Measurement of Jets and Jet Suppression in sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV Lead-Lead Collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

The first results of single jet observables in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Full jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with R= 0.2 and 0.4, using an event-by-event subtraction procedure to correct for the effects of the underlying event including elliptic flow. The geometrically-scaled ratio of jet yields in central and peripheral events,Rcp, indicates a clear suppression of jets with ET >100 GeV. The transverse and longitudinal distributions of jet fragments is also presented. We find little no substantial change to the fragmentation properties and no significant change in the level of suppression when moving to the larger jet definition.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, proceedings for Quark Matter 2011, Annecy, France, May 23-28, 201

Plotting the Differences Between Data and Expectation

This article proposes a way to improve the presentation of histograms where data are compared to expectation. Sometimes, it is difficult to judge by eye whether the difference between the bin content and the theoretical expectation (provided by either a fitting function or another histogram) is just due to statistical fluctuations. More importantly, there could be statistically significant deviations which are completely invisible in the plot. We propose to add a small inset at the bottom of the plot, in which the statistical significance of the deviation observed in each bin is shown. Even though the numerical routines which we developed have only illustration purposes, it comes out that they are based on formulae which could be used to perform statistical inference in a proper way. Forward production of beauty baryons in pp collisions at LHC

The production of charmed and beauty baryons in proton-proton collisions at high energies is analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model. We present some predictions for the experiments on the forward beauty baryon production in pp collisions at LHC energies. This analysis allows us to find useful information on the Regge trajectories of the heavy (b barb) mesons and the sea beauty quark distributions in the proton.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

Search for direct production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states with two leptons and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √s = 8TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Searches for the electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states characterized by the presence of two leptons (electrons and muons) and missing transverse momentum are performed using 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s√ = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. Limits are set on the masses of the lightest chargino, next-to-lightest neutralino and sleptons for different lightest-neutralino mass hypotheses in simplified models. Results are also interpreted in various scenarios of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

Constraining SUSY Dark Matter with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

In the event that R-Parity conserving supersymmetry (SUSY) is discovered at the LHC, a key issue which will need to be addressed will be the consistency of that signal with astrophysical and non-accelerator constraints on SUSY Dark Matter. This issue is studied for the SPS1a mSUGRA benchmark model by using measurements of end-points and thresholds in the invariant mass spectra of various combinations of leptons and jets in ATLAS to constrain the model parameters. These constraints are then used to assess the statistical accuracy with which quantities such as the Dark Matter relic density and direct detection cross-section can be measured. Systematic effects arising from the use of different mSUGRA RGE codes are also estimated. Results indicate that for SPS1a a statistical(systematic) precision on the relic abundance ~ 2.8% (3 %) can be obtained given 300 fb-1 of data.Comment: 11 pages, 10 encapsulated postscript figures. On the active site of elastase: Partial mapping by means of specific peptide substrates

    Get PDF
AbstractRNase-S peptide as well as some related octa- and hexapeptides were found to be highly, reactive substrates of porcine elastase (e.g. Ala4-Lys-Phe: Km = 4500 M−1, kcat = 32 sec−1, C = 1.4 × 105 M−1 sec−1). Comparison of the various peptides led to the conclusion that the active site of porcine elastase is composed of 6–7 subsites (c.f. [1]). Preliminary mapping shows that subsites S2, S′1 and S′2 have hydrophobic character. Occupation of subsite S4 by the substrate is important for efficient hydrolysis. Binding at this subsite was found to be stereospecific

On saturation of charged hadron production in pp collisions at LHC

First results on charged hadron transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions obtained by the CMS Collaboration at LHC were analyzed in z-scaling approach. The first LHC data confirm z-scaling. The saturation regime of the scaling function psi(z) observed in pp and antp-pp interactions at lower energy sqrt s = 19-1960 GeV is verified. The saturation of psi(z) for charged hadrons is found down to z=0.05 at the highest energy sqrt s = 2360 GeV reached till now at colliders. A microscopic scenario of hadron production is discussed in connection with search for new signatures of phase transitions in hadron matter. Constituent energy loss and its dependencies on the transverse momentum of charged hadrons and collision energy are estimated. The beam energy scan at LHC in the saturation region is suggested.Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages, 6 figure
