomyositis accompanied by rectal cancer: a case report and literature review

    Abstract Background Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare syndrome that belongs to the group of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. The association between DM and malignancy is well recognized, and the severity of DM symptoms has been linked to the progression of metastatic disease. Case presentation We report the case of a 42-year-old man that was diagnosed with dermatomyositis (DM) and rectal cancer. Proctectomy was performed, and DM symptoms were resolved postoperatively. One year and 9\ua0months after the surgery, liver metastasis occurred accompanied by the exacerbation of DM symptom. Partial resection of the liver was performed, and postoperative course was uneventful. DM symptoms improved postoperatively, and no evidence of cancer recurrence or DM symptoms was observed 2\ua0years after the second surgery. To date, few reports have described recurring cases of DM accompanied by colorectal cancer in detail. We reviewed four similar cases that were reported poor prognoses with treatment resistance. However, our case report demonstrates good long-term results with resection of metastatic lesion. Conclusions It is important to check the exacerbation of DM symptoms, as this symptom sometimes preceded cancer relapse during the follow-up of our patient with DM and colorectal cancer

    Vaccination and Infection as Causative Factors in Japanese Patients With Rasmussen Syndrome: Molecular Mimicry and HLA Class I

    Rasmussen syndrome is an intractable epilepsy with a putative causal relation with cellular and humoral autoimmunity. Almost half of the patients have some preceding causative factors, with infections found in 38.2%, vaccinations in 5.9% and head trauma in 8.9% of Japanese patients. In a patient with seizure onset after influenza A infections, cross-reaction of the patient's lymphocytes with GluRε2 and influenza vaccine components was demonstrated by lymphocyte stimulation test. Database analyses revealed that influenza A virus hemagglutinin and GluRε2 molecules contain peptides with the patient's HLA class I binding motif (HLA − A*0201). The relative risks of HLA class I genotypes for Rasmussen syndrome are 6.1 (A*2402), 6.4 (A*0201), 6.3 (A*2601) and 11.4 (B*4601). The relative risks of HLA class I-A and B haplotypes are infinity (A*2601+B*5401), 21.1 (A*2402+B*1501), 13.3 (A*2402+B*4801) and 5.1 (A*2402+B*5201). Some alleles and haplotypes of HLA class I may be the risk factors in Japanese patients. Cross-reactivity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes may contribute to the processes leading from infection to the involvement of CNS
